Helen Levitt (born 31 August 1913) is an American documentary photographer.
Levitt grew up in Brooklyn, New York. Dropping out of school, she taught herself photography while working for a commercial photographer. While teaching some classes in art to children in 1937, Levitt became intrigued with the transitory chalk drawings that were part of the New York children's street culture of the time. She purchased a Leica camera and began to photograph these works as well as the children who made them. The resulting photographs appeared, to great acclaim, in 1987 as In The Street: chalk drawings and messages, New York City 1938--1948. Named as one of the "100 best photo-books", first-editions are now highly collectable.
She studied with Walker Evans 1938 and 1939. In 1943 Edward Steichen at the Museum of Modern Art curated her first solo exhibition, after which she began to find press work as a documentary photographer. In the late 1940s she made two documentary films with Janice Loeb and James Agee: In the Street (1948) and The Quiet One (1948). Levitt, along with Loeb and Sidney Meyers, received an Academy Award nomination for the screenplay of The Quiet One. Levitt was later credited as a cinematographer on The Savage Eye (1960), which was produced by Ben Maddow, Meyers, Joseph Strick; she was also credited as an assistant director for Strick and Maddow's film version of The Balcony (1963).
Levitt worked in film for about ten years. In 1959 and 1960, Levitt received two Guggenheim Foundation grants to take color photographs on the streets of New York, and she returned to still photography. Her first major book was A Way of Seeing (1965). Much of her work in color from the 1960s was stolen in a burglary. The remaining photos, and others taken in the following years, can be seen in the 2005 book Slide Show: The Color Photographs of Helen Levitt. In 1976 she was a Photography Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts.
She has remained active as a photographer for nearly 70 years and still lives in New York City. New York's "visual poet laureate" is notoriously private and publicity shy.

I noticed that people like to spread his records on youtube so I thought I'd show you this one.
Joe's Description:
*Since Scott Heim set his novel, Mysterious Skin, in Kansas, where he grew up, and I had never been there, I figured I should go, and he should show me around. I brought my video camera because Gregg wanted to see the real life places that inspired the book and thus the script, and because, even though Scott insisted there was no such thing as a Kansas accent, I wanted to record people talking in Kansas accents. And because I generally feel more comfortable when I know the video cameras in my bag.
On the last night of my trip, Scott and I decided to put the camera to another use—making a horror movie. We got his sister Tamyra and friend Christina to play the girls, and we played the boys. And the girls. Yes sir, shot entirely on location in Lawrence, Kansas on the Fourth of July. Back in LA, during a few days off I had, when they were shooting Bradys scenes, I recorded its sound on my trusty Roland 1680, and later still cut its video on my trustish Apple Powerbook. I dedicate this video to the memory of Tamyras late used clothing store, Sugartown Traders. Oh, and this is funny, not only did I buy a red dress and a blue I love my German Sheopard T-shirt there, I also bought a pair of brown Dexters which ended up being the now notorious shoes of one Brendan Frye. Here's a translation attempt (sorry for the mistakes, any correction is welcome):
00.13: "What I become for the others doesn't really matters to me" (literal translation because I'm not sure of what he means here)
0.33: "When I was young I was more selfish, I was mostly concerned with my own pleasure. Since I've moved to NYC I went to college, I studied french, I visited France and Paris. I discovered that there's a world that I'm concerned with and that I love. I want to be a part of this world. And I think that the movies I made in the last 3 years... I hope they reflect that."
01.18: "I look at pictures of May 68 in Paris and it seems to me that it's exactly what should happen in NY now. It probably won't but if we can inspire with a movie, that is the goal for me."
01.41: "Mister Godard if you're watching this: Hello, call me please ! "
And then the host adds that he adores "Pierrot le fou" and "Le Mépris" (Godard) and also Brigitte Bardot and Anna Karina. That's part of the reasons why he learnt french in college. The Dead Sea scrolls consist of roughly 1000 documents, including texts from the Hebrew Bible, discovered between 1947 and 1979 in eleven caves in and around the Wadi Qumran (near the ruins of the ancient settlement of Khirbet Qumran, on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea) in Israel. The texts are of great religious and historical significance, as they include practically the only known surviving copies of Biblical documents made before 100 AD, and preserve evidence of considerable diversity of belief and practice within late Second Temple Judaism.
