The Tongan Islands are 1,000 miles north of New Zealand and 750 miles east of Fiji. Tongan Kings once ruled the South Pacific, the people were renown for their seagoing abilities. Today these islands are jewels in the vast ocean; the sea and islands remain basically in a pristine state, almost a wilderness in the South Pacific.
We set sail in a ketch and crusie between the islands in the old fashioned sail power way. The water and the air are the same temperature and underwater visibility is fantastic.
A group of local muscians serenade us with an island favorite song.

The Kingdom of Tonga (Tongan for "south") is the only archipelago in the Pacific Ocean never to have been formally colonized. It lies south of Samoa and east of Fiji and is about a third of the way between New Zealand and Hawaii.
The islands are also known as the Friendly Islands because of the friendly reception Captain Cook received. He happened to arrive at the time of ʻinasi festival, the yearly donation of the first fruits to the Tuʻi Tonga and was invited to the festivities. According to the writer William Mariner, in reality the chiefs had wanted to kill Cook during the gathering, but had been unable to agree on a plan.
Tonga is the only surviving monarchy among the island nations of the Pacific Ocean.

Rugby League World Cup 2008: Toa Samoa beats Mate Ma'a Tonga. Samoa defeats Tonga 20-12 in World Cup match proving to be too strong for Tonga.
Center George Carmont's try the only scoring of the second half helped Samoa to a 20-12 win over Tonga on Friday in a Pacific Islands grudge match at the Rugby League World Cup.
Tonga, which beat Ireland 22-20 in its opening match Monday, had the bulk of early possession but trailed 10-0 at Penrith in western suburban Sydney. It was Samoa's first match of the tournament.
Captain Nigel Vagana scored a 90-meter intercept try and Bulldogs National Rugby League star Matt Utai added a second as Samoa led 14-12 halftime after winger Francis Meli had given Samoa a 4-0 lead after three minutes.
Tonga hooker Tevita Leo-Latu scored his team's first try and center Michael Jennings the other after taking a flick pass from Tony Williams, who provided Tonga's other points with two goals.
The match featured several big hits and crunching tackles. Samoan prop Kylie Leulau'i was placed on report by referee Shayne Hayne for a high tackle on Tonga fullback Fetuli Talanoa in the first half.
The prelude to the match between the traditional rivals was fiery. The singers of the national anthems walked off arm in arm with their national flags in a show of unity, but there was nothing friendly about the threatening war dances each team performed minutes later.
Samoa did their war dance the Siva Tau at the same time screaming out Samoan War Cries proceeding from their 35-meter line up to 50. They stood at the halfway line while Tonga did their Sipi Tau, but despite much screaming, mock slitting of throats and swordplay, order prevailed as neither team crossed the midfield line.
At halftime, several players exchanged heated words as they trotted to the sidelines.
The last 10 minutes featured good scoring chances by each team before costly turnovers ended the threats.
At the end of the match, fans invaded the pitch, forcing a television interview with Michael Jennings of Tonga to be cut short when spectators began jostling with the interviewer and Jennings.
Overall both teams played a hard, tough and entertaining game. Everyone kept their heads. Literally!

For the first time in thirty years, the Japanese will begin hunting Humpback whales again this month. But it's thousands of miles away in Tonga that the ripple effects of this will be keenly felt.
Tonga is one of the few places in the world where you can swim with humpback whales. It's estimated that every whale contributes $1 million to the local economy. But now that Japan has decided to resume hunting, locals are worried 'their whales' will be the ones killed. "We do not want the Japanese to come and take our whales". But there are other threats to the whale swimming industry. Some doctors want to resume the killing of humpbacks for local consumption as an alternative to fatty, imported food.

Is this sort of thing harmful to the whales? I don't know. It's delicate. I think it could be, if they were hounded incessantly day after day. But the local operators are pretty careful, and if the whales don't want to be bothered, it's pretty easy for them to take off.
I think whales face much bigger problems than me -- like how climate change will impact their food supply. And there's value in simply reminding people that these big fellas exist.

This is a 3D visualization of the Tonga subduction zone in the South Pacific. The subducting oceanic crust is blue and earthquakes are colored cubes. The red pyramid marks the epicenter of a magnitude 8.0 earthquake that happened on May 3 2006. The Tonga subduction zone is the most seismically active region on Earth.
The structure of the subsurface was created by analyzing the sounds that earthquakes make, this is the science of seismic tomography. The same principal is used in ultrasound imaging, just that the wavelength of the sound waves is much longer in earthquakes 5 to 15 Hz compared with 200,000 Hz in ultrasound imaging.
