Drinking Rainwater - 115 sec
Gord Harms explains how we will be turning rainwater into safe drinking water at the Demo Garden. Reverse osmosis and ultra violet light are two of processes used in our system. In a future videoblog, we will show you "On Tap - City Farmer Rainwater". City Farmer.

Developer Creates Community Garden - 224 sec
Mike Clark of Onni called me a couple of weeks ago looking for a group to manage a new community garden his company had built on their property in downtown Vancouver. Now, this is a one of a kind story -- a developer makes available gardens on vacant land until such time as that land is ready for building construction to begin. How often have we seen empty lots sit vacant for years while nothing happens. City Farmer.

Wilbur, Templeton, Mr. Kite, Iah (Eee-uh) and Dean (short for Geraldine) live secret, productive lives in a Vancouver back yard on the other side of the law. Not that they are on any wanted posters, but they don't have the same rights as dogs and cats. These egg laying chickens are Rhode Island Reds, one is a mix of Rhode Island and Araucana, and the cutest is a small Bantam. City Farmer.

Woodchips and Excess Worms - 121 sec
Today someone brought in two worm bins as a donation because they are moving out of the country and can no longer take care of them. We harvest the red worms and use them in our school program. Also today, the Vancouver Park Board delivered wood-chips to us. We use these chips on our paths which are very muddy after the winter rains. City Farmer.

Irene has been using an electric composter from Japan on her back deck to dispose of kitchen scraps for the past 6 months. The stainless steel unit comes with a bag of activator powder. Irene simply scrapes in all her cooked meat, fish, rice, pasta etc. The finished material comes out as dried pellets which Irene puts into her garden as a fertilizer. Mason Bees Coming to Life - 118 sec
Terry Slack, our Mason Bee box builder says: It's time to watch out for the greatest native pollinating bee in the world, working hard in our fruit trees and gardens setting the fruit. With the Honey Bee now in serious decline in the world, our food crops still need to be pollinated and the Mason Bee needs to be encouraged to visit our yards and pollinate to his tiny heart's content.

Saskatoon Berry Harvest - 124 sec
Ilsa kindly agreed to harvest our Saskatoon berry shrub. Delicious, dark purple berries thickly cover the branches. Of all the berries we taste around the garden, it is my favourite, perhaps because it is rare and never seen as fresh fruit in our stores. Why don't we grow it commercially in Vancouver; or at least in our backyards?

Cherry Tomatoes - 93 sec
So much sweeter than the larger varieties, our small, cherry tomatoes burst with flavor when you bite into them. We haven't had much sun this summer and yet the small tomatoes turn a perfect shade of red telling us "they're done". The secret fertilizer for these plants is compost tea from an adjacent worm bin.
