Durante el congreso de medicina en cancún una amiga y un servidor nos escapamos a las ruinas de chichen itzá y de paso visitamos un cenote; IK KIL.
Aquí una descripción del mismo:
Saliendo de Chichén Itzá en dirección a Cancún por la carretera 180 continuar 5 kilómetros y veremos el parque eco-arqueológico de Ik kil a la derecha de la carretera. También se llama "Cenote Azul Sagrado".
Es completamente redondo, mide unos 61 metros de diámetro y el nivel del agua se encuentra a unos 30 metros abajo de la superficie, la profundidad de sus aguas es de 43 metros. Las paredes laterales del cenote están cubiertas por vegetación de revestimiento. Finos chorros de agua caen continuamente dando un sonido extremadamente relajante. La profundidad de las aguas permite saltar sobre ellas desde cualquier posición. Existe una gran escalera de piedra por la que se baja hasta el nivel del agua, donde se puede permanecer cómodamente. Permanece abierto desde las 8 de la mañana hasta las 6 de la tarde. Posee un excelente buffet restaurante y bungalows para pasar la noche.

Attention: Mel Gibson. This is what real Yucatec Maya sounds like. If you listen closely you can hear a few Spanish words mixed in where there are no Mayan words. I had just given a massage to Paula, the older woman, but she did not speak enough Spanish for me to get some information from her that I needed. So I called in Sofia, my housekeper, to translate since she does have some Spanish. Sofia saw Gibson's film "Apocalipto" but had a difficult time understanding the Mayan spoken. Don't know if it was because Gibson somehow had his actors speak "old" Mayan or if it was because most of the actors had to learn Mayan and maybe had bad accents. ¿Quien sabe?

En México existen muchos Cenotes de diversos tipos;
la mayoria se localizan en la peninsula de Yucatán, pero es en Tamaulipas donde se localiza el cenote más profundo de todos, (no sólo en la nación, sino del mundo entero); "El Zacatón".
Se cree que tiene mas de 318 metros de profundidad. El robót submarino, llamado "Clementina", ( Deep Phreatic Thermal Explorer (DEPTHX)) de la NASA, explora y realiza estudios en sus profundidades.
La palabra Cenote viene del vocablo Maya tz'ono'ot o d'zonot, -que significa: "caverna subterránea con depósito y corriente de agua".
-Este término se ha generalizadopara designar a la mayoría de las manifestaciones kársticas en la Peninsula de Yucatán.
Segun la mitología Maya, los Cenotes son la entrada al Inframundo, al "Xibalbá"; el reino de los Bolontikú o nueve señores de la noche, coexistentes sagrados de los Oxlahuntikú o 13 deidades del supramundo;
unidad conceptual indivisible en la cosmovisión Maya.
El término Cenote denota cualquier espacio subterráneo con agua, con la única condición de que esté abierto al exterior en algún grado, es decir, incluye toda manifestación kárstica que alcance el nivel freático.
El número aproximado de cenotes en la península no se ha estimado dada la dinámica existente en su formación, pero el número estimado en el estado de Yucatán va de los 7 000 a los 8 000 cenotes; la cobertura de bosque ha hecho más difícil el cálculo para los estados de Campeche y Quintana Roo.
En la actualidad los cenotes aún constituyen la fuente primordial para el aprovisionamiento de agua de las poblaciones de la península; aun las pujantes ciudades de Mérida, Cancún o Playa del Carmen dependen de los mantos acuíferos para su desarrollo.
De igual modo, subsisten ciertas prácticas de la antigua veneración de los cenotes, pues los campesinos mayas suelen realizar rituales en estos espectaculares escenarios naturales.
Para los Mayas de Yucatán, los chacs o chaces, deidades de la lluvia, habitan en el fondo de los cenotes, y por ello son objeto de culto y veneración.
En algunas comunidades creen que los traviesos Aluxob o Aluxes, (espíritus o duendecillos de la selva, habitan en las cavernas y en los cenotes, y por lo tanto, es necesario procurarlos con ofrendas; de igual manera, está muy generalizada la creencia de que ahí viven ciertos seres míticos, como la serpiente gigante que guarda los mantos de la vital sustancia, esta idea, en apariencia fundada en la existencia de una singular serpiente que habita en aguas cavernosas, parece ser una reminiscencia de la antigua serpiente celeste sagrada (Ahau Cán) símbolo relacionado con la lluvia, y fértilidad terrestre, asociada a las corrientes de agua superficiales y que son conocidas como chicchán por los actuales grupos étnicos mayenses, Los Chortís.
Cenotes are unique features in Mexico Yucatan Peninsula landscape. Cenotes are kind of sinkholes ,underground caves and rivers with fresh clean water.
In Spanish are called Cenotes and in Yucatec-Mayan are called Dzonot [ts'ono'ot] .
