The Anaheim Ducks were honored by President Bush at the White House
on Wednesday (February 6) for their 2007 Stanley Cup championship.
The Ducks won the trophy in June for the first time in franchise
history, a 6-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators in Game 5 of the championship
final series clinching the title.
"I don't know if Americans understand but this team was 16 and
five for the first four rounds and became the first west coast team to win the
Stanley Cup and that's a big deal, and so it's my honour to welcome you to the
White House," Bush told the team.
Arriving in the early afternoon, members of the 2007 Ducks took a tour
of the historic building before meeting with Bush and presenting him with a
jersey as a gift.
"I will remind you that you have achieved something that millions
of kids dream about and plenty of old timers too. You've set a great example
for them and I congratulate you on your championship and you'll forever be
remembered for the rest of your lives as Stanley Cup champions," Bush
added.
The Ducks found time in between games in New York with the Rangers and
the Islanders to travel to Washington for the ceremony.
Anaheim, who only have three American born players on the squad, ended
a six-game losing streak on Tuesday with a 3-0 victory over the Islanders.
Still riding a wave of euphoria after their Australian Open success, Novak Djokovic and Nenad Zimonjic could turn out to be unwelcome guests in Moscow for Serbia's Davis Cup tie against Russia. Russia have proved to be the recent powerhouse in the men's team competition, winning the title in 2006 and finishing runners-up to the United States last December, but their chances of making it past even the first round in 2008 look rather slim.
Unfortunately, Serbia may not be able to count on the services of Janko Tipsarevic, who stretched world number one Roger Federer to five sets in the third round at Melbourne Park. Tipsarevic has been suffering from a stomach upset and has been replaced by Viktor Troicki for the Friday's opening singles. Russia will be relying on a trio who have failed to shine in recent months.
World number four Nikolay Davydenko will be joined by Mikhail Youzhny and the more unpredictable Marat Safin, now ranked 61st in the world.
Following Thursday's draw, Djokovic will face Youzhny in match one on Friday, followed by Troiki against Davydenko.
