John McCain Town Hall Las Cruces, NM 08/20/08 TRANSCRIPT: AUDIENCE MEMBER: Senator McCain I truly hope you get the opportunity to chase Bin Laden right to the gates of hell and push him in as you stated on your forum. I do have a question though. Disable veterans, especially in this state have horrible conditions, their medical is substandard. They drive four hours one way to Albuquerque for a simple doctors appointment which is often canceled. Our VA hospital is dirty it is understaffed, it is running on maximum overload. The prescription medicines are ten years behind standard medical care we have seven hundred claims stacked up at the VA office in Albuquerque some of them are ten and seven years old waiting to be processed in the mean time these people are homeless. My son is an officer in the Air Force, and I am a vet and I was raised in a military family. I think it is a sad state of affairs when we have illegal aliens having a Medicaid card that can access specialist top physicians, the best of medical and our vets can't even get to a doctor. These are the people that we tied yellow ribbons for and Bush patted on the back. If we don't reenact the draft I don't think we will have anyone to chase Bin Laden to the gates of hell. JOHN MCCAIN: Ma'am let me say that I don't disagree with anything you said and thank you and I am grateful for your support of all of our veterans. John McCain: Town Hall 04/23/08 - 498 sec
John McCain Town Hall and Press Avail Inez, KY 04/23/08 TRANSCRIPT: QUESTIONER: " . . . with the recent recession that's being discussed . . . if America were to go into a recession, what is your plan, once in office, to bring us out of it?" JOHN MCCAIN: " . . . my friends, I believe we are in a recession. I think the numbers indicate that. And I will be glad to discuss the technical aspect of what's a recession or not technically a recession. But I think the reality is and I don't have to tell you here, that American families are hurting. Tonight . . . or this morning, they were sitting around a kitchen table trying to figure out how they're gonna keep their home, make their payments, which have jumped, through no fault of their own. How they're gonna afford healthcare. How they're gonna keep their job. Many of them have had a recent and sudden loss of a job and Americans are hurting today. So let's start out with acceptance of the fact that action has to be taken. I believe that we need to do a lot of things . . . let me just tell you one of the real quick, short term things. I think you know that the price of oil just went up over $118 a barrel . . . I think you probably know . . . that 18 cents out of every gallon of gas that you put in your tank, uh, goes to the federal government in the form of a gas tax . . . why don't we give you, between Memorial Day and Labor Day, a tax holiday [applause] . . .? Is it a huge thing? No. . . . but it might make you go a little further, maybe take an extra trip . . . by the way, on that, the fascinating thing to me, the special interests in Washington greeted that proposal as the end of Western Civilization as we know it. [laughter] . . . we might not be able to construct that $233 million bridge to nowhere in Alaska [applause] . . . the point is that we need, I'd like to have that. Americans are going to have lower taxes and less burden on them . . . there's a thing called a capital gains tax that . . . a hundred million people have a mutual fund or pension . . . Sen. Obama wants to double those taxes on you . . . I want to cut that tax . . . I want to make sure that every student . . . has access to a student loan if they need it, if they've earned it [applause] . . . there are millions of Americans in danger of losing their homes . . . I want to give them a chance to stay in their home . . . they can go down to the post office, apply for an FHA loan that's a thirty year guaranteed loan . . . at the end, when we come out of this recession and we will because I believe that the fundamentals of our economy are good . . . Sen. Clinton wants the government to make the decisions for you on your healthcare, I want the families to make the decisions on their healthcare [applause] . . . I don't think anyone who wants to increase the burden of government regulation and higher taxes has any real understanding of economics and the economy and what is needed in order to ensure the future of this country [applause] . . . government spending has gotten out of control, it's outrageous and it is one of the major factors in causing this economic recession that we are in today and I will stop it. I will stop it. [applause] . . . I will eliminate every pork barrel project that comes up. I have never asked for an earmark or pork barrel project for my state . . ." Town Hall Debate - Humanitarian Deployments: Would you us... - 270 sec
http://www.c-spanarchives.org/library/vidLink.php?b=1223431434&e=1223431703&n=001 SEN. OBAMA: Well, we may not always have national security issues at stake, but we have moral issues stake. I mean, if -- if -- if we could have intervened effectively in the Holocaust, who among us would say that we had a moral obligation not to go in? If we could have stopped Rwanda, surely if we had the ability that would be something that we would have to strongly consider and act. So you know, when genocide is happening, when ethnic cleansing is happening somewhere around the world, and we stand idly by, that diminishes us. And so I do believe that we have to consider as part of our interest, our national interest, in intervening where possible. But understand that there's a lot of cruelty around the world. We're not going to be able to be everywhere all the time. That's why it's so important for us to be able to work in concert with our allies. Let's take the example of Darfur just for a moment. Right now there is a peacekeeping force that has been set up and we have African Union troops in Darfur to stop a genocide that has killed hundreds of thousands of people. We could be providing logistical support, setting up a no-fly zone, at relatively little cost to us, but we can only do it if we can help mobilize the international community and lead. And that's what I intend to do when I'm president. MR. BROKAW: Senator McCain, the McCain doctrine, if you will. SEN. MCCAIN: Well, let me just follow up, my friends. If we had done what Senator Obama wanted done in Iraq, and that was set a date for withdrawal, which General Petraeus and our chief of -- chairman (and/in

Barack Obama TOWN HALL MEETING in Fairless Hills, PA-Part 1 - 213 sec
Barack Obama spoke to hundreds today at a town hall meeting in Fairless Hills, PA. Below is a press release regarding the success of the event. Part 1 Obama Vows to Change Washington, Strengthen Middle Class FAIRLESS HILLS, PA—Senator Barack Obama today toured Gamesa Energy USA, a wind turbine manufacturer in Fairless Hills, and held a town hall meeting with workers where he pledged to end the special interest influence in Washington and strengthen the middle class. "We need real change -- the kind of change that's about more than switching the party in the White House," Obama said. "We need a change in our politics -- a leader who can end the division in Washington so we can stop just talking about our challenges and start solving them; who doesn't defend lobbyists as part of the system, but sees them as part of the problem; who actually says what he means and means what he says; and who will be a voice for middle class Americans every day for the next four years. And that's the kind of President I intend to be." At the meeting, Obama discussed his plans to invest $150 billion over 10 years to build a green energy sector that would create up to 5 million new jobs for workers in Pennsylvania and across the country. He also stressed his opposition to unfair trade deals like NAFTA and vowed to end tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas, while rewarding those that keep good jobs with decent wages here at home. Obama has also announced plans to provide a $1,000 tax credit for working families, cut health care costs for the typical American family by up to $2,500 per year and eliminate income taxes altogether for seniors with an annual income of less than $50,000. His commitment to make a real difference in the lives of working families like those in Bucks County began nearly 25 years ago when he worked as an organizer to provide job training and set up after-school programs in a Southside Chicago community devastated by steel plant closings. Bucks County, once home to a US Steel plant that employed nearly 10,000 workers at its peak, faced similar challenges when the company closed the bulk of its operations in the area by the early 1990s. The Gamesa plant now sits at the site of that former US Steel facility and has already begun to employ hundreds of Pennsylvanians in secure, higher-paying jobs that are part of the emerging green economy in the area. Gamesa is the world's second-largest wind energy turbine manufacturer and the world's fourth-largest energy developer.
