| end of the world?, the Large Hadron Collider ( LHC ) - 376 sec
The Large Hadron Collider is the largest and most complex scientific instrument ever built and the highest energy particle accelerator in the world.
The accelerator is located 100 m underground and runs through both French and Swiss territory. ( 27km circumference)
Year 2008 September 10th, marks the culmination of 20 years of work by over 8000 scientists thousands of engineers, technicians and support staff from over 80 different countries.
some critics say that this could create a black hole and suck up the entire world..but many say that even if a black hole is created it will wannish within a millionth of a second..
Latest : they have successfully done the 1st testing on the 10th September 2008, sending 2 beams separately clockwise and anticlockwise, which had successfully gone all the way around the ring. but there had been some minor errors, which we dont have to worry about.
***due to a helium leak, the LHC wont be re-started till 2009.

The detector they refer to at the beginning of the clip is more than likely the ATLAS experiment (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) as this is the largest and most well known detector proposed.

El CERN se encuentra en Suiza, cerca de Ginebra, y próximo a la frontera con Francia. Cuenta con una serie de aceleradores de partículas entre los que destaca el, ya desmantelado, LEP (Large Electron-Positron Collider, Gran Colisionador Electrón-Positrón) de 27 km de circunferencia y que constituye la máquina más grande jamás construida. Actualmente en su lugar se está construyendo el LHC (Large Hadron Collider, Gran Colisionador de Hadrones), un acelerador protón-protón que operará a mayor energía y luminosidad (se producirán más colisiones por segundo). Se espera que este incremento en energía y luminosidad permita descubrir el esquivo bosón de Higgs, así como confirmar o desestimar teorías de partículas como las teorías supersimétricas o las teorías de tecnicolor.
El éxito del CERN no es sólo su capacidad para producir resultados científicos de gran interés, sino también el desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías tanto informáticas como industriales. Entre los primeros destaca en 1990 la invención del WWW, pero no hay que olvidar el desarrollo y mantenimiento de importantes bibliotecas matemáticas (CERNLIB) usadas durante muchos años en la mayoría de centros científicos, o también sistemas de almacenamiento masivo (el LHC almacenará un volumen de datos del orden de varios Pb cada año). Entre los segundos podemos citar imanes de 9 T en varios metros, detectores de gran precisión, imanes superconductores de gran uniformidad a lo largo de varios kilómetros, etc...
