"One thing I want to point to is the low CPU utilisation. [On the AMD desktop it was 10-30% and about 70% on the Intel PC]. One of the reasons why this is important on the desktop because once you get a CPU utilisation above a certain threshold, your fan kicks-in, the systems starts to get a lot hotter and probably more importantly is that you're going need that extra CPU space if your background tasks kicks-in as you are watching a movie. This could be Windows Defender. It could be a virus protection. And in this example, we are kicking-on an iTunes audio encode, from a WAV file to AAC... The AMD system's utilisation is a bit higher and Intel's reached 100%... And you'll see some frames dropping".

We offer what it's called hybrid graphics. So they're some manufacturers that would have the 780G on the motherboard as well as a discrete solution from ATI, called the 4850, actually working in parallel together where you get about a 70% bump by having the 2 cards together. The Intel solution doesn't use both of the GPUs. What happens is you pull the plug and you go integrated, you plug it back in and you have discrete. And we have that same functionality as well but we go the extra added benefit where the integrated GPU and the discrete GPU are working together. So it's kind of a notch above [the Intel solution]".

Inspite of AMD's desktop/mobile slower chips versus Intel's, consumers actually can hope having a better user experience on AMD-based systems than Intel's for an equivalent price, or the same level of experience but for a lot cheaper.
And the main reason is AMD's superior integrated graphics chip that boost the overall PC performance for "GPU/graphics limited" applications like hard-core gaming or DVD playback. However, Intel chips will shine when running CPU-intensive applications like video encoding.

By comparing a PC with a Phenom X4 2.6GHz with two 4870s graphics cards in Crossfire mode and another PC with Intel's QX9650 at 3Ghz and also the two same ATI Radeon cards, Moorhead wants to prove that you can have a very similar visual experience with a PC that costs $900 less!
"The only big difference here is the CPU and obviously the motherboard... Basically it's a very consistent experience between the 2 platforms. This is Call Duty 4... A huge difference though. The Intel system is $900 more expensive than the AMD game system primarily driven by the processor cost and the motherboard. So what this says is essentially when it comes to Call of Duty 4 is GPU limited. Particularly when you're running it at the higher resolutions with anti-aliasing turned on, anastropic filtering up really high... It doesn't say that the processor doesn't matter but what it says here is that at $215 processor not a $1,000 processor, you'll get a very similar experience... What could you do with the extra $900? You could buy 20 game titles, a 27" monitor, a cool racing gear with the seat to play an F1 game...".

I knew that Steve Jobs was coming to Palo Alto when I saw a PR friend of mine (Hi, Kirstin!) who's usually there when he is! How lucky though as he could have gone to Valley Fair in Cupertino (where Woz was waiting in line overnight!) or San Francisco. But I guessed that leaving a few blocks from downtown Palo Alto, Jobs would pop inside and feel this crazy atmosphere for himself ;-)

I spoke today with product manager Brian Allen about the latest HP tablet PC scheduled to ship next month and did a short video (after the jump).
"The HP Compaq 2710p is using the upcoming Intel's low-voltage processor and Intel is not releasing the chip until the end of this month when it launches. That's we had to wait until then to ship our 5th generation tablet... while IBM has just shipped it's first!", he said.

Since early this morning I'm attending AMD's Analyst day at the company's headquarters in Sunnyvale, CA. So far I was surprised by Rick Bergman's (the graphics guy in the picture!) demo of a PC with a 3GHz Phenom desktop quadcore and three graphics cards.
Although the demo showed that the 3GHz quad-core actually exists, it does little to quelch worries of delays of the 3GHz quad-core server chip dubbed "Barcelona".
"The product is stable at 3GHz [...] If the desktop version ships in Q4, you can be sure the server version will ship sometimes later", confirmed Henri Richard, AMD's chief marketing and sales.

In a roundtable with the European press, John Chambers confirmed the "end of life" of the Linksys brand, replaced by Cisco.
This decision follows Cisco's move last April to make it easier for Linksys resellers to add Cisco products to their offerings and vice versa. Also, just a few weeks ago, Cisco created a new division solely focused on the SMB market and headed by Rick Moran, formerly marketing chief of several Cisco communications applications like the unified communications portfolio, Cisco IPICS, Cisco Small Business Systems (Linksys One), TelePresence, Business Video and Physical security.
"It will all come overtime into a Cisco brand. The reason we kept Linksys' brand because it was better known in the US than even Cisco was for the consumer. As you go globally there's very little advantage in that", said Cisco's CEO.

Skyfire's mobile Internet browser is quite impressive. After you install the browser client on your Windows mobile phone (and soon for Symbian, iPhone and Blackberry), you'll be able to display "any web site, any web applications and any web video" just like on your PC. So how do they that?
Skyfire is using a client-server architecture. Meaning that most of the protocols, plug-ins, etc... are on the server, with a very compact client on the phone. According to Skyfire's CTO Erik Swenson, the company developed the browser from scratch in C++.

Kind a strange venue to show off a next generation "joystick"! I'm not really a gamer but Belkin marketing manager Leo Cheng seemed pretty excited to show the "n52te" that in some cases/video games could replace both a mouse and a keyboards. Cheng point out the backlighting, joystick knob and the on-board memory for programmable keys. He uses it to play World of Warcraft but said it works well too with Counter Strike and Starcraft. The n52te is compatible with Mac and PC, not consoles though, and will start shipping mid-November for about $70. His video after the jump.

What a show! Surrounded by top models (Petra was there!), tennis player Serena Williams and more (check video here soon), it was hard to get through the various stations where HP was presenting its new handhelds, PCs and workstations. But the showstopper was Blackbird 002, HP's latest gaming PC. And according to Voodoo co-founder Rahul Sood, Blackbird "obliterates the competition". Actually, it does it so well that it even obliterates Voodoo's top of the line PC, the Omen. And I after his presentation, I asked Rahul what should I buy, between Blackbird 002 and a Voodoo PC and his answer came as an astonishing surprise.
"If you have to buy a gaming PC today, get the Blackbird. It has the best engineering. We are working on a complete new generation of Voodoo PC that will even more blow you away. Stay tuned", said Rahul Sood.
