Ostalgie is the coinage of Ost (East) and the German word for nostalgia, a highly contagious "it wasn't all that bad" feeling about a system and culture that actually was; communist East Germany. Luckily, Ostalgie Überkitsch artifacts are now popping up regularly at places like Berlin's German Historical Museum bookshop, a clear sign that the worst of the epidemic is over. After all, everything that lands in a museum is dead.

Whoever visits us with good intentions and obeys the laws of our state can enter at one of our 20 border checkpoints with West Berlin. Proudly we show all guests our florishing country. Travel destination GDR. Recognized nternationally, sought after and respected as trading partner.
For all those who remain unteachable it remains an unsurmountable obstacle: Our border that surrounds West Berlin for 164 km. Here, at the anti fascist protective barrier, where the power of the holdovers from yesterday is over for good, we fulfill our duty as border guards in order to protect yesterday, today and tomorrow. Also to protect those, for whom we build the world of tomorrow. Certainly, our service is not an easy task: a densely populated big city, railway lines, many miles of border in rivers and lakes, being alert is paramount.
But we border guards are not alone. We know we are together in this with the people and the army of the GDR. With our brothers in arms of the Soviet army and the troops of other brother states of the socialist community.
We are border guards of the GDR. Rank and file, everyone strives for. balabalablabla. To be continued. It's too stupid now.

The Ministry for State Security (nicknamed Stasi) of the German Democratic republic (GDR) operated this jail until 1990. Since 1995, it is a museum of a different kind.
It contains prison cells for Chinese Water Torture and had more interrogation rooms than prison cells!
