The Sri Lankan Naval patrol units foiled an LTTE terrorist attempt to smuggle a cache of arms and explosives in the seas 185 Nm, off 'Dondra Point'-Matara, on Feb 28 2007, morning. SL Navy fired warnings shots in the air to halt the terrorist gun ship however the ltte retaliated by firing motars at the SL Navy. The Navy forces of the Socialist Democratic Rebublic of Sri Lanka had no choice but to fight back and destroy the terrorist ship completely. SL Navy recovered lethal weapons, 122 mm shells, T56 Magazines, motars, gernandes, suicide jackets, AK 47s, T56s, land mines and much more on the ltte terrorist gun ship
Fishermen in the area said that they heard two large explosions from the above mentioned area, as they were making towards the land.
The vessel sailing in deep seas around 185 nautical miles off 'Dondra Point' without a flag was detected by the Navy around 04.30 a.m. Feb/28/2007. The ship had completely ignored the warning shots fired by the Navy patrol craft to stop. Instead the vessel had opened motar fire towards the Naval units. Subsequently the Navy retaliated with gun fire at the suspected vessel at about 08.30 a.m.
It is now confirmed that the vessel had illegally carried weapons and ammunition for the LTTE terrorist. The LTTE's continuous attempts to acquire weapons and ammunition during the past failed due to measures taken by foreign countries. This incident is a clear indication that the LTTE has not stopped their attempts in procuring arms and ammunition to continue their terrorist activities to kill innocent Tamil, Sinhala, Muslim civilians of Sri Lanka.
The sinking of this vessel comes at a time when the LTTE has suffered humiliating defeats against the Security Forces and also been condemed for assasination attempt on foreign diplomats.

Who is LTTE ?
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is the armed rebellion organisation fighting for the independence of Tamil Eelam. It is a unique organisation in the world in the following aspects.
1. Every cadre wear a cyanide capsule around the neck and commit suicide to avoid divulging vital information.
2. LTTE is the only rebel organisation which has naval and air wings known as Sea Tigers and Air Tigers respectively.
3. All the cadre wear uniform.
Why did Tamils in Sri Lanka want Tamil Eelam ?
Sri Lanka, which was renamed in Sinhala in 1972, had been called as Ceylon by British during colonial times. Before 1833, the Tamil people were under different administration. They had their own kingdoms, culture and language which are very different from those of Sinhalese until 1505. The first colonial invasion took place in 1505. British brought Tamils and Sinhalese under one administration in 1833 and called this new colony as Ceylon.
When the British left in 1948, the 20% Tamils were left with 80% Sinhalese within a unitary country where the decisions were taken by democratic parliament system. Under this system, racially polarised Sinhalese and Tamils were ruled by the constant majority of Sinhalese against the democratic wishes of Tamils as Tamils were the constant minority.

Ambassadors of USA, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and number of several other top level foreign and local delegates came under LTTE mortar attack damaging the helicopters and injuring several others of the team including Disaster Management and Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe.
Large number of civilians were hurt due to continuous 122mm motor shelling by the terrorists from uncleared areas without any regard for innocent human lives. This was a clear assassination attempt by LTTE terrorists due to the ban carried out by the respective states of the Foreign Diplomats. Ltte was well aware of the arrival and had exact coordinates of the civilian landing site.
Ltte shelled the area exactly at the time of the VIP's arrival. This civilian area has not been subjected to war recently and been free of terrorists. Ltte's main idea is not to allow these diplomats to carry out humanitarian efforts for the Tamil population in the East of Sri Lanka by holding Tamil/Muslim civilians hostage.
This Terrorist act was condemned by U.N and the rest of the world and should not go un-punished.
The Tamil Tigers have started trying to absolve themselves and allay the fallout. The terrorist group went so far as to blame the Sri Lankan government, through some highly contorted logic, for not warning the rebels that the diplomats were traveling in the area.
Even if this dubious claim were true, it certainly isn't exculpatory because the Tigers have a history of targeting both high-ranking Sri Lankan officials and foreign diplomats. Sri Lankan President Ranasinghe Premadasa was assassinated in a 1993 bombing, the foreign minister (himself a Tamil) in 2005 and the deputy general of the peace secretariat in August 2006.
Also in August 2006, Tiger guerrillas tried to kill a Pakistani official in a suicide bombing as his convoy drove through Colombo, Sri Lanka. The Pakistani envoy escaped; seven other persons died. Most prominent was the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Ghandi in 1991, which precipitated India's crackdown on Tamil Tiger fund raising and operations (Location: Democratic Socialist repbublic of Sri Lanka is located below the southern tip of India)

Sources emanating from un-cleared areas say that the sea tigers are engaged in an uphill task to transfer LTTE leader Prabhakaran, injured by air attacks to Tamil-Nadu by sea.
It is reported that the tiger outfit is unable to provide the required treatment to him at the Thirippan Hospital, sited in a secret location in Kilinochchi. As such, the tiger outfit is planning to transport him to Tamil Nadu on the sly. The sources said they had made inquiries from a Tamil Nadu Hospital on the provision of necessary treatment to their leader. Prabhakaran was wounded in an air raid on the 28th of last month. The raid was carried out at an identified target based on intelligence information. The intelligence was able to recently confirm the report about the LTTE leader's injury.

Aug 01, Colombo: Sri Lankan troops yesterday (July 31) crossed the Mannar-Kilinochchi boundary and entered LTTE's final stronghold in the Wanni, the district of Kilinochchi, the military said.
Defence Ministry said troops had crossed into the Kilinochchi district at an undisclosed point on the Mannar-Vavuniya frontline and the fall of next Tiger town, Vellankulam on the Mannar-Pooneryn (A-32) road along the northwestern coast is imminent.
Yesterday's operations in the Wanni killed 20 Tigers and injured more than thirty others, defense reports claimed.
Three fronts are advancing north ahead of combined Mannar-Vavuniya frontline into the Tiger stronghold of Kilinochchi.
Troops of Task Force 1 (TF-1) continue marching along the northwestern coast on the western edge of the frontline towards Vellankulam establishing control over a 5 Square kilometers area at Mundampiddi, town before Vellankulam last evening.
Troops of 57 Division are moving ahead in the middle towards the strategically important Tunukkai, a town that lies halfway on the Mankulam - Vellenkulam road which functions as a main supply route of Tigers between Wanni and the northwestern coast .
Meanwhile troops of Task Force 2 (TF-2) are moving along the eastern edge of the Mannar- Vavuniya combined front towards A-9 road.
Defense analysts however are concerned as to why the LTTE is silent about the latest military onslaught into Tiger territory. They sound caution that LTTE may be tactically withdrawing as done in the past in preparation for a major surprise attack on the troops entering into the unfamiliar territory.

Former Eastern leader of the LTTE terrorists and now leader of the political party TMVP , Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman yesterday told media that LTTE would definitely lose the war being fought at present. Speaking at a media briefing held on the sideline of a series of political meetings in Welikanda , he said that LTTE lost 60% of its military might when his faction broke away from the terrorists outfit. Due to this reason he said, that it would be impossible for the LTTE to defend against the advancing troops in the North.
Speaking further, he revealed that terror chief Prabhakaran had never attended for any of the military operations carried out during his time in the terror outfit. "It was I who commanded all those military operations against the security force", he said.
He also went on to say that, the present government had showed him the correct political path and would move forward joining hands with the government. He appreciated the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the role played by Defence Secretary, Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the process of bringing peace to the country and expressed his intention to enter in to the parliament in future for the benefit of the Eastern people.
During the briefing the TMVP leader also highlighted that LTTE leader might use chemical weapons against security forces to save his life. He said Prabhakaran would never be able to come before the public but would use them as a human shield for his own protection

"Tiger Leaders are using thousands of child soldiers for war. They recruit children directly from schools. Wanni people are now fully disgusted with the LTTE and they do not trust them any longer," so says a 21 year old Tiger surrendee to the Army troops in Jaffna.
The surrendered Tiger cadre, identified as "Thileepan" in the organization was nineteen years of age when he was forcibly taken away by Tigers during a pilgrimage he has made to Madhu in the company of his mother and sisters in the year 2006. The surrendee who claimed that he was for peace and does not want to resort to violence, further told the Army in his confessions, the following;
"Senior LTTE men, operative from the rear of their defences are used to send new recruits to the front as canon fodder. Tigers are not capable of resisting attacks of the troops. LTTE members are now tired of fighting against well-trained government troops. They are now withdrawing. Their "Eelam Dream" is confined only to a dream. They will never achieve it."
"I was living with my parents, brother and three sisters. I was abducted by the LTTE in 2006 at the age of 19 years when I was going to Madhu Shrine for worship with my family. They gave me LTTE training for two months and then sent to the Welioya front. A large number of females are deployed in the LTTE defence lines. They have been forced to cut their hair short to avoid being identified. Those LTTE girls are desperately longing to go to Security Forces-held areas with their parents and lead a peaceful life under the troops."
"The best thing the LTTE can do for Tamil population now is to deliver their arms and select the peace path. I finally state that the Army looks after me well. LTTE will never succeed in this war. I request all our misguided members to surrender to any Security Forces camp, leaving the LTTE," he has told the troops.

Sri Lanka's Tamil ethnic Minister of Highways & Road Development, Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, was killed in a suicide bomb blast by a LTTE terrorist at the public playground in Weliweraya, located in the Gampaha district of Western Province, around 8:00 a.m. Sunday(06). 12 persons were killed and more than 50 wounded in the attack that took place while the minister was waving a flag to start off a marathon race in connection with the Tamil and Sinhala New Year celebrations.
An athletic coach attached to the sports ministry, Luxman de Alvis, former Sri Lankan cyclist champion Karunaratne, and a police officer were also killed in the blast, according to initial reports.
The 55-year-old minister, who is also the chief government whip of the Sri Lankan parliament, has been elected to Sri Lankan parliament for five consecutive terms.
3 days ago, Mr. Fernandopulle led the ruling UPFA delegation in Trincomalee to field candidates for the upcoming Eastern Provincial Elections in which he had curtailed the number of nominees of paramilitary-cum-political party TMVP, from five to two, for the Trincomalee district.
He was a close associate of the Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa and played a key role in strengthening Sri Lanka's relationship with Iran since 2006, when he was the the minister of trade, commerce, consumer affairs and marketing development.
He was affluent in Sinhala, English and Tamil languages and functioned as a propaganda spokesman for the UPFA government.
Police claimed that the blast was caused by a suicide attacker, charging that the LTTE was behind the attack.

Seven air crafts were damaged by LTTE air and ground attack on the Anuradhapura Air Base today (22) early morning, unconfirmed reports say.
The loss is around US $ 25 million, source says. That was the highest loss in the Sri Lanka Air Force history.
A beach craft worth Rs. 2.5 billion which can be airborne for a long time was also damaged, reports say.
LTTE Claims that they destroyed eight aircrafts. Helicopters including two MI-24 gunships, one MI-17, one PT6, one Bell 212, a CTH 748, and a reconnaissance aircraft were destroyed in the attack, pro-LTTE Tamilnet claims.
Crashing of Bell 212 helicopter was called in for assistance from Vavuniya, air force sources said. The reason for the crash is suspected to be a technical failure. However, air force sources added that further investigations would be necessary to make more accurate conclusion.
Defense Ministry says Bell 212 helicopters crashed due to technical failure adding further investigations would be necessary to confirm it. But pro-LTTE Tamilnet claims helicopter was shot down by Sri Lankan anti-aircraft fire.
Acceding to Media Center fro National Security (MCNS), 18 airmen were wounded, but Defense Ministry says number of injured airmen is 20, while five airmen were killed.
But pro-LTTE Tamilnet claims 13 SLAF airmen were killed, nine inside the base and four in the helicopter crash.
20 bodies of LTTE cadres found in clearing operations, Defense Ministry says.
Meanwhile LTTE released photos of the 21-member Black Tiger attack team via Tamilnet, that included three female Black Tigers and the Air Tiger personnel who took part in the attack.

Military Sppokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara has said that the Sri Lanka security forces have overrun the Southern Division of the Adampan Tank which contorlled by the terrorist LTTE. (08/02/2008)
He said LTTE cadres who came in boats fitted with machine guns at around 6.45 p.m. yesterday attacked security forces personnel in the Thanakiluppu Forward Defence Line in Jaffna. The troops retaliated with automatic weapons, artillery and battle tanks. One boat was shattered. Four LTTE cadres were killed. They had fled in their boats but engaged in attacks from 6.45 to 10 p.m.. 30 LTTE terrorists were killed and 29 injured in several encounters that took place in Jaffna, Vavuniya, Mannar and Welioya. One soldier was killed and another injured. The Navy monitored a group of tiger terrorists in Trincomalee at around 8 p.m. yesterday. Three were killed when the navy attacked them. Two T-56 assault rifles, two micro pistols, magazines, ammunition, two claymore mines, two anti personnel mines and other military equipment were recovered.

What is Tamil Eelam?
Tamil Eelam is a de facto state in Indian Ocean. It is located below the Tamil Nadu state of India and in the North East of Sri Lanka. Why did Tamils in Sri Lanka want Tamil Eelam?
Sri Lanka, which was renamed in Sinhala in 1972, had been called as Ceylon by British during colonial times. Before 1833, the Tamil people were under different administration. They had their own kingdoms, culture and language which are very different from those of Sinhalese until 1505. The first colonial invasion took place in 1505. British brought Tamils and Sinhalese under one administration in 1833 and called this new colony as Ceylon.
When the British left in 1948, the 20% Tamils were left with 80% Sinhalese within a unitary country where the decisions were taken by democratic parliament system. Under this system, racially polarised Sinhalese and Tamils were ruled by the constant majority of Sinhalese against the democratic wishes of Tamils as Tamils were the constant minority.

What are some of the natural resources in Tamil Eelam?
Ilmenite, Rutile, and Zircon
Sri Lanka's north-east Pulmoddai coastline consists of mineral-rich sand. The 60 to 70 percent heavy minerals concentration of ilmenite, rutile and zircon are considered on of the best in the world. The main deposit consists of around 60 percent ilmenite, eight percent rutile and 8-10 percent zircon.
Ilmenite, a black, heavy, metallic oxide mineral, is the major source of titanium, a metal valued for its high strength and light weight. Titanium's strength is such that it can withstand very high temperatures and is non-corrosive. Titanium is used in the construction high-performance military aircraft and rockets, space capsule skins, armour plate, aircraft firewalls, jet engine components, landing gears, submarines, and engine parts (as an alloy).
Rutile, on the other hand, is mainly used in the titanium metal industry and in welding rods. Zircon is in demand in the ceramic industry for high quality glazing, foundries, and electrical items.
Since September 1997, there has been little attempt to mine this mineral wealth. Production stopped after the Tiger attack sank a Lanka Mineral Sands cargo ship loaded with ilmenite anchored one kilometre off the beach.
Pulmoddai is considered one of the best mineral sites in the world, with a heavy mineral content of 60 to 70 percent compared to beach deposits in Australia, a big producer, where the concentration is only five percent.
Surveys commissioned by Lanka Mineral Sands indicate that the heavy minerals actually come from the island's interior, after being washed down by rivers such as the Mahaweli, Sri Lanka's longest river.
New surveys, both onshore and offshore, estimate there are more than 12 million tonnes of heavy minerals in Pulmoddai and other nearby untapped areas, all on the east coast. They estimate that the reserves could last 25 to 30 years at the rate it was mined in the past.
The state-run company's earning capacity reflects the wealth of this area: it was earning around 300 million rupees (about 3.3 million U.S. dollars) annually during its peak.
So much so that until the Tigers struck in 1997, Lanka Mineral Sands, which pays royalty to the government for the mining rights, was the most profitable venture among state companies.
Salt
Prior to 1990 Elephant Pass and Kurunchativu located 10km apart had the largest salterns in the northeast with a combined area of 100 acres, and produced more than 85,000 metric tons of salt a year. The salt production in this area was sufficient in 1990 to meet all of Sri Lanka's needs and for export to other countries such as Singapore from Kurikattuvan harbor.
The British monopolized all salt production in Sri Lanka under their control in 1938 with the establishment of the Salt Department in the wake of the 'Salt Satyagraha' by Mahatma Gandhi in India. The Salt Department was made the National Salt Corporation in 1966. All salterns in Sri Lanka were under the corporation before 1990.
The salt production stopped in 1990 to 2000 when the Sri Lankan Army Elephant Pass garrison removed timber lining the edges of salt pans were removed by the SLA for military purposes.
