A equipe do Vasco chegava a final após vitória sobre o campeão da Oceania Adelaide 36ers (90 a 79) e após bater o campeão Europeu Zalgiris Kaunas na prorrogação por 92 a 86 (76 a 76 no tempo normal).
Apesar do cansaço começar a se fazer presente no time vascaíno, por ser o terceiro jogo decisivo em três dias, o 3° quarto foi de superação. O Vasco vence o Spurs por 30 a 23. Infelizmente no 4° quarto o time sucumbe...
"O Vasco fez três partidas em três dias e isso complica para qualquer equipe. Mesmo assim, jogaram bem enquanto tiveram forças" - elogiou o técnico Gregg Popovich dos Spurs.
O Vasco encerrava assim a mais brilhante campanha de um clube de basquete sulamericano em um torneio no exterior e frente à poderosa NBA.

Charles Edward Byrd led Vasco da Gama with 17 points. The Brazilian team reached the finals with a 92-86 overtime win over Zalgiris Kaunas of Lithuania, which represented the EuroLeague.
By winning the NBA Finals in June, the Spurs received a bye into the semifinals of this six-team tourney.
Histórico: O Vasco se credita a participar do McDonald´s Championship, o campeonato Mundial das cestas, após ter sido campeão da Liga Sulamericana de basquete, ao vencer o Boca Jrs. da Argentina em março de 1999.
