| Flight of the Conchords, take out Tuis - 204 sec
The Tuis took Flight - or should that be Flight took the Tuis?- at the 2008 New Zealand Music Awards last night.
Grammy-winning musical comedy duo Flight of the Conchords dominated the major categories in the Tuis at the Vector Arena - and they were reluctant winners in some.
The double act of Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, best known for their self-titled hit HBO series, had a clean sweep at the ceremony, sponsored by Vodafone, winning all three of their nominated categories - best album, best group and breakthrough act - plus sharing the award for international achievement with South Auckland hip-hop star Savage.
Clement and McKenzie weren't on hand to receive their prizes but sent pre-recorded acceptance speeches from America, where they are making a second series of the sitcom.
"We're barely even a group," said Clement on the best group prize. "Phoenix Foundation should have won this," added McKenzie, referring to the acclaimed Wellington band who went home empty-handed.

"I don't even agree with this one. That's not true. I'm not accepting that," said Clement when he and McKenzie were given the night's top award, best album.

My African Grey Tui is 18 months old and has a pretty good vocab. More impressive for me is her understanding of what she says. I recorded a morning conversation of us chatting before we had a shower and started the day. Tui's vocab is much larger than what is here, and she is learning new words (thank you & Your Welcome) and while she does not clearly say them, she uses them correctly. She also started screeching and has learnt to self correct this by telling herself to be quiet. Anyhow, for a 18 month old anything I am pretty impressed with her comprehendsion

For many people the art of Taijiquan has become an essential part of modern life, but more than ever we have such a wide variety of taiji forms and practices available that we get lost in this diversity and so find ourselves more and more distant from the essence of this art.
Taijiquan has spread around the world yet few are aware of the practices adjacent to Taiji, for example, 'Reeling Silk' (chan su jin) and Tui Shou. While Reeling Silk has gained recognition as a more or less independent discipline, with its own distinct principles and sequences, Tui Shou is largely thought of as a method to enhance Taijiquan.
The reasons for this are obvious enough. Tui Shou has been integrated into a compulsory routine by most Taijiquan families for many generations and while this has not necessarily undermined the importance of Tui Shou, it has diverted practitioners' focus away from its real potential.
Nowadays, it is difficult to find any references to Tui Shou as an independent practice in its own right. Most literature published on the subject draws direct parallels between the practice of Taijiquan forms and Tui Shou. Of course, these Tui Shou skills do translate very well to the practice of the Taiji forms because when practicing Tui Shou with a partner the situation challenges many aspects of our practice revealing any weakness quickly and irrefutably.
Many also think of it as an art involving partners or opponents, which is true, but by no means the only way to understand Tui Shou. Tui Shou is a complete alchemical system that helps us to physically comprehend the nature of eight fundamental forces and to gather and refine energy for personal transformation (Alchemy - The Art of Transformation). From this angle, it is an utterly independent internal martial art with components of solo and dual practice, devoid of competition, except in so much as we battle to achieve mastery of ourselves. The partner is used to measure the truth of our own condition.
