Doris Ulmann (1884-1934) was an American photographer, best known for her photographs of the people of Appalachia made between 1928 and 1934.
Ulmann grew up in New York City, where she graduated from the Ethical Culture Fieldston School. Ulmann also graduated from the Clarence H. White School of Modern Photography.Other students of the school who went on to become notable photographers include Margaret Bourke-White, Anne Brigman, Dorothea Lange, Paul Outerbridge, and Karl Struss.
The folk singer and composer John Jacob Niles took four trips to Appalachia as an assistant to Ulmann, during which time he collected and documented many traditional songs.
Doris Ulmann preserved the rural cultures of the southeastern United States through her photographs. She worked particularly in the "Southern Highlands" of the Appalachian Mountains, creating portraits of the residents. In 1933, she contributed photographs to Roll, Jordan, Roll, a book by novelist Julia Peterkin about the vanishing black culture, known as Gullah, of the South Carolina islands and coastal areas. In collaboration with musician, actor, and folklorist John Jacob Niles, she made what Niles called annual "folklore and photographic expeditions" to the Southern Highlands between 1928 and 1934.
Ulmann's equipment was somewhat cumbersome and old-fashioned for her time. She most often used a 6½ x 8½ inch, tripod-mounted view camera, although the lightweight, hand-held camera was more prevalent, and she produced soft-focus platinum prints. The muted, warm tonality of the platinum image was a gentle complement to her respectful, sympathetic portrayals of subjects whose lives were different from her own. John Jacob Niles (1892-1980) was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on April 28, 1892. He began collecting folk songs at a young age and composed his first song by 1907. Although he specialized in folk music, he was trained at the Cincinnati Conservatory, sang with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and studied in France. He began publishing his music collections in 1925. Between 1927 and 1934 he accompanied Doris Ulmann on her rural expeditions, acting as chauffeur and factotum. Niles and his Appalachian dulcimer appear in many photos with Ulmann's rural sitters, and he continued to collect music as they traveled. A transcription of Niles' remembrance of Ulmann is available.
He is known as a collector, composer, and performer. Among his better known folk compositions are "I Wonder As I Wander" and "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair," but he also composed a cycle based on the poetry of Thomas Merton. After Ulmann's death, Niles worked at the John C. Campbell School in Brasstown, North Carolina, site of many Ulmann photographs. John Jacob Niles died March 1, 1980.
More information about Niles is available through The John Jacob Niles Center for American Music at the University of Kentucky. The Center has republished the 1961 Ballad Book of John Jacob Niles, which includes many of the songs he collected on the Ulmann trips. Some recordings are available through www.john-jacob-niles.com. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina. All the original documentary materials from those years are archived at the Folk School, which is right on the North Carolina-Georgia-Tennessee border in what used to be called "the Southern Highlands" of Appalachia. I'll gradually add more detailed commentary about each clip.
Segment #1: Ben Entrekin, fiddle, with Sam White, guitar. Ben was a champion fiddler at the Knoxville World's Fair, and was the son-in-law of the legendary Cherokee fiddler, Manco Sneed.
Segment #2: An interview with Margaret Campbell at her home in Gatlinburg, TN. Ms. Campbell was instrumental in the craft revival of the 1930s, helping to start the Brasstown Carvers. Here she shows two carvings in her personal collection, by Tom Brown of Pleasant Hill, Tennessee. These carvings are featured in the Allen Eaton's 1937 survey, Handicrafts of the Southern Highlands, which was funded and published by the Russell Sage Foundation. The book also included the iconic photography of Doris Ulmann.
Segment #3: The Leatherwood Singers of Peachtree, North Carolina. This clip includes three generations of the gospel-singing family. Hi, I am Christine Von Lossberg and I am a self taught artist who likes to paint visionary or fantasy paintings of fairies, angels, mermaids, benevolent ET's and beautiful women.. Goddesses. I also paint portraits, shells, eggs and sculpt Elfun dolls and little hedgehog animals called the Whimseys. I have a few famous people who own my art..Elizabeth Taylor, Barbra Streisand, Shirley MacClaine, Carrie Fisher, Tracy Ulmann, Julie Andrews, Raven De Lumiere and Olivia Newton John. I was born in Long Beach, where I was raised on the beach with my three wonderful siblings. I had a happy fifties childhood with an amazing 50's mom who was the brownie leader, awesome housewife, incredible singer and performer and charity worker and dad who worked in the Space Program from it's inception, everything from the Gemini to the Space Shuttles. His signature went to the moon on the Apollo 11 where he was supervisor of the safety division. My sisters and brothers all worked in the space program too. I am the only UFO and ET hobbiest though, the other space program! Most of the time I have lived near the beach or in the mountains in the forest. I also like to write and illustrate children's books and poetry. I am a face and body painter and have painted people including many stars parties plus all over the world. Germany, Italy, Hawaii, England, Canada, Holland and Mexico, where I have also had many art shows, a few in museums. I have two grown children, a beautiful and talented daughter Andria and a wonderful and creative son, Adam. I have two fantastic grandson's, Glenn and Skye who live in Germany with my daughter. I get to visit every couple of years which I love to do. My son and his girl Aura are going to have a baby in January YES!I just found out that It's a GIRL! I have a mini pinchure named Roxie who is my sweetest little fur angel. I have a cockatiel named Joey who landed on my sisters head in her backyard. She gave him to me. Now every morning he gives me a wolf whistle when I get up. You can read a few of my children's stories (they're copywritten) in my blog. You can check out some of my paintings on the pics if you like. If you watch the slide show push the thing on the bottom to the right to see the whole screen and make it go faster too.
