A primeira pedra do que viria a ser o mais famoso arco triunfal do mundo foi lançada no ano seguinte. Mas problemas com o projecto do arquitecto Jean Chalgrin e o declínio do poder de Napoleão adiaram a conclusão da obra monumental até 1836. Com 50 metros de altura, o arco é actualmente o ponto de partida para a maioria das celebrações e desfiles de vitória.

The Arc de Triomphe is a monument in Paris that stands in the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle, also known as the Place de l'Étoile (Star Square). It is at the western end of the Champs-Élysées. The arch honours those who fought for France, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars, and today also includes the tomb of the unknown soldier.
The Arc is the linchpin of the historic axis (L'Axe historique) — a sequence of monuments and grand thoroughfares on a route which goes from the courtyard of the Louvre Palace to the outskirts of Paris. The monument was designed by Jean Chalgrin in 1806, and its iconographic program pitted heroically nude French youths against bearded Germanic warriors in chain mail and set the tone for public monuments, with triumphant nationalistic messages, until World War I.
The monument stands over 51 metres (165 ft) in height and is 45 metres wide. It is the second largest triumphal arch in existence. Its design was inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus. The Arc de Triomphe is so colossal that three weeks after the Paris victory parade in 1919, marking the end of hostilities in World War I, Charles Godefroy flew his Nieuport biplane through it, and was caught in a newsreel.

Alceste, ou Le triomphe d'Alcide is a tragédie en musique in a prologue and five acts by Jean-Baptiste Lully. The French-language libretto is by Philippe Quinault, after Euripides Alcestis. It was first performed at the Paris Opéra on January 19, 1674.
The opera was presented in celebration of King Louis XIVs victory against Franche-Comté, and the prologue features nymphs longing for his return from battle. The opera itself concerns Alceste, princess of Iolcos and queen of Thessaly, who in the first act is abducted by Licomède (Lycomedes), king of Scyros, with the aid of his sister Thetis, a sea nymph; Aeolus, the god of the winds; and other supernatural forces. In the battle to rescue her, Alcide (Hercules) is triumphant, but Alcestes husband, Admète (Admetus), suffers a mortal wound. Apollo agrees to let Admète live if someone will take his place in death. Alceste volunteers herself but is rescued by Alcide, who loves her. The opera ends with a celebration of Alcestes return from the underworld and of Alcides noble gallantry in returning her to her husband and relinquishing any claims to her.
Alceste is Lullys second tragédie en musique, after Cadmus et Hermione.

Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687)
Italian-born composer (French nationality from 1681). Entered service of Louis XIV 1653, composed instrumental music for the court ballets. From 1664 collaborated with Molière in series of comedy-ballets which were forerunners of French opera, the last and most famous being Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, in which Lully danced role of the Mufti.
Having assimilated both Italian and French styles and tastes, from 1673 he turned to opera composition and obtained from the King exclusive rights to arrange operatic performances in Paris.
His death was caused by a gangrenous abscess which formed in his foot after he struck it with the long staff he used for beating time on the floor while conducting a Te Deum to celebrate Louis XIV's recovery from illness.

The "Arc" was created just after the First World War, which had put paid to so much of France's best bloodstock. France Galop's decision to found a classic race was thus both courageous and optimistic. Since that time, the Arc's reputation has never ceased to grow, and today the race stands as a glowing tribute to the many men and women who have worked tirelessly to promote flat racing in France.
This new inter-generational horserace, limited to 18 starters, has maintained the same race conditions as the Prix du Conseil Municipal (it has always been run on the first Sunday in October, except in 1939 in 1940, over 2,400m) but without handicapping.
The mile and a half turf track comprises an uphill and downhill slope with a challenging rising straight as you come out of the final bend. The Arc winner will be an animal with speed and stamina in equal measures. The winner is also usually drawn less than 10 (on the inside) from where he or she can remain in the leading group and then attack the 533 m straight to the finishing post.
The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe was first run at Longchamp racecourse on Sunday October 3rd 1920. The first horse across the line was Comrade, who picked up FF150,000; second was King's Cross, winning FF18,000, and Pleurs was third, winning FF10,000.
The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Lucien Barrière offers prize-money of 2 million euros including 1,142,800 euros to the winner. The Arc weekend is Europe's biggest two-day combined purse, with total prize money of 4.5 million euros on offer.
The Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe has been run 84 times since 1920. Sunday 1st October 2006 will herald the 85th running of what is generally considered to be the world's greatest horserace.

L'arc de triomphe de l'Étoile appelé partout dans le monde l'Arc de Triomphe, est situé à Paris, sur la place de l'Étoile, à l'extrémité ouest de l'avenue des Champs-Élysées, à 2,2 kilomètres de la place de la Concorde. Haut de 50 mètres et large de 45 mètres, il est géré par le Centre des monuments nationaux.
La place de l'Étoile forme un énorme rond-point de douze avenues percées au XIXe siècle sous l'impulsion du baron Haussmann, alors préfet du département de la Seine. Ces avenues « rayonnent » en étoile autour de la place, notamment l'avenue de la Grande-Armée, l'avenue de Wagram et, bien sûr, l'avenue des Champs-Élysées. Des pavés de couleurs différentes dessinent sur le sol de la place deux étoiles dont les pointes arrivent pour l'une au milieu des avenues, pour l'autre entre les avenues.
