Underrated Underground Bands Part 26: Origin - 239 sec
Origin - Staring from the Abyss Origin was formed in 1997 by guitarist/vocalists Paul Ryan and guitarist Jeremy Turner. They were soon joined by Clint Appelhanz (bass guitar), Mark Manning (vocals) and George Fluke (drums). On May 23, 1998, the band played their first show as an opener for Suffocation. They recorded their first demo Coming Into Existence on June 20th of that year, and secured an opening slot on the "Death Across America" Tour; other major death metal bands on the tour included Nile, Cryptopsy, Oppressor and Gorguts. In 1999, George Fluke was replaced by John Longstreth and Doug Williams replaced Clint Appelhanz. With the new lineup, Origin secured a show with Napalm Death on April 14th. Other various headlining regional shows followed, including a spot in the "November to Dismember" metalfest in Texas. On December 16th, Origin signed to Relapse Records. Origin played the March Metal Meltdown in New Jersey and was invited to take part in Contaminated 2000. They shared the stage with (Exhumed and Cephalic Carnage), and participated in another "November to Dismember" in California. Origin joined forces with Poland's Vader, along with label mates Cephalic Carnage and Dying Fetus, for the high profile Death Across America 2000 Tour. Soon after, Origin embarked on yet another tour, this time alongside Candiria, Cryptopsy and Poison the Well. They made another Milwaukee Metalfest appearance in 2001, and participated in Summertime Slaughter that year with Skinless, Impaled and Vader. Origin secured a headline tour of before beginning work on their next release. Introducing two new members, James Lee on vocals and Mike Flores on bass guitar, Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas was faster, darker and more complex than their previous effort. Immediately following the release of Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas, Origin hit the road as part of a summer metal tour with Nile, Arch Enemy and Hate Eternal. Following the tour, Jeremy Turner resigned from the band and Clinton Appelhanz (this time playing guitar instead of bass guitar) returned. Origin toured with Immolation, Vader, and The Berzerker, followed by another tour with All That Remains, Scar Culture and Crematorium. More problems arose, and Origin had to cancel the tour with Nuclear Assault in January 2003. Shortly thereafter John Longstreth resigned from the band; James King was chosen to fill the spot. The band played their first show with the new line-up in September 2003 in Topeka, Kansas, where the "Portal" video was done. The band then landed a headlining west coast tour in January 2004 with Uphill Battle. In the summer, Origin toured the Midwest, playing the Milwaukee Metalfest 2004 and The Texas Death and Grindfest with label mates Soilent Green and Kill the Client. In March of 2005, Origin returned to release Echoes of Decimation. Numerous United States tours immediately followed, including headlining performances at the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival and Ohio Deathfest. The band then joined forces for a summer North American tour with Malevolent Creation and Animosity in a tour that was sold out at many venues. The tour for Origin was 52 days long, and only three shows had to be cancelled. As of spring 2006, James King and Clint Appelhanz have left Origin, and are now in death metal/grindcore group Unmerciful, along with Jeremy Turner and Tony Reust. In the summer of that year, John Longstreth returned to Origin. They embarked on another summer headlining tour across North America, with Paul Ryan performing all guitar parts for the live Origin performances. In February/March of 2007, Origin played in Europe with label mates Misery Index and Necrophagist. On 20 June 2007, it was announced on Origin's forums that Jeremy Turner rejoined Origin. The band also announced that they are writing and recording for the next Origin album, which is tentatively planned for a 2008 release on Relapse Records. Origin entered the Chapman Recording studio November 5, 2007, in Kansas City, with the same line-up as on the Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas album. Robet Rebeck is engineering this album. April 1, 2008, Origin released their 4th full-length album titled "Antithesis". "Faster, heavier and decidedly more advanced than anyone could have ever envisioned metal becoming, 'Antithesis' is a modern-day death metal classic, which proves ORIGIN stand head and shoulders above their peers,". Underrated Underground Bands Part 33: Sikth - 251 sec
Sikth- Peep Show SikTh was a progressive metal band from Watford, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom. SikTh formed in January 2000, but consolidated their line-up in March 2001. That line-up consisted of dual vocalists Mikee Goodman and Justin Hill, guitarists Dan Weller and Graham Pinney, bassist James Leach and drummer/percussionist Dan Foord. Their first official release was an EP titled Let the Transmitting Begin. Released in 2002, it featured three tracks, as well as a limited edition live CD from the BBC Radio 1 recordings of the same songs. The band's first release for Gut Records was an EP titled How May I Help You? Released in 2002, it featured three tracks, two of which were on the band's debut album. A video for the song "(If You Weren't So) Perfect" was also contained. The song "How May I Help You?" contained a story about a person called Rodney. The song was made into an animated video, which was written, directed and produced by Mikee Goodman. It went on to win the best video award in The Big Cheese Magazine, as well as reaching number 1 on MTV UK, and being an A-list video on MTV Asia. [edit] Debut album SikTh's debut album The Trees Are Dead & Dried Out Wait for Something Wild was released on August 18, 2003 through Gut Records. The album was produced by the band themselves, along with Andrew Scarth. Mixing duties were handled by Colin Richardson, whose credits include Machine Head and Slipknot. Two singles were released from the album in "Scent of the Obscene" (October) and "Peep Show" (December). How May I Help You? was released as an EP, featuring their first ever song "Suffice" as well as a slightly different version of "Tupelo." In support of the album, they went on to appear at Download Festival at Donington Park in 2003. The band traveled to Japan in 2004, firstly supporting Anthrax and Killswitch Engage, then playing at the famous Fuji Rock Festival in August with Lou Reed, PJ Harvey and Primus. The album has sold approximately 30,000 copies in the UK, Japan and Australia. Second album The band returned in 2006 with their second full-length album Death of a Dead Day. It was released in the UK on June 26, 2006 on their new label Bieler Bros. Records. It was earlier released in the US on June 6. The album entered the UK album charts at number 55. The album was once again produced by the band themselves, with mixing duties handled by Matt LaPlant. In support of the album, SikTh performed at Download Festival 2006 prior to its release, as well as an extensive UK tour afterwards. An EP titled Flogging the Horses was released in October 2006, featuring demo versions from Death of a Dead Day tracks, as well as a remix version of "Where Do We Fall?". The track "Each Other and Ourselves" was also included, which was a bonus track on the Japanese version of the album. The EP was limited to just 1,500 copies. Vocalists depart On May 8, 2007, it was announced that vocalists Mikee Goodman and Justin Hill would be leaving the band at the conclusion of the July 2007 "This Ain't the Summer of Love" UK tour set, due to their ongoing projects and producing careers. Mikee Goodman's and Justin Hill's final performance in SikTh was at the Carling Academy, Islington, London on September 14, 2007 (this was a rescheduled show). Band split On May 27, 2008, SikTh announced that the band had decided to split due to numerous factors. The main reasons cited for their break up was the inability to find replacements of ex-vocalists Mikee and Justin, as well as commitment to other projects. Underrated Underground Bands Part 30: Byzantine - 352 sec
Byzantine - Hatfield Another talented band that is unfortunately gone. Byzantine formed in the spring of 2000 by bassist Chris "Cid" Adams, guitarist Tony Rohbrough and vocalist/guitarist Chris "OJ" Ojeda after their former bands New Family and Temper split up. Byzantine wrote four songs and started to practice with a drum machine. Seven more songs were written and 2000/2001 demo was recorded in a friend's studio and self-released in 2001. Byzantine became a part of the local West Virginia Heavy Metal scene.Jeremy Freeman filled the drummer position in Byzantine for a short time and left the band in February 2002. Subsequently the band recruited long time friend guitarist Matt Wolfe as a drummer. Six songs were recorded in 2003 in the Broadmoor Studios in Huntington, WV and released as Broadmoor, first demo featuring Wolfe on the drum kit. This aroused the interest of Lamb of God's drummer Chris Adler and Byzantine had a short East Coast tour with Lamb of God, which helped them to obtain new fans and a deal with Prosthetic Records. Soon after Byzantine released their debut album The Fundamental Component in February 2004, which created the band's trademark sound. Subsequently Byzantine toured with Lamb of God and Shadows Fall as well as played the main stage of New England Metal and Hardcore Festival in 2004 (and later also in 2006). Chris "Cid" Adams was replaced by Michael "Skip" Cromer and Byzantine returned to the studio to record their second album, 2005's ...And They Shall Take Up Serpents, which received high praise both abroad and domestically. A fan-oriented DVD Salvation, featuring exclusive material, scenes, in-studio clips, interviews, the uncut version of the "Jeremiad" music video and the performance of the never-before released "Cradle Song", have been released in 2007 and the number of Byzantine's fans grew. On January 22, 2008, the band's third studio album Oblivion Beckons was released. The band split up four days after the release. Musical style and lyrical themes: Byzantine plays progressive thrash compared by the Decibel Magazine to Testament and Megadeth with power groove moves comparable to Meshuggah or Lamb of God with occasional clean vocals.[6][7] Byzantine plays technical metal and retro-minded Bay Area thrash. Their music is very aggressive and melodic simultaneously.Byzantine also incorporates instrumental parts in their songs and spoken word vocals.[8] The guitar soloing alone moves from fast parts to prog to jazz. The bands uses also acoustic guitar and tribal-esque drum beats. Byzantine plays very modern metal, exploring different musical territories or song structures, and has been labeled as a "forward-thinking" band. Growing up in West Virginia has helped Byzantine develop a unique sound.[3][14] "We are quite alienated from any big scene," explains Ojeda. "Therefore, we tend to think for ourselves a lot more when writing material."[14] The Gauntlet states "The Fundamental Component is characterized by long songs, melodic thrash and Tony Rohrbough's scathing guitar solos while still embracing technical chaos and the violent groove of bassist Chris Adams and drummer Matt Wolfe."[14] Byzantine singer/guitarist Chris Ojeda says "I think we have a knack for achieving a good balance of chaos and melody".[14] Liz Ciavarella from Metal Maniacs magazine uses formulations such as "Scrupulous time-shifts and strategically-placed off-beats; forever infectious grooves, breakdowns (Thrashdowns?) and ceaseless experimentation that end in intricate catchy Metal mantras" to describe Byzantine's style. Byzantine is often compared to heavy metal bands such as Meshuggah, Pantera, Slayer and Testament.[2][3][14] Byzantine frontman Chris Ojeda, who plays guitar while singing, is considered to be in the tradition of Hetfield, Mustaine, Cavalera and Shuldiner.[14] Lyrically the band is influenced by such bands as Meshuggah, Carcass and Lamb of God and focuses on problems indigenous to their home such as the religion in American society. PS2 Underrated Gem: True Crime: New York City - 571 sec
This is a series of gameplay vids I'm doing highlighting overlooked games for the PS2. Overshadowed by the GTA series, the True Crime series seems at first like a second rate ripoff. Though I've only kinda played the original (Streets of L.A.), and wasn't too impressed with it, I decided to take a $10 chance with this one, and was pleasantly surprised. Unlike the way I play GTA, I've found myself not going on huge murderous rampage sprees. In fact, I find that I like doing the random police calls in this game, and it makes up for not killing everything I see. I used to think that playing from a cop's perspective would cripple the fun, but I really enjoy the way this game makes being a cop seem like more than a title. You'll constantly have the ability to respond to a variety of emergency calls (or you can just ignore them and play the missions), or even shake down random people on the street. Throughout the game you'll gain police levels in an almost RPG kind of way which unlocks new weapons, and new vehicles, and etc. The combat system is also more in depth than GTA's, and the dual stick control is a godsend. The game isn't perfect though. Even though it's graphics are amazing for a PS2 game of this type, the game does have a lot of technical issues. There a lot of glitches in this game. Some even lead to freezups, and other weird glitches. My best advice is to save often. Though I'd say that GTA is better, True Crime New York City is still a great game for those who want to get into it. True Crime: New York City is also available on the Xbox, Gamecube, and PC.

Produced by Daniel Bergstrand (Meshuggah, In Flames), their debut LP, 'The Silence We Deserve,' is about to slam the metal scene with 10 enigmatic tracks like "Terminal Treachery" and "Behind the Shadows.' Underrated Underground Bands Part 16: Manmade God - 235 sec
The path to potential is charted by he who walks it. Such is the philosophy of Manmade God, a band that is square on the road to realizing theirs. Guitarist Craig Locicero and drummer Steve Jacobs, called by an insistent muse, founded the Bay Area band straight out of their prior project, Forbidden. Inspiration was instant, realization was distant, but imminent. "Something really clicked," says Locicero, "a bell, that rings inside you, tells you how to write a really great song. I don't know what happened, or how it really came about, but we wanted to follow our hearts to the fullest, not deviate from what brings us to the most emotional, melodic place." Key to fruition would be vocalist Pann, who'd been Pong-ing between coasts in a frustrating search for a band. He was on the verge of surrender when he hooked up with Manmade God. "I said, I've been doing this for about five years and I've had it. I'm done. Maybe this isn't for me...but I'm going to put one more ad out in the paper...'" The ad got bites, one of which was from Locicero, who called but failed to leave a number. Pann immediately dismissed the call, but "he called back a couple minutes later and left his phone number. I went down to the studio because Craig was so persistent. When I sat down and they started playing...I was blown away. There was so much power...it was really an intense experience." Locicero was reciprocally awed, saying an immediate and urgent alchemy within MMG manifested at Pann's enlistment. "Before Pann joined, we were more of a fingerpainting experiment; it never felt like a band. Pann just made all the difference, having direction and emotion." Within two weeks, MMG's predestined lineup debuted at The Boomerang Club in San Francisco. Locicero, "The reactions went from Who are these guys? to "I can't wait to see these guys in the future." Soon after, the band met up with Stone Temple Pilots' Eric Kretz, who was impressed enough to produce MMG's 3-song demo. We were getting a great response from the demo, so we decided to head to LA. and showcase for some labels, says Jacobs. We soon realized that we where not ready for that yet. Pann had only been in the band for 3 months, and we had some more growing to do. So we locked ourselves in our studio, and didn't come out until we knew who we were musically and personally. It was during this period when search for Greater Thinge and Safe Passage were born. We wrote with no inhibitions and reached for higher plains without fear, he continues. The disc subsequently caught the ear of Brian Joseph Dobbs (Echobrain, engineer with renowned producer Bob Rock), with whom the band smithed their next demo at the famed Plant in Sausalito. These demos reached American Recordings and eventually a private showcase was set-up with Rick Rubin. MMG signed to American in October 2002, their debut produced by Dobbs and executive produced by Rubin. The band broke up in early 2004 following the departure of vocalist Pann and a split from their record label. The remaining members have teamed up with former Systematic frontman Tom Narducci in a new band, Spiralarms. PS2 Underrated Gem: Bombastic - 505 sec
This is a series of gameplay vids I'm doing highlighting overlooked games for the PS2. Bombasic is the PS2 sequel to the extremely addictive PS1 game Devil Dice. They have changed a few things. The puzzle mode has more of a quest feel to it as opposed to just solving a bunch of puzzles like in the original game. The Multiplayer is just as frantic as well. As you'll be able to see from this vid, I suck at the multiplayer, but I had fun nonetheless. This game may be a little too cutesy for some people, but don't let it's image keep you from trying one of the most fun puzzle games on the PS2. Bombastic is only on the PS2.

PS2 Underrated Gem: Deus Ex: The Conspiracy - 601 sec
This is a series of gameplay vids I'm doing highlighting overlooked games for the PS2. Now, before you PC gamers get on here and talk about how the PC version is better, save it. I have both versions, and yes the PC version is a little better, but the PS2 still retains the same great gameplay that made the PC version great. Deus Ex is a kickass game no matter what version. Best described as a FPS/RPG hybrid, Deus Ex: The Conspiracy is easily one of the best games on the PS2. I know that's saying a lot, but once you start playing the game you'll be hooked. For those not familiar with Deus Ex, you play as JC Denton a government agent who's drawn into a world of conspiracies, and secret societies. The story has a ton of twists, and covers a lot of topics that will interest many a conspiracy prone gamer, or just any gamer who likes a deep story in their games. The gameplay is free form. That means that you have the choice in the game. Though there is a linear narrative throughout the game, and you will always end up at the same place in the end, it's how you go about getting there that matters. Each level is riddled with multiple branching paths, and hidden areas. The game leaves it up to you to choose how you want to play. If you wanna go in there like Rambo with guns blazing, and killing anything and everyone in sight, then you're allowed to do so. However, if you wanna take the minimum force approach, and don't want to take a life, or are just into exploring, then find another route, and in Deus Ex there is always another route, or two. The real beauty of it is that this gives the game endless replay value, because you'll never play through the game the same way twice. You are also rewarded with skill points for exploring every area. Those skill points can then be used to level up various abilities like lock picking, hacking, and ever your weapon skills which is where the RPG elements come into play. The PS2 version also has better character models than the PC version does, and it adds fully CGI beginning and ending sequences. However, considering that this game runs on the original Unreal Engine from 1998, the game's graphics still aren't that impressive when compared to other PS2 games of it's time. In fact, the graphics are the weakest part of the game, but those who partake in Deus Ex will soon find out that the game's appeal isn't in it's visuals, but it's enthralling gameplay.
