Fastest Growing City in the World! Middle East 2.0 - Dubai - 281 sec
As seen on 60 Minutes Dubai Inc. reported by Steve Kroft. The Biggest Story in the World --- Dubai - home of the world's largest construction site and one of the most amazing stories in our world today. While millions flock to Dubai annually, from an American perspective it's "the Middle East we don't know". Still surrounded in misunderstanding by so many in the US, the massively positive story of Dubai and Middle East 2.0 is the real story of change in the Gulf. It is a story of peaceful, constructive excellence and the pursuit of dreams. A story very much in line with true American values. Dubai is a city in the emirate of Dubai which is part of the United Arab Emirates or UAE in the Persian Gulf. The UAE is part of the GCC, Gulf Cooperative Council, an economic group of nations along the lines of the European Union (EU). The GCC includes the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The growth in Dubai is representative of the growth in the region. While many in America associate the Arab world, the Middle East, the Gulf or sadly Islam and Muslims with terror and terrorism, war and violence, the real story of the Middle East is what is going on with construction, commerce, art, development and millions of people making a better life for themselves. There is clearly a big difference between the perceptions of Iraq or other areas in the region and reality. Some people tend to think that Iran, the UAE, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are all the same - the region is as varied as the Americas. Richard Branson, Tiger Woods, Martha Stewart, Madonna and Donald Trump all have business ventures in Dubai. The area is known mostly for real estate but many other projects continue there daily. Comments by Bruce Fenton Please note - the NASD is now known as FINRA

Inside Story - Obama's Middle East policy - Nov 10 - Part 1 - 723 sec
America's drive to conclude a Middle East peace deal before President George Bush leaves office in January was always going to be wildly over-optimistic but Barack Obama is likely to set an equally pressing deadline to finish the job. Barack Obama says he'll reshape US foreign policy with particular emphasis on the Middle East. He promises to put the Israeli-Palestinian conflict back on the American agenda. He blames the Bush administration for having neglected the issue. But is his position really that different? And is he free to change foreign policy?

Higher Education in the Middle East and the Next Generation of Arab Leaders - 3193 sec
Google Tech Talks May, 22 2008 ABSTRACT Higher education is changing rapidly in the Middle East with the establishment of new U.S. campuses in the Gulf Emirates and the new King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia. And at a time when Arab opinion of U.S. policies has never been lower, the demand for U.S.-style, English-language higher education in the Middle East has never been greater. These changes are crucial to the future economic, societal and political development in the region. Speaker: David D. Arnold, President, The American University David Arnold became the tenth president of the American University in Cairo in September 2003. Initiatives launched during his presidency include establishing a graduate school of business and new master's degree programs in biotechnology, computer and architectural engineering, television and digital media, and women's studies; a 50 percent expansion of the university's continuing education programs from 30,000 to 45,000 students; and extending scholarship assistance for needy and deserving students from Egypt and the surrounding region. Throughout his tenure, he has also focused on overseeing construction of AUC's new campus, a $400 million on 260 acres in New Cairo, which opens in September 2008. He has also chaired the university's comprehensive fundraising campaign, which surpassed its $100 million goal in 2007. Prior to joining AUC, Arnold was executive vice president of the Institute of International Education, the world's largest and oldest nonprofit educational exchange organization. From 1984 to 1997, he was with the Ford Foundation, initially as the first program officer in the field of governance and later as its representative for India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Arnold began his public service career in 1975 in his home state of Michigan as a budget analyst with the Michigan Department of Labor. In 1977 he joined the National Governors Association in Washington, D.C., to manage intergovernmental relations on employment, housing and economic development issues. He later served as executive director of the Coalition of Northeastern Governors, a think tank and policy institute serving the northeast region of the United States. Arnold received his B.A. from the University of Michigan and M.P.A from Michigan State University

Blood and Oil - Middle East in WWI Pt 1: Surprise Attack - 312 sec
Part 1 - Surprise Attack. Enver Pasha, minister of war for the Ottoman Empire, agrees to a secret alliance with Germany in August 1914. Istanbul mobilizes its army but remains neutral for nearly three months. Eager for a fight against Russia, Enver orders the Turkish Black Sea Fleet to bombard Russian seaports on October 29th. The Triple Entente -- France, Russia and Great Britain -- reacts swiftly and declares war against the Turks within a week. Except for the Dardanelles/Gallipoli campaigns, the extensive combat operations in the Middle East during World War I have been largely overlooked in documentary programs. Given the historical significance of the Ottoman Empire's demise in 1918, and the ongoing importance of Middle Eastern oil reserves to Western economies, a close study of this conflict provides two important lessons: 1. The Treaty of Versailles, agreed to by the Western Powers in 1919, paved the way for military and political chaos in the Middle East, which continues to this very day. 2. Oil reserves in the Middle East became an important strategic concern for Western Powers, helping to justify their economic, diplomatic and military interference in the region. After the end of World War I, most of the Ottoman Empire was carved up into "spheres of influence", controlled mostly by the British and French. The remaining territories became the modern state of Turkey in 1923 -- after a five-year struggle by Turkish nationalists against Western domination. With little regard for cultural, historical, religious and demographic considerations, the West sponsored the creation of several new nations: Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Thus, a "tinderbox" was built from Western greed, igniting a multitude of wars, revolts, coups and military occupations that truly have made the defeat of the Ottoman Empire little more than a hollow victory. Available on DVD.
