COLBERT...EASTERN LAUDERDALE...AND EXTREME NORTHWEST LAWRENCE
COUNTIES /ALABAMA/ HAS BEEN COMPLETED BY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE
AND COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PERSONNEL. THE EVENT OCCURRED
THURSDAY...MAY 8 2008. INITIAL FINDINGS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
* EVENT: TORNADO
* LOCATION: LEIGHTON TO ROGERSVILLE, ALABAMA
* ESTIMATED PEAK WIND: 125.0 MPH
* PRELIMINARY RATING: EF-2
* PATH LENGTH: 9.6 MILES
* MAXIMUM PATH WIDTH: 250 YARDS
* SUMMARY: SURVEILLANCE CAMERA FROM AN EQUIPMENT COMPANY NORTHEAST
OF LEIGHTON CAPTURED A TORNADO PICKING UP AT LEAST 2 CARS AND
THROWING THEM NEARLY 40 FEET. LARGE TREES WERE SNAPPED AND
UPROOTED NEAR FOSTERS MILL...ALONG COUNTY ROAD 40. JUST TO THE
NORTHEAST OF FOSTERS MILL...SIGNIFICANT STRUCTURAL DAMAGE
OCCURRED AT THE DOUBLEHEAD RESORT AND LODGE. A 2-STORY HOUSE WAS
COMPLETELY LIFTED OFF ITS FOUNDATION AND MOVED NEARLY 20 FEET.
THE ENTIRE WEST-FACING SIDE OF THIS HOUSE WAS RIPPED OFF ALONG
WITH SIGNIFICANT ROOF DAMAGE. ADDITIONAL SPORADIC DAMAGE
OCCURRED TO A GARAGE AND OTHER LARGE TREES FROM JOE WHEELER
STATE PARK TO ROGERSVILLE.
THESE FINDINGS ARE PRELIMINARY AND ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

Chester Leighton & His Sophomores was a pseudonym used for several bands, including those of Fred Rich (like on this record), Harry Reser, Ben Selvin and possibly several more. The conductor featured here - Frederic Efrem "Fred" Rich - was a Polish-born American bandleader and composer who was active from the 20's to the 50's. Among the famous musicians in his band included the Dorsey Brothers, Joe Venuti, Bunny Berigan and Benny Goodman. In the early 30's, Elmer Feldkamp was one of his vocalists. Rich was a pianist and he formed his own band in the 20's. His theme songs were "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" and "So Beats My Heart For You." Between 1925-1928, he toured Europe. Rich enjoyed a long stay at the famous Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. After this, he began leading studio band that featured many famous musicians. He recorded for Okeh, Columbia, Paramount, Camden and Vocalion and several others, often recording under the names Fred Richards, the Astorites, the Hotel Astor Band (considering that Rich and his band played at the Astor Hotel for a time in the 1920s) and many others. In the late 30's, he would become a musical director for various radio stations and in 1942, he moved onto a staff position with United Artists Studios in Hollywood, where he was to remain for most of his career. In 1945, Rich was badly injured when he suffered a fall. As a result, he contracted partial paralysis. But despite this, Rich continued to lead studio bands into the 1950s. Fred Rich died on September 8, 1956 in California aged 58 after a long illness. As a pianist, Fred Rich has a number of song credits to his name, including "Blue Tahitian Moonlight," "Time Will Tell" and "On The Riviera." He also wrote scores for many movies. On this particular recording Tommy Dorsey and Joe Venuti have really nice jazzy solos. Possibly Tommy's brother Jimmy does some nice filling in on clarinet, altnough it could actually be Tony Parenti who is playing. We hear a strong rhythm section with Eddie Lang, Joe Tarto (?) and Stan King. The vocal is by the great Smith Ballew. He was an excellent singer who worked with the most diverse jazz and dance bands (Ben Pollack, the Dorsey Brothers...); when the Depression struck very harshly, he could no longer perform as a member of other bands, and founded several bands under his own name, before returning to the Dorsey Orchestra and a little later joning the Glenn Miller Orchestra. The present record was made for Harmony on Oct. 29th 1930. It should be noted that the same performance was issued on Clarion as Frank Auburn and his Orchestra, another of those frequently used pseudonyms.
