Lew Six Pack 1 of 6 (The Discounter Blues) 1995 - 169 sec
a Lew Dite original song (1995) recorded in 1996 with Lei Qiang - Chinese erhu I have always had a low opinion of "lowest price" marketing strategies best exemplified by Wal-Mart but common throughout the market place. Lowest price is based on the idea that the individual somehow "out smarts" the market and pays little for something that is worth more. This philosophy promotes individualism and destroys local communities. Market pricing should be about fair distribution of wealth. That is to say... the purchaser gets a good product at a price that supports all the work that goes into producing that particular product. A pricing practice that squeezes producers for the sole benefit of the purchaser is a very narrow "one-sided" accounting practice that ignores the worth of production and is not sustainable because it hollows out the community. It then reinforces itself by offering "lowest prices" to the struggling community it has "hollowed out." Low prices also distort real costs which in turn encourages wasteful exploitation of natural resources. Given what is happening to the markets world wide these days I thought it was a good time to post this old song of mine. The Discounter Blues They call me a consumer I'm shopping all the time But I never lay my money down Until a bargain I do find It's in the local papers And I see it on TV The message seems so loud and clear Low prices guarantee So low it's almost free Jobs are disappearing And families cannot cope What we need are more reductions Low prices give us hope Low prices give us hope... With faces always smiling I am told to be so glad With all these falling prices I've no reason to be sad How come I feel so bad? They say we pay so little For something that's worth more So who's not getting their fair share? Could it be labor? They've over-fished our oceans And they're cutting down our trees Now they're cutting down our labor force We're down on our knees. Oh brothers and dear sisters Use your money well Spend it at your local shop Where fellow humans dwell Fellow humans dwell Fellow humans dwell.

Lew Six Pack 2 of 6 (The Mallness of It All) 1995 - 141 sec
In keeping with the "discounter blues" theme here is another song that I wrote (1995) and recorded in 1996 with Lei Qiang playing the Chinese erhu. I had read a book about the history of a town (Llyodminister) in Saskatchewan that really made an impression on me. When I went out west on a holiday I made a point of going to that town to experience the solidarity that I had felt when reading their story. I wanted to just hang around their local "center of town" and mingle with the spirit of the place... Alas, the center of town was virtually deserted. All the people were in the mall on the outskirts of town. I was left with an empty feeling... The Mallness of It All The people crossed this immense land Seeking a better way They built their homes of sod and mud Dug in, laid plans to stay. The winters were severe and long The food uncertain and thin Life relied on the common good And they found their strength from within. There was a town in Saskatchewan Way out there on that plain Where people lived and loved their land Together in joy and in pain. But now that's gone, the streets lay bare The town's an empty shell The highway mall has moved right in All life is at the big sell. Is this New York or Buffalo? Perhaps it's nowhere at all... I can't tell where I am supposed to be Must be the mallness of it all. So now this town on the western plain Is a town whose soul has been lost The shopping mall has savings to sell But the soul has been the true cost. Down on Main street I stand here alone Betrayed, bewildered, confused My heart reached out to touch this place But its spirit has simply refused.

Rob Crewe and Lew Skinner Sitting in with Mike Cadillac and - 529 sec
Wicked Band, Great People and new Friends Mike Bravner (aka Mike Cadillac) and his band, The Rockin 88's at Gordies Pub in Fredricton NB, during ECMA weekend... as I hear this on play back, its pretty obvious the piano was WAY too loud... but in my defense, there was no sound guy.. typically, as long as I can hear my self.. I let the sound tech take care of the rest... oh well.. Still lots of fun... Great tunes, great folks..and sure was a lot of fun! Over the course of the ECMA weekend, Lew and I got to know Mike Bravner, and his band and spent pretty much most of the weekend with them. They've got one helluva great band, and they were awesome hosts! Mike's got a Piano Player who's only 18, but they guy can play circles around me in his sleep... That said, I was very honored when they let me get up to play as well! Just all around great people, who enjoy music as much as we do.... the whole group was just fantastic, and treated us like family!... Between these guys, and they guys from Matchstick Mike and the Chain smoking Altar Boys, and the ECMA's themselves... (oh yeah, we had that award show to go to, lol) we had one great weekend.. anyway.. this is just one clip of a great weekend.. Hope you enjoy! We sure did
