In this episode we go to the legendary set of stairs at Wallenburg in San Francisco, a proving ground for professional skateboarders. In fact, I think you could almost count the tricks that have ever been done down them on one hand. I wanted to mess Andrew up by making little messes on the stairs between each try, like have a place setting and put the fork in the wrong spot or something, but I didn't. Knowing how Andrew keeps his house that would be one of the meanest things you could ever do to him.

Jason Dill is a pro skater who has contributed so much to the history of skateboarding during his career so far that he can pretty much spend the next ten years sitting on a barstool and he will never not be one of our favorite skaters. He can say/wear/skate whatever he wants because he's earned himself a place among the likes of Neil Blender, Gino Iannucci, Guy Mariano, and Mark Gonzales (though I don't want that statement going to his head).

I've known Jerry for, how long, ten years maybe? A long time. I remember going on tour with him and Tyrone Olson back in the day. We both found T-bone so intolerably annoying that Jerry and I became instant BFFs. We were also both into shooting photos--he was working on his book Demo Chix and I was really into shooting the elusive T-Bone tre-flip. In any case, we've been bros ever since (we have matching tattoos to prove it!). For this episode Jerry gave me a six-hour VHS tape of really incriminating material from when he first started skating. Stuff like self-cheering, self-filming, sketchy mongo-ish pushing, weird trick selection, weird outfits, chain wallets, etc.--all stuff that people on the Slap message boards will basically crucify you for. I thought "There is no way Jerry is going to let me put this out." So I sent him a quicktime of the show, just to see if it would even fly at all, and he was like, "Who cares, I don't care what anyone thinks, I was just a kid." I thought that was pretty zen of him. Anyway.... Not to get all momish, but look how much this bud has blossomed and grown.

Erik is all around the coolest person I have ever met. The way he looks, the way he skates, the way he pushes--he's just a straight-up cool man. I remember meeting him on the first Baker tour. Jay Strickland, Scotty Copalman, Trainwreck, Knox Godoy, as well as all the people that still skate for Baker were on that trip. It was a mess. It was like the heyday of the Pissdrunx. I couldn't sleep because we put 15 people in 3 hotel rooms and you never knew when Erik or Trainwreck were going to wake you up to fight you. It was really kind of scary. But anyway, as much of a pile that Erik seems like from a distance (or when he's drunk), he's actually a very smart and thoughtful person. Did you know he invented the Hand Board? It's like a giant finger board that Tech Deck makes and every time Toys R Us sells one of those stupid things dude gets a dollar. He's secretly pretty shrewd. Right now he's got a sunglasses company and owns part of Supra Shoes.... seriously, he's a darkman in disguise. In the end though, it all comes back to skateboarding, and Erik is first and foremost an incredible skateboarder, carving his own niche in a crowded world. Any time a video comes out with new Ellington footage, I'm glued to the screen.

The year was 1992. I was in high school, and I learned from another skater that shorts weren't cool anymore. I also started saying words like "fresh" "hella," and I spent most of my time doing noseslides to "K-grinds." It was like one year I had cargo shorts and rails on my H-Street board, the next I had a World board with a nose that was bigger than the tail, bleached hair, and Blind jeans. I also really liked Souls of Mischief for some reason... sorry, I'm not trying to make this all "Memory Corner." The thing is, looking back, it was as if the EMB crew was sitting on the C-block issuing directives that all skateboarders were compelled to follow or risk being endlessly heckled or ass-kicked. Every little aspect of skateboarding at the time--every clothing trend and trick--began at Embarco and rippled out through the skaterverse. In the course of a single year the whole world changed. Tons of 80s pros were suddenly out of work and left with no respect. For better or for worse, what it meant to be a skater had radically shifted. Henry Sanchez was a key figure in the EMB scene, he invented so many tricks and took switch stance to a whole new level. He pushed skating in technical new directions without compromising the gnarlatude. Looking back now, a lot of skaters from that time seem pretty dated, riding slow and doing crazy triple flips. But Henry's old parts still hold it down.

This is the John Cardiel episode of Epicly Later'd. It began like all the episodes of the show begin, just meeting up with a dude to talk about skateboarding. But John is such a legendary skater with such a long and amazing personal history that to try and crush everything into a normal 15-minute episode would have been a joke. Over the course of filming and editing, this thing just grew and grew until now I almost want to say it's a full-length documentary.
From his youth in the sticks of Grass Valley to becoming one of the most loved and respected skateboarders of all time to miraculously recovering from a horrific, paralyzing injury, we are proud to bring you John Cardiel's story as best as we can tell it.

The first pro board I ever had was Ray Barbee's Powell one with the ragdoll sitting on the fire hydrant, so getting this interview with him was a complete thrill. Ray is famously one of the nicest, happiest, and most positive skaters of all time. I feel like skaters today are way too negative and judgemental, myself included. Ray's skating is like music in motion (no seriously). He brought a whole new style to the sport, new tricks, and most importantly a new attitude. All you Snidely Whiplashes out there with your permasmirks could take a lesson.

I don't think any of my friends liked Dustin at first. Meryl hated him, Manute hated him, Tino too... But soon they were all attached at the hip. I think everyone loves/hates Dustin. That seemed to be the consensus among people I interviewed. Well, I hope you like/hate Dustin enough to sit through the very first episode of my show. I am very proud. I feel like I'm having a little baby... a virtual TV show baby about an Australian skater nicknamed Spawn.

Let's just say this episode could have been WAY worse than what you see here. Once the floodgates holding back Tim's animosity for virtually every other skater alive were opened, we realized we were probably going to have to censor it down a lot, which we did. Sorry. It's just there's so, so much you can't say about people without it constituting some form of slander. I guess that's what we get for letting money-grubbers and pussies rape our legal system for the past 20 years.

Damn, now i've arrived! An episode about Pat Duffy—that's a legend right there. This episode is kind of stepping on On Video's toes a little bit, who did a history profile on Pat back in the day. This one is hopefully a bit different and any holes we left can be filled over there.
There's not much else to say about Pat: He shredded hard, became a pile, then shredded again. We don't even talk about the party monster side of him—I guess we we were too busy going on weird Plan B political tangents. I don't think another guy will ever come out of nowhere to blow as many doors down as Pat did with his part in Questionable. Who else did that? I gotta think for a second about that.

Jake Phelps reminds me of the editor of the Daily Planet in Spiderman. He just sits there and yells at people all day: "O'Dell! I needed a cover! You call this a hammer!?" Sometimes he'd call me going, "You're sleeping at noon!? You better've been out all night with Jason Dill and the generators!" (Which would be great name for a band, btw.) I don't think I've once seen Phelps sitting at the computer answering e-mail or checking spelling--he doesn't mess with any of that shit. In fact he doesn't even have e-mail and his cell phone doesn't have voicemail. I told him I wasn't able to leave him a message once and he was like, "I don't play that shit"
People have all kinds of conspiracy theories about Thrasher. I can't count the number of times someone has told me that they're banned from the mag or been like, "I used to have a subscription to Thrasher, but Jake saw my name in the computer and deleted me." Trust me, Jake's not going through any computer lists right now. He's probably in Shanghai or Paraguay with the Hell Ride crew shralping concrete parks and passing out in snake runs.
