Valene made us all very proud when she charmed her way into the top 5 of the Miss World 2007 pageant. In this video you can see that she is clearly all-natural (not as rehearsed as the others) and quite a charmer.
It was also the first time Trinidad and Tobago tied with Sweden since the world cup 2006 when the Soca Warriors held the Swedes at bay 0-0. So Valene, your name will now forever be associated with two of our proudest moments on the international stage in recent times. :-)

El Santísima Trinidad fue un navío español, el más grande de su época, siendo el único barco de 4 puentes construido, por el que recibiría el sobrenombre de El Escorial de los mares.
La artillería de la que disponían sus baterías tras la última reforma de 1803 era de 136 piezas de artillería, incrementadas a 140 poco antes de la Batalla de Trafalgar con el embarque de 4 obuses de a 4 libras (32 de a 36 libras, 34 de a 24, 36 de a 12, 12 de a 8, 16 obuses de a 24, 4 de a 4 y 6 esmeriles) llegando pues a convertirse en el barco más grande y artillado de su tiempo. De hecho la Armada Española dispuso de 237 navíos de línea botados entre 1687 y 1853. Trece de ellos disponían de tres puentes con artillería de 100 a 120 cañones (como el Santa Ana o el mismo Santísima Trinidad). El resto de ellos de dos puentes que tenían entre 50 y 80 cañones.
En octubre de 1769 en los astilleros de la Habana fue botado el navío que por Real Orden recibiría el nombre de Santísima Trinidad. Con las siguientes dimensiones: eslora 213 pies de Burgos y 8 pulgadas (61,40 m), quilla 182 pies y 5 pulgadas (52,72 m), manga 57 pies y 9 pulgadas (16,59 m), puntal 28 pies y 11 pulgadas (8,31 m); arqueó 4.902 toneladas (7.443,69 m3) con un lastre de 1.546 quintales (71,12 tn). Según Colina, en escrito de 30 de septiembre de 1768, las medidas eran: eslora de alefriz a alefriz 100 codos (57,47 m); quilla de codillo a codillo 85 codos y 6 pulgadas (48,99 m), manga 27 codos (15,52 m), puntal 13 codos y 12 pulgadas (7,76 m), plan 13 codos 12 pulgadas (28,74 m), astilla muerta con el plan 12 pulgadas (28,74 cm), luz de cada porta de popa a proa 1 codo y 17 pulgadas (0,98 m), calado a popa 13 codos (7,47 m) y a proa 12 codos y 6 pulgadas (7,18 m); costó de fábrica 40.000 ducados españoles.
Además la madera fue transportada hacia la Habana desde el poblado de San Jerónimo por el estero Vertientes en la provincia de Camagüey, hoy municipio Florida. Se utilizaron maderas preciosas como Caoba, Júcaro y Caguairán.
Después de ser probado en alta mar se dieron cuenta de que sufría de varios desperfectos que fueron corregidos en los astilleros de Ferrol y Cádiz. Tales fueron las modificaciones ejecutadas, que se convirtió en el único navío del mundo en tener cuatro puentes. Pasó a tener las siguientes dimensiones: eslora 220 y 6 pulgadas (63,36 m), quilla limpia 188 pies (54,02 m), manga 58 (16,67 m), puntal 28 y 9 pulgadas (8,26 m), plan 29 pies y 10 pulgadas (8,57 m), calado a popa 29 pies y 7 pulgadas (8,50 m) y a proa 27 pies (7,76 m); con 20.000 quintales (920 tn) de lastre, medía 2.475 toneladas (3.758 m3). La tripulación y guarnición era de 1.071 plazas y 25 criados.
Fueron muchas las batallas en las que estuvo presente, pero se lo recuerda sobre todo por su trágico final en la Batalla de Trafalgar (1805). Estuvo en aquella ocasión bajo las órdenes del jefe de escuadra Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros, y con Francisco Javier de Uriarte y Borja como Capitán de Bandera. Tras una dura y heroica lucha en la que envió al fondo del mar a dos navíos ingleses y obligó a otro a bajar bandera y rendirse, fue capturado por los ingleses en muy malas condiciones, con más de 700 muertos y 100 heridos. Los ingleses pusieron todo su empeño en salvarlo y llevarlo a puerto inglés, pero finalmente se hundió a unas 25 ó 28 millas al sur de Cádiz.
Actualmente se ha realizado una réplica de dicho barco, comenzada en Galicia, y terminada en Algeciras, y que finalmente ha sido ubicada en el Puerto de Málaga, donde funciona como restaurante, discoteca y sala de exposiciones. Símbolo del final del poderío español en los mares, la mayor arma de guerra de su época permanece ahora en el fondo del mar.

This is the wall of Lapeyrouse Cemetery in Port of Spain and it separates the dead from the living. For two days straight, the constant pulsating rhythms from music trucks may have awoken many spirits from their peaceful rest.
This is Trinidad and Tobago on a Carnival Tuesday 2007, and the mood is sombre one. Masqueraders and spectators were wandering around in search of the Carnival Jumbie to cast the dancing spirit. People were walking rather that wailing, chipping rather than wining.
This year, large bands offered an all inclusive with amenities such as a Bar, Food stall and Toilet facilities. These were all mounted on a convoy of trucks and band members were protected by a security staff with a long and unending rope. This was to filtered out any stormers that may disrupt the public display of a private street party. But whether this took a huge bite from the profits hoped to be made from street vendors, they clearly were the winners.
Smaller Bands were less lax and steelbands were exhausted from playing or by too just tired waiting in queue to cross the stage at some competition located far and wide. Nevertheless, this five minute video will give you a synopsis of the festival and it begins with the Traditional Fancy Sailors. You will note the particular dance these older Mas men still do. Larger bands such as Tribe seemed lost in their direction, and a smaller Sailor band with a steelband looked quite inviting. Powder fights were the factor as masqueraders combated themselves with it. There was the Desperadoes flagman who was accosted by a young woman with a brief wine and a couple in Hearts that worked it a little longer. There were the elaborate Fancy Indians, Blue Devils and dirty oily Imps. Big Mike had his following of many female masqueraders and a young man played himself with the help of a blaring Music truck. Finally ending with the World's best Steelband, Exodus as thebookmann walked through the path of two of their trucks. http://thebookman.wordpress.com/
