PF Sloan Sailover - 650 sec
So who IS PF Sloan? If you didn't make the connection between this mysterious behind-the-scenes music man and his many chart hits in the 60's, now's your chance to connect the dots. On August 22nd, HighTone Records will release 'Sailover', the folk rocker and street poet's first U.S. release since he famously walked away from the music business 30 years ago. It features several new Sloan compositions as well as new recordings of some of his most treasured songs, made famous by both himself and other artists (including the hit "Eve of Destruction"). The result is a true to form Sloan album, encapsulating the fullness of his talent while simultaneously giving listeners a look back and forward into his musical history. PF Sloan will tour extensively in support of 'Sailover', including an album release show 8/24 in NYC at Joe's Pub. Album guests include Sloan fans Lucinda Williams, Frank Black, Felix Cavaliere and Buddy Miller. 'Sailover', recorded in Nashville with producer Jon Tiven (Frank Black, Wilson Pickett, B.B. King), includes 14 tracks and finds Sloan rejuvenated with confidence anew. The whole feel of the album is one of freedom and reclamation. The dusty, whiskey-soaked opener "Sins of a Family" features duet vocals by Lucinda Williams, and leads you into a compelling, melancholy tale of real-life woes and struggles, portraying moments of bittersweet intimacy and broken youth. "Eve of Destruction" is Sloan's epic anti-war anthem, a major hit in the 60's as recorded by Barry McGuire and redone here with additional vocals by Frank Black and Buddy Miller. The sense of urgency and passion brings the song full circle, and makes it more relevant than ever. Jam-packed full of talented guests, the album oozes with a tangible sense of camaraderie and energy. You can hear everyone fully into the moment, fully into being part of Sloan's reclamation of his place in musical history. PF Sloan started his adventure into the music biz at age 13, making a single for LA R&B label Aladdin Records. In the early 60's, his group the Fantastic Baggys issued the album 'Tell 'Em I'm Surfin',' which contained the hit title track and the classic surf music song, "Summer Means Fun." By the mid-60's he had become a lynchpin of the storied LA folk rock scene. His hit songs, as sung by others, leapt up the charts. To name a few - The Turtles ("You Baby"), The Searchers ("Take Me For What I'm Worth"), Johnny Rivers ("Secret Agent Man") and Jan & Dean ("From All Over The World"). PF had a musical Midas touch, co-producing the first Barry McGuire and Mamas & Papas recordings on Dunhill, as well as playing the famous lead guitar parts on their hit songs "California Dreamin" and "Monday, Monday", singing the falsetto parts on most of Jan & Dean's records, and serving as the in-house A&R man/producer for Dunhill. With 'Sailover', PF Sloan reminds us of his towering contributions to contemporary popular music.

Eve of Destruction by P.F. Sloan - 336 sec
recorded live in Los Angeles, August 2006. Sloan's new album "Sailover" is available on Hightone Records at hightone.com. Video by Infostructures.net. Show produced by WesternBeat.com. In 1965, PF Sloan's heartfelt song "Eve of Destruction," performed by Barry McGuire, became a Billboard number one hit. The anti-war anthem was one of the first protest songs to make the pop charts. It became the rallying cry for supporters of the 26th Amendment to the Constitution, which changed the voting age from 21 to 18. Sloan wrote a string of hits in the '60s, including "Secret Agent Man" (recorded by Johnny Rivers), "You Baby" (The Turtles) and "Where Were You When I Needed You" (The Grassroots). - excerpt from the NPR radio program on PF Sloan.

Sloan - Underwhelmed - 283 sec
She was underwhelmed If that's a word I know it's not 'Cause I looked it up That's one of those skills That I learned in my school I was overwhelmed And I'm sure of that one 'Cause I learned it Back in grade school When I was young She said, "You is funny" I said, "You are funny" She said, "Thank you" And I said, "Never mind" And she rolled her eyes Her beautiful eyes The point is not the grammar It's the feeling That is certainly in my heart But not in hers But not in hers But not in hers But not in hers We were talkin' about people That eat meat I felt like an ass 'Cause I was one She said, "It's okay" But I felt like I just ate my young She's obviously A person with a cause I told her that I don't smoke or drink She told me to loosen up On her way to the L.C. She skips her classes And gets good grades I go to my courses Rain or shine She's passed her classes While I attend mine While I attend mine While I attend mine While I attend She wrote out a story About her life I think it included Something about me I'm not sure of that But I'm sure of one thing Her spelling's atrocious She told me to read Between the lines And tell her exactly What I got out of it I told her affection had two F's Especially when You're dealing with me I usually notice All the little things Once time I was proud of it She says it's annoying She cursed me up and down And rolled her R's (Her beautiful R's) She says I'm caught up In triviality All I really wanna know Is what she thinks of me I think my love for her Makes me miss the point I miss the point I miss the point I miss the point I miss the point I miss the point I miss the point Hey mister

Sam (& "Princess" Sandra Kimura) Sloan - Taped 06-19-08 - 3608 sec
Sam (& Princess Sandra Kimura) Sloan. Samuel Howard Sloan (b. September 7, 1944), also known as M. Ismail Sloan, is an American author and former securities trader. He is also involved in chess, as a publisher of chess books and former member of the Executive Board of the United States Chess Federation (USCF). While having no formal legal training, he once orally argued and won a case in front of the Supreme Court of the United States. In July 2006, he was elected to the Executive Board of the USCF. He has been married thrice and has eight children by five women. He once drove a taxicab in New York City. He is now a publisher of books and DVDs about chess, go and other subjects. Sloan attended the University of California, Berkeley majoring in mathematics. At the time U.C. Berkeley was a center for student protest during the social unrest of the 1960s. Sloan became the president of the Sexual Freedom League. His book Sex Marchers, co-authored with SFL founder Jefferson Poland, called for sexual emancipation. After dropping out of UC Berkeley, Sloan worked for two years for the Wall Street Investment Banking firm of Hayden, Stone & Co. in the over-the-counter trading department. In 1970, he established Samuel H. Sloan & Co., a registered broker-dealer primarily trading over-the-counter stocks and bonds. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) brought civil actions against Sloan & Co. in 1971-1975 alleging he had failed to maintain adequate books and records. In 1975, the SEC revoked Sloan's broker-dealer registration. After years of litigation, Sloan in 1978 prevailed in the U.S. Supreme Court. Sloan argued the case pro se even though he was not an attorney. The opposing attorney was Harvey Pitt, who was later Chairman of the SEC from 2001 to 2003. Sloan won before the U.S. Supreme Court 9-0. Sloan is the last non-lawyer to argue before the court.[1][2][3] Justice Rehnquist's majority opinion stated that "During this series of suspensions respondent Sloan, who owned 13 shares of CJL stock and had engaged in substantial purchases and short sales of shares of that stock, filed a petition in the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit challenging the orders on a variety of grounds. On October 15, 1975, the court dismissed as frivolous all respondent's claims, except his allegation that the "tacking" of 10-day summary suspension orders for an indefinite period was an abuse of the agency's authority and a deprivation of due process." The Supreme Court agreed. Sloan has written an extensive and definitive lexicon of Khowar, a language spoken in Chitral, Pakistan. His first wife was a native of that region and they had had a daughter. Sloan was later locked into a prolonged and complex custody struggle for his eldest child.[4][5] Sloan had a minor role in a commercially-produced film, that later became a video game, Mahjong Hōrōki Classic

Slightly weird co-incidence. Gordon was a NZ-born Australian citizen who appeared on the original series of Australian Big Brother in 2001. He once joined other Australians in Iraq to form a human shield. He died in China yesterday from a suspected heroin overdose, and was 34 years old.
