The territory is two thirds hilly and one fourth mountainous. The remainder is constituted of the plains that form the valley of the Arno River. The pre-Etruscan history of the area in the late Bronze and Iron ages parallels that of the early Greeks. The Tuscan area was inhabited by peoples of the so-called Apennine culture in the late second millennium BC (roughly 1350--1150 BC) who had trading relationships with the Minoan and Mycenaean civilisations in the Aegean Sea. Following this the Villanovan culture (1100--700 BC) came about which saw Tuscany, and the rest of Etruria, taken over by chiefdoms (as was also the case at this time in France and the Aegean after the collapse of Mycenae and Troy). City-states developed in the late Villanovan (again paralleling Greece and the Aegean) before "Orientalization" occurred and the Etruscan civilisation rose.
Etruscans - Etruscan civilization - The Etruscans were the first major civilization in this region of Italy; large enough to lay down a transport infrastructure, implement agriculture and mining, and produce vivid art. The people who formed the civilization lived in the area (called Etruria) well into prehistory. The civilisation grew to fill the area between the rivers Arno and Tiber from the eighth century, reaching their peak during the seventh and sixth centuries BC, and finally ceded all power and territory to the Romans by the first century. Throughout their existence, they lost territory to the surrounding civilisations of Magna Graecia, Carthage and Gaul. Despite being described as distinct in its manners and customs by contemporary Greeks, the cultures of Greece, and later Rome, influenced the civilisation to a great extent. One of the reasons for its eventual demise was this increasing lack of cultural distinction, including the adoption of the Etruscan upper class by the Romans.
Romans - Soon after absorbing Etruria, Rome established the cities of Lucca, Pisa, Siena, and Florence, endowed the area with new technologies and development, and ensured peace. These developments included extensions of existing roads, introduction of aqueducts and sewers, and the construction of many buildings, both public and private.. The Roman civilization in the West finally collapsed in the fifth century and the region was left by the Goths, and others. In the sixth century, the Longobards arrived and designated Lucca the capital of their Duchy of Tuscia.
The medieval period - March of Tuscany With pilgrims travelling along the Via Francigena between Rome and France came wealth and development during the mediæval period. The food and shelter needed by these travellers fuelled the growth of new communities around churches and taverns. The conflict between the Guelphs and Ghibellines, factions supporting, respectively, the Papacy and the Holy Roman Empire in central and northern Italy during the 12th and 13th centuries, split the Tuscan people. These two factors gave rise to several powerful and rich communes in Tuscany: Arezzo, Florence, Lucca, Pisa, and Siena. The balance between these communes were ensured by the assets they held; Pisa, a port; Siena, banking; and Lucca, banking and silk. By the renaissance, however, Florence succeeded in becoming the cultural capital of Tuscany and ensured a bright, and peaceful, future for the region.Tuscany

Oggi ad Arezzo ho inaugurato il primo idrogenodotto urbano del mondo. L'idrogeno prodotto da fonti rinnovabili è una nostra scelta strategica e ora la Toscana si candida a diventare il distretto dell'idrogeno in Europa. L'impianto di Arezzo E' capace di servire quattro aziende orafe con 53.000 metri cubi l'anno di gas. L'obiettivo è di aumentare il numero delle aziende servite e, entro la fine di quest'anno, portare a 100.000 mc la quantità di gas erogato. La Regione Toscana ha cofinanziato il progetto con 400.000 euro a fronte di un investimento di 1.200.000 di euro. Attualmente l'idrogeno viene ricavato dal metano, ma è già stato finanziato un progetto per produrlo completamente dal sole con pannelli fotovoltaici. Praticamente prendendo acqua, anche piovana, demineralizzandola e usando l'energia elettrica dei pannelli solari si ricaverà idrogeno puro. Così dal sole e dalla pioggia si otterrà l'idrogeno, che potrà essere usato per saldare l'oro, in altre applicazioni industriali, alimentare i fornelli di casa, produrre energia elettrica o essere il combustibile pulito per automobili e autobus. Questa di Arezzo è una prima esperienza pratica che dimostra che si può concretamente pensare all'idrogeno come fonte alternativa, e sono già pervenute richieste di collegamento all'idrogenodotto da parte di altre aziende aretine e abbiamo registrato un forte interessamento al progetto da parte di Cina, Giappone e Germania. Oltre a questo progetto abbiamo finanziato con 11 milioni il primo distretto italiano dell'idrogeno: con l'Università di Pisa stiamo studiando l'uso dell'idrogeno per la mobilità e nella componentistica nautica. Con questo impiantodimostriamo che si può inquinare meno, senza penalizzare l'espansione. Chiediamo al nuovo governo di accelerare e semplificare le procedure burocratiche per ottenere l'omologazione delle auto ad idrogeno, ma anche di favorire la nascita di una rete nazionale di distributori di idrogeno verde. Anche qui la Toscana dispone già di un primo esempio con la pompa ad idrogeno prodotto con fonti rinnovabili lungo la Firenze-Livorno a Collesalvetti. Vogliamo raggiungere entro il 2020 gli obiettivi indicati dall'Unione Europea: 20% in meno di emissioni di CO2, 20% in più di rinnovabili, 20% in più di efficienza energetica. Anche l'idrogeno ci aiuterà a centrare questo obiettivo.

Olive groves and vineyards line the gentle hilly landscape around the picturesque, Vinci. The birthplace of Leonardo is a simple farmhouse above the square in which only a modest bust portrays this universal genius. Surrounded by the cities of Florence, Siena, and Pisa, Certaldo is a Middle Age village built of red brick and was the birthplace of the author, Giovanni Boccaccio. The heart of Tuscany lies around the provincial capital of Siena, a Gothic city of great artistry. The entire structure, its squares and streets, most of the residential quarterand noble palaces, the cathedral and the church, date back to the 13th and 14th centuries. History and culture combined with the beauty of nature...Tuscany has it all!
