In this experiment a mobile robot builds a 3D map from stereo images (SLAM with Rao-Blackwellized Particle Filter), and then it uses that map to localize itself within the same room starting at an unknown position. | Video-rate recognition and localization for wearable cameras - 160 sec
Using simultaneous localization and mapping to determine the 3D surroundings and pose of a wearable or hand-held camera provides the geometrical foundation for several capabilities of value to an autonomous wearable vision system. The one explored here is the ability to incorporate recognized objects into the map of the surroundings and refer to them. Established methods for feature cluster recognition are used to identify and localize known planar objects, and their geometry is incorporated into the map of the surrounds using a minimalist representation. Continued measurement of these mapped objects improves both the accuracy of estimated maps and the robustness of the tracking system. In the context of wearable (or hand-held) vision, the system's ability to enhance generated maps with known objects increases the map's value to human operators, and also enables meaningful automatic annotation of the user's surroundings.

This was part of our Robotics course at university. Each group was given a LEGO Mindstorms kit with the standard motors and sensors, and also a HiTechnic compass sensor.
Our objective would be to build a robot that could navigate its way around the given map and follow a series of waypoints, correcting itself when needed.
We built a standard tribot and mounted a sonar on the front to measure the distance to the wall in front. We did not use the compass.
We programmed the NXT using RobotC interface which is much the same as C. The technique used is called Monte Carlo Localization which probalistically determines where the robot it based on odometry and the sonar readings.
The map data was given at the start, and the waypoint data was given just before the challenge.
Our robot was the fastest, but not quite the most accurate. Our robot was, however, the only robot to manage Global Localization (not featured here).

The Acoustic Event Detection Support Vector Machine-based system (Temko et al., CLEAR 2007), written in C++ programming language, is part of the smartAudio++ software package developed at TALP Research Center, Speech Processing Group, Universitat Politèctnica de Catalunya (UPC, Barcelona, Spain) which includes other audio technology components such as speech activity detection and speaker identification for the purpose of real-time online activity detection and observation in the smart-room environment. That AED system implemented in the smart-room has been used in the demos about technology services developed in CHIL project (Computer in the human interaction loop). Also, a specific GUI-based demo has been built which shows the detected isolated events and the positions of their sources in the room. The positions are obtained from the acoustic source localization (ASL) system developed also in our lab (Segura et al., CLEAR 2007). A video recording has been captured from the GUI and is publicly available. It contains the output of the GUI during a session lasting about 2 minutes, where four people in the room speak, are silent, or make one of the 12 meeting-room sounds defined in CHIL and a few others.
