vegetativo definiti 'sacco di patate', 'quasi morti',
'malati terminali' o peggio. "Si tratta di persone
con una gravissima disabilità, che hanno bisogno
di rispetto. Non certo di definizioni offensive, che
pure sono state usate e hanno ferito parenti e familiari
dei malati, come quelle che si sono lette o ascoltate
di recente", sottolinea Eugenia Roccella, sottosegretario
al Welfare, presentando il 'Glossario' messo a punto
dal Gruppo di lavoro del ministero sullo stato vegetativo
e stato di minima coscienza. "Non si tratta di malati
terminali di cui si possa prevedere il decorso. Ma
di persone gravemente disabili - dice il sottosegretario
per le quali servono più cure, attenzione e delicatezza".
Termini offensivi, invece, "possono ingenerare
nel pubblico convinzioni errate su stato vegetativo,
coma e stato di minima coscienza", prosegue la Roccella.
"Negli ultimi giorni su questi argomenti sono state fatte
insalate di parole - le fa eco Gianluigi Gigli, docente
straordinario di Neurologia dell'Università di Udine,
commentando gli articoli e i servizi dedicati al caso
di Eluana Englaro - colpisce il rilievo di espressioni
tecnicamente improprie. E' stato detto che la donna
è 'in coma da 16 anni', mentre si tratta di qualcosa
di molto diverso, lo stato vegetativo appunto.
O che si potrà 'staccare la spina', quando questi
pazienti non sono tenuti in vita dalle macchine.
Insomma, non ci sono spine da staccare. Si è parlato
poi di morte corticale, ma le indagini mostrano che
le condizioni variano caso per caso. E ancora,
si è detto che questi pazienti non soffrono,
ma la realtà è che non lo sappiamo. Nessuno
può dire come sia la loro percezione del dolore".
Tanto che, prosegue il neurologo, è prevista la
sedazione quando vengono interrotte idratazione
e alimentazione forzata. Il gruppo di specialisti
del ministero si scaglia poi contro le definizioni
'permanente' e 'irreversibile' per lo stato vegetativo,
ricordando che "si può parlare solo in termini
probabilistici ma non assoluti, come fa la sentenza
del tribunale di Milano".
