This video includes excerpts from my 3rd autobiographical work - Like Colour To The Blind (note UK spelling of Colour) which is published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers as well as explaining their benefits in my case.
Among other topics covered in 'Like Colour To The Blind', such as sense of self, reading emotions and augmented communication, 'Like Colour To The Blind' was the first written account of a person with autism using tinted lenses for the management of visual perceptual disorders as part of their autism. As the sequel to two earlier bestsellers, it popularised the now global use of tinted lenses among the ASD population.
Whilst I initially wore Irlen lenses, I switched to BPI tinted lenses which I found more effective, more affordable, and which I could self select in my own leisure time. Whilst diagnosed by Irlen with Scotopic Sensitivity, I had a psychiatrist in my 20s proclaim I had (visual) agnosia when observing my object blindness, and I know I'm largely face blind. It appears the tints have helped with the light sensitivity and reduced some aspects of visual agnosia issues for me as part of a wider holistic approach to the management of many parts of my autism 'fruit salad'. Of course every person with autism is different so what has worked for me may or may not work for others.
