| Tutorial: Guide to Mobile Lighting: Wash Lighting - 361 sec
Overview:
This tutorial covers what to consider when buying a wash light.
Types of Wash fixtures:
Par lighting: uses fixtures with colored gels on the front of them to cast a single color. They are the most basic of wash lighting.
Par 38: Up to 150 Watts.
Par 56: Up to 500 Watts.
Par 64: Up to 1000 Watts.
Stage washes:
Designed to color mix with Red, Green and Blue halogen bulbs. It is for creating high instensity light in a smaller area. It will also have built in programs that change colors to the music.
LED wash lights:
LED wash lights have some unique advantages. They use very little power, don't produce heat and can create all colors for every fixture.
LED Pars: have circular wash patterns, best in multiples.
LED Panels/Palettes: have rectangular wash patterns. These can also double as effect lights since the LEDs are setup in a matrix and that can be changed. More dynamic than led par washes.
LED Bars/Strips: These are long fixtures designed to wash a larger horizontal area. These can also be doubled as an effect light since they can be hooked up together so that one pattern will travel from one onto another, unique to led bar washes.
Blacklight:
Blacklight can be a viable option for wash if you expect there to be enough neon reflective surfaces. This can be done by creating a lot of neon decorations or if enough people are wearing white clothing. Be aware that blacklight can cause underwear to glow which may or may not be desireable at certain events.
Types of blacklight:
Incandescent: Creates more of a purple color, with very little glow effect. Stay away from these.
Fluorescent: The most popular method of creating blacklight. Efficient use of power to blacklight, using a 48 inch tube will travel for 30-40 feet.
Compact Fluorescent: Uses smaller bulbs than fluorescent and are very efficient. These bulbs can be screwed into standard lamp sockets. Good for flexibility.
Blacklight cannons/discharge: The most powerful of blacklight options. These fixtures are often overkill for most applications. But they do create extremely intense blacklight.
Beam Angle: Check the beam angle of the wash lights your interested in. A larger beam angle will have a greater wash effect, but will not be as bright as a fixture with a narrow beam angle.
Field Angle: If the field angle is near the beam angle then this fixture has a very sharp beam. If the field angle is a lot larger than the beam angle, the beam itself won't be very noticeable - it will be too fuzzy to see the beam.
Throw distance: The distance that the light will visibly travel. LED fixtures tend to have a lower throw distance than incandescent lights, however for most applications throw distance is not important.

3D visualizer: What is the quality of the 3D Visualizer. Can it display all fixture types you want, are there any limitations (such as displaying lasers)
Live speed adjustments: Can you adjust the speed of a program in a live scenario.
-Sound Active: To the beat of the music?
-by tapping: by clicking the mouse, spacebar etc.
-manual slider: by percentage of the original speed
Transparent Cues: Can you setup multiple programs that effect specific elements of a fixture (gobo, color, strobe etc) In order to maximize flexibility in your light show.
Boundary Adjustments: Can you change the pan/tilt boundaries of any particular program to match the dimensions of the venue.
Color mixing: Does the software display a visual representation of the colors in your wash light fixtures
Timeline: Can you synchronize your light show to react at specific points in a music or video file.
Triggers: How many types of triggers can you use to trigger your light programs

-time: at a specific time
-MIDI: via MIDI commands inside the computer or externally
-Input DMX: Via DMX signals from external hardware controllers
Keyboard Grouping: Can you group fixtures together to make it faster to change common attributes across those fixtures (gobo, color etc)
Input options: Can you hook up an external controller to override the software or to re-route channels for flexibility of control.
Standalone mode: Can you upload a light program in order to leave your PC behind
Auto generator/effects: Does it have generators that will automatically create tedious elements of program such as movement patterns, or changing of gobos at x intervals.
