The number of motorcycle licenses has increased this summer, and there seems to be more inexperienced riders on the road.
High gas prices have boosted sales of motorcycles and mopeds. But the appeal of the open road and more miles per gallon is carrying a sobering statistic, KMBC's Bev Chapman reported.
Ten percent of the people who died on Missouri highways last year were riding a motorcycle, state records show.
On Tuesday, two men on motorcycles were injured in a collision at Highways 291 and 58 in Cass County. The highway patrol said they were passing a line of cars and failed to see a truck making a left turn in front of them.
"Statistically, the highest accident rate is someone who learns from a relative, learns from a friend, or just tries to figure it out for themselves," said Claudia Mekins, who teaches motorcycle safety at Maple Woods Community College.
According to the Missouri Division of Motor Vehicles, there are about 9,000 more licensed motorcycle drivers in the state this year.
"I've had people say they never thought of riding a motorcycle before. They're just doing it because of the gas," Mekins said.
But saving money means little if you are injured. Mekins said many of the people turning the keys on two-wheelers haven't ridden since they were kids.
"When you're 12, you bounce. When you're 40, you don't bounce. When you're 12, you ride on dirt roads or in the back yard. When you're 40, you're on I-435. It's serious," Mekins said.
There are several schools in the Kansas City area that offer motorcycle training classes.

What is the license transfer tool?
The license transfer tool on Xbox.com lets you consolidate all of your downloaded content licenses to one console. For example, if you downloaded items from Xbox LIVE® Marketplace on one console, then purchased another console later on and downloaded more content to the new one, your content would be licensed to two consoles. This tool lets you download your older content licenses to your new console.
Why did Xbox create this tool?
We are always looking at ways to improve the Xbox 360® and Xbox LIVE experience. With the success of Xbox LIVE Marketplace, the need for a tool to consolidate content licenses became apparent.
My console was recently repaired; do I need to use the tool?
No, you do not need to use the tool. Licenses are transferred automatically during the repair process but you may need to download them again. Follow the instructions at the Console After Repair page.
How often can I use the tool?
The tool can only be used once every twelve months.
Why can I use the tool only once per twelve months?
The tool is intended to allow consumers to consolidate their licenses they purchased on multiple consoles to a primary console. It is not intended to continually move content between multiple consoles.
Why can't I move licenses to multiple consoles?
Most customers have a single console. However, they may have downloaded items to multiple consoles over time. We want to provide a way for these customers to consolidate their licenses on their current console. You can still use your content on other consoles while signed in to Xbox LIVE.
What licenses are NOT transferred by the tool?
Due to licensing restrictions, movie rental licenses are not transferred. Make sure you watch your movies before using this tool.
I've finished the process on xbox.com, now what do I need to do?
You need to download the licenses to your new console.
* Attach a hard drive or memory unit.
* Turn on the console.
* Sign in to Xbox LIVE with the gamer profile that originally downloaded the content.
* Go to Xbox LIVE Marketplace and select Account Management, Download History.
* Select an item and then select Download Again.
* Repeat step 5 for each item in your download history.
What happens to my content on the original console?
The content is no longer licensed to the old console. You can delete it, or you can use it while signed in to Xbox LIVE.
What happens if I have a problem?

About the North Carolina Driver License Hologram
The hologram is a security feature which is planned to be included eventually on licenses throughout the United States. It was added to the North Carolina driver license in December 2006 as a common security element which enhances security, protects against document fraud and aids law enforcement.
Because of differences in licenses among states, motor vehicle officials worked in unison through the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) to establish a common element that identifies licenses as legally issued by an official motor vehicle agency. This common element will assist those who depend on driver licenses to identify people throughout the country at a glance, including those driving on the interstates, checking into airports and for other security efforts.
The security element is a foil-based holographic patch on the back of the license which carries multiple layers of design features both visible and invisible to the human eye, including a variety of 3-D flourescent images, codes, numbers and other items.
The many images on the patch include a globe with longitude and latitude lines showing North and Central America, as well as parts of South America, Australia, Africa and Europe. Other images include an automobile with headlights. "NC" is printed in each of the four corners of the patch, denoting the patch represents North Carolina and no other state, country or continent. The patch does not contain personal information, radio chips or fingerprint information.
The multiple images were added to make the patch difficult to copy or counterfeit, while also making it more recognizable to law enforcement and security officers.
