Synopsis
"Lexicon Devil: The Germs Documentary" tells the story of one of Los Angeles' seminal punk bands: The Germs, and their iconic singer Darby Crash.
The Germs single-handedly created a West Coast Punk sound that never progressed past smeared peanut butter and noisy sets, but they surely claimed their stake in the punk rock history. "Lexicon Devil" is an oral history of a time just past glitter and right before hardcore, of a place where for the first time, a generation of kids stood up to take what they believed they were owed -- a stage and an audience.
By varying accounts Darby Crash was a tortured poet, a mindless junkie, a prophetic seer and an evil brat. Tortured by the need to hide his homosexuality, Darby Crash kept his edgy persona and at the same time retreated into the world of drugs and alcohol. Lexicon Devil takes a look at his story and the story of the band he shared with Pat Smear, Don Bolles and Lorna Doom through the eyes of many of the people who were there. At the same time the movie takes a look at the flash of brilliance that was The Los Angeles punk of the late 1970's (which has long taken a historical back-seat to New York and London) and explores some of the other brilliant bands that emerged including X, The Screamers, The Weirdos and the next wave of hardcore bands that took the changing L.A. sound to the rest of the country
