Massukos are considered national treasures in their native country, renowned both for their stunning music and the humanitarian work that they do. Originating from Niassa in northern Mozambique, one of the poorest parts of Africa, Massukos use their music to deliver simple life-saving messages about hygiene, sanitation and HIV/AIDS.
The leader of Massukos, Feliciano dos Santos, is also the director and founder of the NGO Estamos - in April 2008 he was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize - the world's largest environmental prize for grassroots activites. Massukos are making their mark internationally with their new album Bumping is attracting rave reviews for it's "infectious" "ebullient" and "uplifting" sounds.
Shot in the beautiful rural areas of Niassa and the ABC Cinema in Lichinga, the capital of Niassa Province, this video and song capture the spirit, enthusiasm and pride with which Massukos celebrate their home province. The gig at the ABC was part of their national 'wash your hands for good health campaign' -- a life-saving message given through the power of music.

Originating from Niassa in northern Mozambique, one of the poorest parts of Africa, Massukos speak out against the hardships that have affected their lives. Passionate about what they do, the band travels for miles to remote villages to deliver simple life-saving messages such as "more condoms less partners".
Feliciano dos Santos - the leader of Massukos - is also the director of Estamos, who are involved with the installation of latrines and clean water points, as well as hygiene and HIV/AIDS education.

It's July 2005 and Mozambiquan music stars Massukos land in the UK to take part in the Make Poverty History campaign. Water, sanitation and hygiene practice are some of the gravest challenges facing the developing world and the film explores how Massukos use their music to draw attention to these issues. Along the way they encounter Gordon Brown MP, Sir Bob Geldof, Rolf Harris, DJ Charlie Gillett and many others. Feliciano dos Santos -- the band's leader and the director of the NGO Estamos -- also delivers a petition to Tony Blair at Number 10 on behalf of WaterAid.
Resounding with phenomenally beautiful music, this powerful, emotive and thought-provoking documentary carries many pertinent messages. Full film 25 minutes.

environmentalists. Awarded annually since 1990, the Prize is given to environmental heroes from the six continental regions of Africa, Asia, Islands & Island Nations, Europe,
North America and South & Central America.
The Prize is announced in April every year, to coincide with the international
celebration of Earth Day. It includes a trip to San Francisco to accept the cash award of $150,000 per winner. Recipients receive a bronze sculpture that interprets the crosscultural motif of a snake with its tail in its mouth. Known as the ouroboros, this symbol is associated with nature's powers of renewal.
The purpose of the Prize is to recognize sustained and significant efforts to preserve the natural environment, including, but not limited to, protecting endangered ecosystems and species combating destructive development projects; promoting sustainability; influencing environmental policies;and striving for environmental justice.
