Otis Redding wrote this song while living on a houseboat in Sausalito on the San Francisco Bay. We discovered the actual spot where Otis' housboat was berthed, and shot new Super8 footage from the spot for use in this video. Thanks to Anne Garfield, Joel Selvin and Bill Belmont. Otis recorded this song shortly before his tragic death. Steve Cropper finished production on the song after Otis' plane went down. Released posthumously, it was Otis' biggest hit ever. Enjoy!

The man in this video is my Grandad, he was born in Calumet, Michigan in 1920. That's his dock on Sandy Lake, a short drive from the home where he was born. As a child my Grandad would visit his own Grandfather at the very same Lake. It has been throughout his life, a spiritual home.
To fully understand the significance to this film you should watch another of mine called Sandy Lake - Memories. It's a film of my visit to my Grandparents cabin and a film that explains how my Grandad was separated from my Mother ( his eldest daughter ) for 49 years.
This film, of my Grandad sitting on his dock was the main menu for a DVD that I made for my family as a record of my Grandads incredible story.

rhythm and blues musician, bandleader, and impresario Johnny Otis. One source gives Otis' birth name as Johnny Otis, Jr., but since his father used his own birth name of John Veliotes when he ran for the California Assembly in the 1960s, Shuggie's family name at birth was probably Veliotes.[citation needed] Otis began performing professionally at the age of 12, often disguising himself with dark glasses and a false moustache so that he could play in nightclubs.
Otis is a guitarist who also plays piano, organ, drums and bass. He released his first solo album in 1970. The Brothers Johnson's version of his composition "Strawberry Letter 23" reached #1 in the Billboard rhythm and blues chart and #5 in the Billboard pop chart in 1977. He has recorded with Frank Zappa (electric bass on "Peaches en Regalia" from Hot Rats), Al Kooper, Cal Tjader, Etta James, and Eddie Vinson, and more recently Mos Def. David Byrne recently re-released Inspiration Information, including some bonus tracks from "Freedom Flight", on his Luaka Bop record label. It the liner notes, the critic James Sullivan states that Shuggie was offered guitar duties in the Rolling Stones but declined.[citation needed]
