| UNICEF: ECHO and UNICEF promote Plumpy'nut production - 122 sec NIAMEY, Niger, 18 May 2007 -- Two years after Niger's severe nutrition crisis, the sight of undernourished children is less common than it was, but chronic malnutrition still affects more than 50 percent of the country's young children. And 10 per cent of Niger's children suffer from acute malnutrition, even when the harvests are good.
Like many therapeutic health centres across Niger, the UNICEF-supported clinic in Tillabery -- an hour away from the capital, Niamey -- gives Plumpy'nut to severely malnourished children. The high-protein, high-energy, peanut-based paste typically comes in foil wrappers or small plastic tubs, which are practical for children who can easily eat them.

| UNICEF: Providing latrines and promoting health in Ethiopia - 149 sec MOTA DISTRICT, Ethiopia, 17 October 2007 - According to a joint monitoring programme by the World Health Organization and UNICEF, only 13 per cent of Ethiopians have access to latrine facilities, one the lowest levels of sanitation coverage in the world.
In 2003, UNICEF, in collaboration with the Amhara regional health bureau, embarked upon a rural sanitation initiative designed to bring rapid improvement. They promoted the construction of pit latrines using simple technology and locally available resources.
The success of the pilot sanitation project initiated in Amhara, in collaboration with UNICEF, has attracted the attention of other regional health bureaus working to promote sanitation and hygiene practices in Ethiopia.

| UNICEF: Victims of Ethiopian food crisis share their stories - 101 sec SIRARO DISRICT, Ethiopia, 2 June 2008 -- UNICEF estimates that 126,000 children are in need of urgent therapeutic care for severe malnutrition in Ethiopia, and this number is likely to climb as more harvests fail.
The agency also estimates that 3.4 million Ethiopians will need food aid over the next three months, and that 6 million children are in danger of malnutrition.
"A child with severe malnutrition is in immediate danger of death," said UNICEF's Deputy Representative in Ethiopia, Viviane Van Steirteghem. "For the moment, NGOs are working in 55 woredas [districts], and they are, together with government, providing the capacity to take care of about 40 to 50 per cent -- but there is a big capacity gap to take care of the remaining children."

| UNICEF: Protecting children's rights in Somalia - 68 sec HARGEISA, Somalia, 29 November 2007 -- The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) turned 18 last week -- a momentous occasion for children all around the world. It was of particular interest to youths in Somalia, one of only two countries in the world that have not ratified the CRC.
Somalia has been in conflict for the past 16 years and many children in the country have grown up not knowing what it means to have the right to education, clean water or protection.
Despite the lack of an official treaty, UNICEF is still supporting activities in Somalia that pave the way for the realization of children's rights.
At the official level, UNICEF is engaged in advocacy with members of parliament, government ministries and civil society representatives to promote the Convention.
