| Uganda Rising - 138 sec Uganda Rising | Film Synopsis
For two decades, the Acholi people of Northern Uganda have been caught in a civil war between a rebel group whose main objective is inhumane terror and a government whose military response has often increased misery and suffering. Over one and a half million people have been displaced into camps and over 25,000 children have been abducted to be used as soldiers and sex slaves.
And yet through it all, every day across Acholi-land something remarkable happens. Against a backdrop of dismal statistics, miniscule opportunity and unpredictable terror, in a part of Uganda forgotten by the world, children who have never known peace, face the day as if to live this way is normal, as if they still believe in the future. These children are the embodiment of resilience and hope. This film is the story of Uganda, her stolen children, and the fight to be free.

| Colonialism in 10 Minutes: The Scramble For Africa - 589 sec An excerpt from the film Uganda Rising showing in a (very!) brief overview the utter decimation of Africa that took place via colonialism and the so-called "Scramble For Africa."
Despite the film's focus on Uganda, I think this excerpt sheds light on just how much of the violence that we see today actually has a colonial/European precedent rooted in exploitation and racism.
It's also an instructive lead in, I think, to Darfur in 10 Minutes: An Overview of the Conflict in Sudan.
Uganda Rising was produced by Alison Lawton.
It was directed by Jesse James Miller and Pete McCormack (me). Jesse also edited the film, and I wrote it.

| Inside the LRA - Uganda - 1230 sec Feb 2007
Lured by a government amnesty, senior commanders from the LRA are coming out of the bush and speaking about their time with Joseph Kony. In this rare report, they justify their actions.
"He is from God. What he predicts comes true", states Captain Ray Apire, explaining Kony's hold over his soldiers. "By making people suffer, he is bringing people close to God". Commanders explain how they interpreted Jesus' command to "Go and catch people", seeing it as an order to abduct children. For the first time in a decade, the government and LRA are involved in serious peace talks. But the conflict is far from over. A woman breaks down describing how her daughter was abducted the previous night. This is the second time her girl has been kidnapped so she knows she will probably be killed. | Thou Shalt Not Kill - Uganda - 1026 sec May 2000
The Ugandan doomsday cult were convinced that a Millennium Armageddon was going to occur. Just months after this prophecy was not fulfilled, hundreds of Joseph Kibweteere's followers burned in their compound.
Joseph's wife Theresa and Peter Bananga, the only survivor of the cult massacre, tell us their side. Ex-prostitute Credonia Mwerinde, whose claimed vision of Mary prompted Kibweteere to form the clan, said Theresa was evil. Theresa claims her husband is dead and he and Credonia are in Hell for perverting Christianity. The devotion by members of other clans eerily resembles the description given by sole cult survivor Peter Bananga. "They want to have a god who will answer their prayers immediately". A chilling look at how prophets much like Kibweteere continue to attract followers. | Energy in Uganda - The World Bank - 174 sec Since 1986, Uganda has evolved from a nearly "failed state" battered by violent dictatorships to a country with a track record of growth and institutional reform. Uganda's GDP growth has averaged 6 percent per year between 1987 and 2005. Compared to only 10 percent in 1987, close to 60 percent of Ugandans have access to safe water today. In 2005, Uganda ranked third among IDA countries in Africa in terms of country performance, institutional capacity and management. | Abduction - Uganda - 1206 sec Dec 2003
Ugandan children are growing up in fear of being abducted or killed as the Lord's Resistance Army continues to terrorise Northern Uganda.
The LRA has abducted over 5,000 children in the last year and made them into child killers. Thousands flee to neighbouring villages during the night in a desperate attempt to avoid abduction. After 17 years of civil war, President Museveni's call for patience is beginning to wear thin. Uganda's plea for international help still goes unheeded. The US are unwilling to send ground troops to such perilous terrain and aid organisations are struggling to sustain supplies. "The LRA are beyond the boundaries of negotiation," claims the President. His confidence lies in "a military solution", which for many promises only more violence and hardship.
