The day London froze. Inspired by http://www.ImprovEverywhere.com and made a reality by 100's of volunteers. At exactly 3:30pm on a secret cue, almost everyone in the square froze. The few bewildered tourists didn't know what was happening. For 5 minutes the participants held their positions, and then magically everyone unfroze.
Why? Well, why not.

A comienzos del siglo XIX, Francia e Inglaterra se encuentran enfrentadas. Napoleón, interesado en contar con la flota española para poder desembarcar un ejército de 160.000 hombres en territorio inglés, promete a Godoy que le entregará un reino en una de las provincias portuguesas.
Aceptada la alianza entre franceses y españoles, el 20 de agosto de 1805 se hallan concentradas en Cádiz las flotas de ambos países, dirigidas por Villeneuve. En respuesta, el almirante británico Nelson ordena que Cádiz sea bloqueada por mar.
El 17 de octubre, Villeneuve recibe información del servicio de inteligencia: 4 buques británicos salen al Mediterráneo desde Gibraltar escoltando un convoy, y otros 2 buques se hallaban en Gibraltar reaprovisionándose y sometidos a reparaciones. Pensando que la flota de Nelson se ha debilitado, se decide a sacar la escuadra de Cádiz.
El encuentro entre ambas flotas se produce el día 21. Los ingleses se han dividido en dos columnas, mientras Villeneuve ordena virar en redondo a toda la línea, contra los consejos de los españoles. En consecuencia, la línea se rompe, dejando grandes claros al enemigo.
A media mañana comienzan los combates. Las andanadas se suceden, con clara ventaja para los barcos ingleses, que maniobran para conseguir buenas posiciones de tiro. La descoordinación entre los aliados españoles y franceses es manifiesta, obligados a defenderse de manera desesperada. Las bajas se suceden por doquier.
La mayor parte de los navíos aliados fueron incendiados, hundidos o capturados. Churruca, Alcalá Galiano y Gravina, la elite de la oficialidad de la Marina de Guerra española, murieron en combate, así como el inglés Nelson. Villeneuve fue hecho prisionero.
Los españoles perdieron 1.022 muertos y 1.383 heridos. Las pérdidas británicas fueron 1609 muertos ó heridos, y las franceses de más de 3000 hombres y más de 1000 heridos. El número total de capturados, entre franceses y españoles, sumaba unos 8.000. La victoria sobre el combinado franco-español permitió a Inglaterra tener la supremacía naval en los siguientes 100 años.

1000 like-minded people were attracted to the square via Facebook to take part in a Improv Global mission to freeze Trafalgar Sq. for five minutes.
The mission was inspired by http://www.improveverywhere.com, a group that successfully froze Grand Central Station for five minutes.
Once the five minutes had passed members continued on with their acions as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.
