6/July/2008. This is by FAR the best game of tennis I've ever watched, and one of the best sports matches EVER. The significance of winning the most important Grand Slam wasn't all of it, as Federer was aiming to break Borg's record of 5 straight championships in the All England Club, as well as tying Renshaw's 6 straight championships (though those were easier to get back in the 1800's). Nadal in the other hand was aiming to win his first Grand Slam outside of Roland Garros, and start solidifying as the greatest thing in tennis right now.
First set: Nadal starts controlling Federer and breaks him early to hold on 6-4.
Second set: Federer breaks Nadal early and finds himself 4-2 on top, but Nadal fights back and breaks Federer twice to take the set 6-4.
Third set: All the pressure was now on Federer, who had never recovered from a two-set deficit in Wimbledon. At 5-4 in favor of Federer, the game was delayed more than an hour because of rain, and after returning, Federer won a tiebreaker to make it 7-6 in the third.
Fourth set: Nadal was starting to feel the pressure, and again, in a tiebreaker, Federer fought off after falling 5-2 to win 10-8, one of the craziest tiebreakers I've ever seen.
Fifth set: Everything seemed like Federer would get his sixth straight crown, and at 2-2 the rain delayed the game again. Coming back, they continued to defend their service with ease, and went on to 7-7. Nadal finally broke Federer's service and after adding a little suspense with a deuce in the next game, he managed to pull it out and win 9-7 the fifth set and the match.
So in the end the score was 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 9-7. This was the longest Wimbledon final ever, taking 4 hours and 48 minutes to finish, plus more than two hours of rain delays, taking into account the delay before the game, for a total of over 7 hours of intrigue. Nadal is now the champion, and first since Borg in 1980 to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year. Now there's an open road ahead for Nadal to become number one, a new seed has been planted at Wimbledon's sacred grass.... Rafael Nadal held off an incredible fightback from Roger Federer to win his first Wimbledon title and end the Swiss star's reign at the All England Club.
The Spaniard missed two championship points in the fourth set but recovered to win a dramatic rain-interrupted match 6-4 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 6-7 (8-10) 9-7.
The final shot was struck in near darkness on Centre Court at 2115 BST.
Nadal, 22, is the the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win the French Open and Wimbledon back to back.
Asked about the moment of victory, Nadal told BBC Sport: "It's impossible to explain what I felt in that moment but I'm very, very happy.
"It is a dream to play on this court, my favourite tournament, but to win I never imagined."
Federer, who made just one of 14 break points, said: "I tried everything, got a little late, but look, Rafa is a deserving champion, he just played fantastic.
"(The rain) didn't make it easier but you have to expect the worst and he's the worst opponent on the best court. It's a pity I couldn't win it but I'll be back next year."
Federer, 26, had been trying to become only the second man to win six consecutive Wimbledon titles, and so surpass Borg to match Willie Renshaw, who played in the 1880s.
The defeat brought to an end his unbeaten run of 65 matches on grass, and arguably his reign as the undisputed king of tennis.
On sealing victory, a tearful Nadal climbed through the stands to celebrate with his family and supporters before heading to the royal box to speak to members of the Spanish royal family.
Federer, meanwhile, suffered the unpleasant experience of watching, dejected, from his chair as he came to terms with finishing runner-up for the first time.
It may be little consolation but he played his part in one of the great finals.
The pre-match billing had it down as tennis's version of a world heavyweight title fight and it lived up to the hype, Nadal finally winning the longest Wimbledon men's singles final ever after four hours, 48 minutes.
Coldplay :
Viva La Vida
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own
I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
"Now the old king is dead, long live the king"
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand
I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you'd gone there was never
Never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world
It was a wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh, who would ever want to be king?
I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know St. Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Ohh...
Hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know St. Peter won't call my name

Rafael Nadal held off an incredible fightback from Roger Federer to win his first Wimbledon title and end the Swiss star's reign at the All England Club.
The Spaniard missed two championship points in the fourth set but recovered to win a dramatic rain-interrupted match 6-4 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-7 (8-10) 9-7.
The final shot was struck in near darkness on Centre Court at 2115 BST.
Nadal, 22, is the the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win back-to-back the French Open and Wimbledon titles.

Federer, meanwhile, suffered the unpleasant experience of watching, dejected, from his chair as he came to terms with finishing runner-up for the first time.
It may be little consolation but he played his part in one of the great finals.
The pre-match billing had it down as tennis's version of a world heavyweight title fight and it lived up to the hype, Nadal finally winning the longest Wimbledon men's singles final after four hours, 48 minutes.
He now adds the Wimbledon crown to the four French Open titles he has won, while Federer will look to defend his one remaining Grand Slam title at the US Open next month.
Nadal went into the match as the favourite in some people's eyes, having thrashed Federer in last month's Roland Garros final and with an 11-6 head-to-head record against the Swiss.
After a half-hour delay to the start because of rain, the Majorcan made the better start with a break in game three, saving three break points on his way to the first set.
The momentum shifted at the start of the second as Federer raced to a 4-1 lead, whipping a vicious cross-court forehand for a winner to finally convert a break point in game two, but Nadal came roaring back with five straight games for a two-set lead.
With dark clouds gathering overhead, Federer looked ready to be put out of his misery at 3-3, 0-40, in the third but the champion roused himself superbly, reeling off five straight points and holding serve to lead 5-4 when rain stopped play after two hours and 14 minutes.
Play resumed following a break of 80 minutes and when it came down to a tie-break, rejuvenated Federer dominated with some huge forehands and unstoppable serving, sealing it with an ace.
The fourth set saw the two players inspired and by the closing stages the enthralled Centre Court crowd were chanting the names of both men. Another tie-break was required to separate the pair - and it was an all-time classic.
Federer recovered from 5-2 down only to miss a set point with a wayward forehand.
Nadal then lost his first championship point at 7-6 when Federer hit a winning serve, and the Swiss saved a second match point with an outrageous backhand winner.
The match was destined for a fifth set, and Federer obliged with a service winner to the delight of an enraptured 15,000 spectators.
When the rain returned at 1933 BST with the score at 2-2 in the decider it seemed likely that everyone would be back on Monday, but the shower passed after 50 minutes and battle was rejoined.
Despite the gathering gloom, the final set was simply breathtaking.
Federer earned a break point in game eight, Nadal two in game 11, but both players remained rock solid under the pressure until they were locked at 7-7.
Three more break points were saved by Federer but the champion was rocking, and Nadal finally landed the knockout blow when the world number one was forced into a forehand error.
All that remained was for Nadal to serve out for the title and, after Federer saved championship point number three with a rasping backhand, the Spaniard sealed it when the Swiss netted a forehand.
Wached by his parents, and coach and uncle, Toni, the 22-year-old fell to the floor before beginning his journey through the stands to celebrate. http://www.MustSeeBeforeYouDie.com Auteur : MustSeeBeforeYouDie Tags: Kirsten Dunst trailer | | Wimbledon 2008 day 7 preview - 147 sec It may be windy and it may be a touch chilly for the time of year but, hey, the rain is holding off and Wimbledon is steaming ahead like one of those magnificent transatlantic liners of old. Steaming into the second week with the finest programme of the fortnight, too.
These days Wimbledon stands alone among the four Grand Slams as the one which does not play on the middle Sunday - something welcomed by the players as well as tournament staff and we media folk - so this means that the fourth rounds of both men's and women's singles are due to be completed in their entirety in one day. Weather permitting, of course.
It is time for regrouping and reassessment; who among the seeds is still standing from the wreckage of the opening week and who is likely to be contesting the big one by the weekend? Let's deal first with the ladies. Here, in the shape of two players, there is one name which stands out: Williams. While the big names around them have toppled, sisters Serena and Venus have needed not so much to stride forward as to just stand tall and play their game.
Both are rather good at that. Six times in the eight years which constitute our new century one Williams or the other has conquered Wimbledon: Venus four times, Serena two. Quite a statistic, isn't it? No wonder their father, Richard, is already sporting a celebratory cigarillo.
The smoke should still be curling after today, too. Serena, the sixth seed who has not conceded a set so far, takes on a fellow-American, the only American, man or woman, not called Williams who is still standing. She is Bethanie Mattek, a 23-year-old ranked 69 who saw off last year's runner-up, Marion Bartoli, in the last round. Serena won their only previous match, two years back in Cincinnati, at a cost of four games.
As for Venus, four-time winner and defending champion, progress has been even smoother, if possible, against opposition which did not rate as over-demanding. Now comes another name which has not illuminated the boards of the sport so far, Alisa Kleybanova, one of the horde of young Russians who are threatening to take the women's tour by storm. Kleybanova is only 18 but already ranked inside the top 50. Venus, with a fifth reunion with the Venus Rosewater Dish in the forefront of her thinking, will have assessed all this and is ready to swing into action.
Jelena Jankovic, the second seed, is the highest-ranked woman still involved, albeit with a sore left leg after her laboured third round win on Centre Court. She did not even know who her next opponent is and when she was told "a Thai girl" she replied, "Tiger who? Tiger Woods?" No, not Tiger, but a 31-year-old Thai called Tamarine Tanasugarn, who has been playing tennis to match her bewitching name. However, if the Jankovic leg holds up, Tamarine could be destined for a Thai sunset.
Now the men's draw, where the big three has been reduced to the big two with the departure of Novak Djokovic. Roger Federer, five-time champion and owner of the nicest gold-trimmed cardigan in town, booked his place in the last 16 on Friday with his third simple victory, but things may become a touch tougher today when he faces Lleyton Hewitt. The feisty Aussie, winner of the title in 2002, is the only other former champion in the field.
They go back a bit, these two. All the way to 1999 in fact, 21 matches in all. Federer has won 13, Hewitt eight, but none of the last 11. So Federer is favourite for the round dozen but, quite rightly, he points out that Lleyton does not belong on the same planet as the word "quitter". That said, expect an entertaining battle and a win for Cardigan Man.
There is a frisson in the air over London and a spring in the step of most British who care for sport, since Andy Murray and his new curly hairdo have waltzed into the fourth round without undue fuss, matching his previous best at Wimbledon. Not quite time yet to start mentioning how long since a Brit won this thing (Fred Perry, 1936) but we are entitled to be getting a trifle excited. The level will be racheted up if Andy can surmount his next hurdle, the French number one and eighth seed Richard Gasquet, who was a semi-finalist at Wimbledon 2007.
Gasquet reckons he is playing "not my best tennis, but good tennis for sure" and says he is looking forward to taking on that hairdo on Centre Court. Murray's attitude? Bring it on.
Looking forward more than one match is foolhardy, but let's do it anyway and point out that if Murray gets past Gasquet he could meet Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals. First, of course, Rafa must himself see off the Russian, Mikhail Youzhny in today's extravaganza of choice matches.
