Scientists have genetically engineered purple tomatoes to contain more of the nutrients usually found in other foods, like beetroot and certain types of berries. Scientists hope that the purple tomato will one day help cure diseases.
STORY:
Researchers at the government funded John Innes Centre in Norfolk, England are looking into how plants can be genetically modified to deliver positive health benefits to people.
[Professor Cathie Martin, University of East Anglia]:
"The reasons for doing this research is that we wanted to develop two lines of food which either has or didn't have different levels of the anthocyanins to test the influence of the anthocyanins in a dietary context on prevention of diseases."
Tests were done on mice that are particularly susceptible to generic cancer, and have fairly short life spans as a result. Scientists fed the mice powder made from regular tomatoes and others from powdered purple tomatoes.
[Professor Cathie Martin, University of East Anglia]:
"The mice that are fed the supplement with the purple tomatoes live about 30 percent longer than the ones on the red tomatoes. So this shows that the purple tomatoes offer some protection against the progression of disease in this animal model."
Encouraged by the positive results in the animal test groups, researchers now hope to see the effect on humans. But not everyone is impressed by the results.
[Andrew Ramsay, Green Party Leader]:
"The Green Party is against GM foods in principle because we are concerned about the risks to the environment, to farmers, and to human health. But we think this latest development is simply unnecessary. There are are lots of foods that contain antioxidants naturally, whether you're talking about beetroot, red grapes, different types of berries. If people take these things as part of their diet, that will undoubtedly bring a positive health effect, we don't need the GM tomatoes to bring this about."
The study has been conducted with scientific partners in Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands, and has been published in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

At least 130 people have been hospitalized. Tomatoes have been the prime suspect in the outbreak that began over a month ago. FDA investigators aren't saying what other vegetables they're looking at, but officials do say they're looking at items that are regularly served with fresh tomatoes.That includes serrano peppers.. Jalapenos.... And salsa. Fresh quacamole is also on the list. Some patients have told the Centers for Disease Control that they ate raw tomatoes in fresh salsa and quacamole.The FDA says there are several possible reasons for the outbreak. The produce could have shared a common shipping or packaging site. Multiple foods could have been contaminated while growing at adjoining farms. They might have also been tainted by a common water source.The government has expanded its search because people continue to get sick, even after the initial warnings that tomatoes were the source of the salmonella outbreak. ___ ___, The Associated Press.
