Computing Beyond Turing - Jeff Hawkins - 4397 sec
Coaxing computers to perform basic acts of perception and robotics, let alone high-level thought, has been difficult. No existing computer can recognize pictures, understand language, or navigate through a cluttered room with anywhere near the facility of a child. Hawkins and his colleagues have developed a model of how the neocortex performs these and other tasks. The theory, call Hierarchical Temporal Memory, explains how the hierarchical structure of the neocortex builds a model of its world and uses this model for inference and prediction. To turn this theory into a useful technology, Hawkins has created a company called Numenta. In this talk, Hawkins will describe the theory, its biological basis, and a software platform created by Numenta that allows anyone to apply this theory to a variety of problems. Part of this theory was described in Hawkins' 2004 book, "On Intelligence". This talk is by the Chairman of the Redwood Neuroscience Institute and co-founder of Palm Computing and Handspring, and is co-sponsored by Calit2 at UCSD, the Jacobs School's Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)department, and the Institute for Neural Computation (INC).

The Death of Alan Turing - 596 sec
Rare documentary excerpt traces the decline and subsequent death of the mathematical genius and one of the founders of the modern computer. Turing was also one of the leading codebreakers at Bletchley Park during World War Two, and played a leading role in the breaking of the German Enigma codes.

SALERO - Turing Enigma - 311 sec
In connection with Helsinki Skaala Opera's multimedia opera Turing Machine at Korjaamo, Crucible Studio presents Turing Enigma, an on-line chatting experience, which continues the thematics of the Turing Machine opera and provides new points of view to the fascinating life of Alan Turing (1912-1954). Turing, a heroic wartime code-breaker and pioneer of computer science, made a provocative contribution to the debate regarding artificial intelligence: whether it will ever be possible to say that a machine is conscious and can think. As a person he was "an ordinary English homosexual atheist mathematician", which led him, tragically, to commit suicide by eating an apple laced in cyanide. In Turing Enigma, Alan Turing's spirit has infiltrated the German WWII encrypting device Enigma, the "unbreakable" code of which Turing successfully cracked. The user can engage in discussions with Alan Turing's spirit on the web site. The artificial character can recognize words and sentences from text typed-in by users and then reply accordingly with text and by "spitting out" various 3D-animated objects and sounds out of the Enigma machine. Turing Enigma is produced by Crucible Studio, a research group of the Media Lab of the University of Art and Design Helsinki. SALERO - Turing Machine Opera Trailer - 75 sec
Crucible Studio and Helsinki Skaala Opera collaborated to produce a multimedia opera performance on the life of Alan Turing (1912-1954), a heroic wartime code-breaker and pioneer of computer science. Turing Machine DVD is a live recording of this performance at Korjaamo, "the Helsinki Cultural Factory". The Turing Enigma and the 3D scenography for Helsinki Skaala Opera's Turing Machine are realized by the Crucible Studio team as an experimental production for the EU Commission funded research project, SALERO. The Turing Machine opera, composed by Eeppi Ursin and Visa-Pekka Mertanen, is comprised mainly of new electronic music and realtime sampling of old and new material. The libretto is based on the play "Turing" by Miko Jaakkola, which tells the strange life story of this exceptionally talented and complex person. The 3D visualization and digital scenography is by Merja Nieminen and the Crucible Studio team. http://crucible.lume.fi http://www.oopperaskaala.fi http://www.salero.eu

Lecture 12.3: The Amazing Alan Turing - Richard Buckland (extension lecture) UNSW 2008 - 1545 sec
We had a gap at the end of Lecture 12 so Richard gives a short impromptu extension lecture (ie non-examinable) about the amazing thinker Alan Turing. So much to say, so little time, such fast talking. We chat about 3 different major contributions he made to the world - his decryption work during WWII and the Engima Machine; his abstract model of a computer (the Turing Machine) and what things can be effectively "computed"; and finally, briefly only, his thoughts about what it is to be human and the difference between humans and computers - the Turing Test. Alan Turing is a key figure in the development of computing, indeed if I had to pick just one thinker who was the most amazing he'd get my vote. Richard promises to talk about the Turing Test in more depth in the next extension lecture. Also comes up: Epimenides paradox, non computable functions, the halting problem, the Persian mathematician al-Khwarizmi, U-559, Colin Grazier G.C., Anthony Fasson, G.C.,Tommy Brown, Blade Runner, CAPTCHAs. Errata: My memory was about as reliable as usual - I said Tommy stayed outside in a boat but i've since read that all three swam across and went into the U-559. Humbling bravery. I've also since realised that Colin Grazier was from Tamworth in the UK, not the Tamworth in Australia as I had always thought (why are so many English places named after Australian towns?) Finally, something which actually I did know but still managed to get wrong - the important material salvaged was not a cypher machine but quantities of data (ciphertext and the corresponding plaintext I think) which the codebreakers at Bletchley Park were able to use as "cribs" and were of vast help in cracking the submarine code used at that time.

21st Century Turing Test: A heterophenomenological approach - 558 sec
In this video I argue against Chalmers 'Hard Problem' of consciousness and propose that we discuss necessary conditions of what we would consider to be human consciousness. Then decide what so called 'objective observations' we could carry out in order to see what it would take for a machine to be conscious (in the way that we of course define it). For those of you slightly unfamiliar with the topic I have provided a few links which you may find interesting :) The Turing Test history and future: http://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/~asaygin/tt/ttest.html#new Example of AI bot: http://www.alicebot.org/articles/wallace/turing.html Searles Chinese Room: http://members.aol.com/NeoNoetics/MindsBrainsPrograms.html Some Dennett: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mg_7EKxYhDw http://www.kurzweilai.net/articles/art0099.html?printable=1 Wiki entry on quantum consciousness: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_consciousness Arg....I apologise for the misspelling of NESSESERY on the first side!
