Thousands of ordinary people on both sides of Cyprus welcomed with joy and relief the demolition of the divisive wall at Ledra Street. For decades it has functioned as a symbol of hatred and division between the two communities. This why, its demolition filled the majority of the Cyprus people, Greeks and Turks, with feelings of optimism, and as a step towards peace and reunification of Cyprus.
On the morning of Saturday 10th March 2007, the "Initiative for the Opening of the Checkpoints" organized a musical event at the end of Ledra Street to celebrate this important event.
While the event was in progress, a group from the extreme right wing "Chrysi Avgi" (Golden Dawn) and "EFEN" (National Voice of Greek-souled Youth), completely provokingly, tried to invade the event with blue and white flags and banners with two-headed eagles, shouting their known slogans "Good Turk a dead Turk", "Cyprus is Greek", "There is not Greek - Turkish friendship as long as there is Turkish invasion". With raging intentions they attacked some participants of the event. It was obvious that their effort was to create conflict and to disrupt the event.

Turkish Military ;Guardian of the Peace
The First Army has its headquarters in Istanbul and is widely deployed in the European part of Turkey. Their responsibility is to defend Istanbul, Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits, and Kocaeli Peninsula.
The Second Army has its headquartered in Malatya and is deployed in southeastern Anatolia with a defensive mission facing Syria, Iraq, and Iran.
The Third Army has its headquarters in Erzincan and is deployed in eastern Anatolia, covering the borders with Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan from the east and northeast. For the Armed Forces readiness against any possible crisis in the area (such as during Persian Gulf War and Iraqi War), most of the armored, mechanized, and commando brigades are located in the central region in order to act rapidly into any scenario around our borders.
The Aegean Army (or 4th Army) has its headquarter in Izmir and was established in mid-1970s against growing tensions with Greece in the Aegean Sea. Their responsibility is to defend the Aegean coast from the Dardanelles to the north down to Cyprus, and keeping sea routes and communication lines open in the Aegean. The Turkish peace corps on Cyprus are connected to the Aegean Army command structure.
Turkish Land Forces are composed by; 4 field armies, 10 army corps, 2 mechanized infantry division, 2 mechanized infantry division headquarters (tactical), 1 infantry division and 1 training division, 14 mechanized infantry brigades, 14 armored brigades, 12 infantry/regional security brigades, 5 commando brigades, and 5 training brigades.
Turkish Naval Forces are composed by; 13 submarines, 20 frigates, 21 fast patrol boats, 21 mine sweepers or hunters or layers, 52 various landing ships, 23 various maritime patrol aircraft or helicopters, and amphibious brigade. Navy's subordinate commands are; Fleet Command, Northern Sea Area Command, and Naval Training and Education Command.
Turkish Air Forces are composed by; 19 combat squadrons, 2 reconnaissance squadrons, 5 training squadrons, 6 transportation squadrons, 1 tanker squadron, and 8 surface to air missile (SAM) squadrons. These units are organized into; 2 tactical air forces (1st TAF HQ in Eskisehir and 2nd TAF HQ in Diyarbakir), 2 main air transport bases, tanker base, air training, and air logistics commands. After US Air Forces, Turkish Air Forces have the most number of F-16 aircraft in the world. Turkish Air Forces can participate in exercises conducted overseas flying non-stop thanks to their in-air refueling capability with tanker planes.

I would like to mentıon a few words about the natural origin of the undeniable sincere relationship between the people of Turkey and those of the United States of America.
The Turks are already a Democratic Nation . İf this true fact has not been understood by today's civilised world I must direct attention to the remarkable comments made by our ambassador regarding the last days of the Ottoman empire. Politics in the United States have operated under a two-party system for virtually all of the country's history. For elective offices at all levels, state-administered primary elections are held to choose the major party nominees for subsequent general elections. Since the general election of 1856, the two dominant parties have been the Democratic Party, founded in 1824 (though its roots trace back to 1792), and the Republican Party, founded in 1854. Since the Civil War, only one third-party presidential candidate—former president Theodore Roosevelt, running as a Progressive in 1912—has won as much as 20% of the popular vote.
Within American political culture, the Republican Party is considered "center-right" or conservative and the Democratic Party is considered "center-left" or liberal. The two ideologies competing within the political mainstream are modern liberalism and modern conservatism. The former is distinguished through its belief in Positive liberty, holding that freedom requires the opportunity to live life as one would choose. Consequently liberalism seeks the universal provision of all three generations of human rights, including for example, freedom of speech, property ownership, education, health care and a clean environment - all of which are seen as prerequisites for liberty and human development.[49][50] Modern conservatism is a hybrid of classical liberalism, which promotes Negative liberty, holding that liberty is nothing more than the absence of direct coercion by other individuals, and social conservatism, which emphasizes hierarchy and authority. In 1950 the AKEL organisation restarted the ENOSIS movement. In 1955 Archbishop Makarios after returning from New York met with General Grivas to form the terrorist organisation EOKA. Initially there activities were aimed at the British (although more Greek Cyp. died). In 1957 EOKA started a wave of attacks on Britains, Greeks and Turks. As a defencive measure the Turkish Cyp. created the group 'Volkan', later known as T.M.T.
In 1960 Cyprus became an independent state. Unfortunately this did not stop discriminative behavior towards the Turks. At first this discrimination was political, on 21 December 63' this all changed. The result of the attacks of 1963-1964 is the destruction of 103 Turkish villages and over a thousand houses and shops. Over 25,000 Turkish Cypriots, almost one fourth of the total Turkish Cypriot people were uprooted from their homes and had become refugees.
The problems kept continuing, so on the 10 November 1969, Turkey's premier Süleyman Demiral stated "the Cyprus problem is a national problem".
On the 15 July 1974 the Cypriot National Guard led by Greek mainland officers staged a coup, with the aim of speeding up the ENOSIS process. This led again to much bloodshed. On 16 of June, Ecevit asked the British to join Turkey in enforcing the Treaty of Guarantee. The British declined. The Turkish Cypriot refugees were confined to only 3% of Cyprus in awful conditions. With massacre of Turks continuing Ecevit could no longer wait, so he ordered for the Cyprus Peace Operation. This started on the 20 July 1974. The Turkish troops arrived at Girne.
In order to never allow such horrible acts from happening again the Turkish peace operation created a state for the Turkish Cypriots on the north of the island. At first it was the 'Turkish Federated State of Cyprus'. On the 15.11.1983 the 'Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus' (TRNC) was established.
Unfortunately the international community does not recognize the TRNC thus has put embargoes on them.
