A somewhat ethereal slow shot of a long leafcutter trail at La Selva biological station in Costa Rica.If you look up at the top of the clip when it pans out, you can see the trail disappear off into the distance. These trails are amazing, they stretch for hundreds of yards and are packed full of ants 24 hours a day. If you look very closely, you can see a few leaves that have the tiny "hitchhiker" ants on them. These are a special small caste of leafcutter ants that helps protect the workers from being parasitized by phorid flies. The flies will lay an egg inside the worker - when the egg hatches the larve of the fly crawls up into the ant's brain, eats its brain and then the ant's head pops off and a new phorid fly flies out. Pretty amazing stuff. It is a lot like the Aliens movies.

shot a few days ago in the Peruvian rainforest on my little digital camera with a pitifully small memory card.
This was an area roughly 100 feet in diameter with no vegetation, completely decimated by the leafcutters. The mounds were each about six feet wide. The ants had to walk outside of the colony's perimeter and 50 feet up a tree to the canopy to get more leaves.
The ants don't actually eat the leaves; they use them as mulch to cultivate a fungus, with naturally occurring microbes on their bodies as starters.
The large ant, clearly seen in the beginning of the video, is categorized as a "major", one of the four types of ants found in a leafcutter colony (excepting the queen). He's one of the soldiers who defends the nest, and can grow up to 15 millimeters in length. The others are the "mediae", who do the cutting and carrying, the "minors", who provide additional defense, and the "minims", who stay underground and tend to the fungus gardens.

A colony of leafcutter ants, arguably some of the hardest working members of the Animal Kingdom, is now laboring away in a new habitat at the Children's Zoo. The insect house, Spineless Marvels, is home to the industrious ants. Native to Central and South America, they never seem to rest in their quest for more leaf material for their underground fungus gardens. Guests can watch the work both above ground, and, thanks to the cutaway design of the habitat, see the subterranean activity they would never be able to witness in the wild.

Leafcutter ants can be found throughout Central and South America from as far north as Texas down to Southern Argentina.
Leafcutter ants are an aggressively territorial species. Members of different colonies are not spared if they happen to wander into a colony that isn't their own.
The ants are fungus-eaters (mycophagic). Foragers find leaves by using chemical trails left by scouts to go to a particular tree, strip it of its leaves, and then follow the same trail back to the nest to deposit the leaves. The ants cut fresh leaves up into small pieces to use as a substrate for their fungus crop. Once the leaf fragments are inside the nest each is prepared with a drop of anal liquid which acts as a fertilizer. Once the leaf is placed into position a small amount of fungus is placed onto the anal drop.

De bladsnijdersmier leeft in een ingewikkelde gemeenschap van miljoenen individuen. Elk individu wordt geboren in één of meerdere klassen, of kasten, die zijn taak in de kolonie bepalen.
De soldaten staan dag en nacht op wacht bij de talrijke ingangen van het nest, alsof het een fort is. De werkers lopen onophoudelijk van en naar een nauwkeurig onderzochte plant. Ze bijten er stukjes blad af en dragen of slepen die terug naar het nest, waar ze verdwijnen in één van de talrijke ondergrondse kamers.
