This event can be compared to what another evil tyrannt did centuries ago at the golden temple. The infamous Afghan ruler ahmed shah abdali who came and invaded northern india tried to exterminate the Sikhs and the faith before the Sikhs finally rose up crushed the afghan muslim invaders in many battles and took peshawar, which was formerly in afghanistan now in pakistan, under leadership of the great Sikh general Hari Singh Nawla.
Question: Why did they take refugee in the Golden Temple with arms?
Answer: It is believed that Sant Bhindrwanwale felt if a Sikh wasnt safe at his own holiest shrine, where can he be safe? thus proving he was being persecuted. The Indian govt had ample oppertuntity to arrest Sant Bhindranwale if they wished just arrest him, they did so on many occassions but released due to lack of evidence. However the congress govt had something more henious planned, they wanted to attack the heart of Sikhism, to "teach the Sikhs a lesson" for daring to stand up to the tyrant Indira Gandhi's dicitoral commands when she took India breifly into dictatorship after she came out of prison and won the elections. But little did the govt and its overt/covert terrorist forces know that the Sikhs are a sovereign people who will defend and fight for their rights to self rule (in their homeland greater Punjab), no matter how long it takes.
The Sikhs are allowed to keep weapons as per religious duty do defend the faith, people and places of worship since the time of our 6th Guru who formed the concept of miri puri (temporal and spiritual strength). Thus they are allowed to keep any number of arms at places of worship to defend and fend of oppression and attacks by persecutors (seen several times in Sikh history) as was the case back in 1984 at our holiest shrine. The war was started there and the foundation of Khalistan was laid.. paid with in blood of innocent worshippers.. murdered by evil indian congress govt and its terrorist forces. No doubt more is to spilled in the struggle for justice, faith and nationhood for the Sikhs.
Question: Did Sant Bhindranwale wanted to create Khalistan and why?
Answer: No if you read speechs of Sant Bhindranwale, you will see he wanted to live in Indian union "hindustan" as equal citizens with equal rights but, Sikhs having fought and sacrificed their lives for the freedom for united India on numerous occasions, were treated worse than 3rd citizens in their "own" country. Therefore peaceful agitations were began to address the greviences the Sikhs felt. But the evil Indian congress govt kept trying to take Sikhs for granted and killed many hundreds of innocent peaceful protesters, tried to meddle in Punjabi Sikh politics, tried to assimulate the religion into the brahmin hindu fold, ruled out autonomy in northern India for Sikhs (as promised by JW nehru pre-india's independance), divided already halved Punjab into 3 states, didnt give jobs to qualified Sikh youths because of discrimination against them. Therefore arms were taken up to fight the persecution/oppression by the Indian state and a call for an independant Sikh homeland was raised. It is important to note that call was not made by Sant Bhindrwale, but did state that if the Golden Temple was attacked that would lay the foundation stone to Khalistan.
Question: Is Khalistan going to be a theocratic state?
Answer: No, a proposed Sikh republic of Khalistan would be democratic, dynamic, modern, secular. A state where Sikhs can thrive and exercise self governance while not forgetting the guiding Sikh principle of egaliterian rule as was the case when the Great Maharajah Ranjit Singh ruled the sovereign Punjab and other lands.
