Le Languedoc (en occitan Lengadòc) est un territoire du sud de la France correspondant à l'ancienne province du Languedoc, ainsi nommée en raison de sa langue -- l'occitan languedocien -- par opposition avec le nord de la France, autrefois qualifié de « pays de langue d'oïl » -- òc et oïl étant la forme du oui respective à chaque partie.
Aujourd'hui, le territoire de l'ancienne province de Languedoc correspond principalement aux régions françaises de Midi-Pyrénées et de Languedoc-Roussillon, qui correspondent respectivement aux anciens Haut-Languedoc et Bas-Languedoc.

Caught between the Etang de Thau and the Mediterranean, Sète covers the Mount Saint-Clair which, from its 182 metre-high summit, has incomparable panoramic views. Town of water and canals, it is the Venice of Languedoc.
The Bassin (or Etang) de Thau in Southern France is a lagoon -- a 20 km-long expanse of brackish water separated from the Mediterranean by a narrow stretch of sand. The water, kept pure and clean by a sound environmental policy, offers ideal conditions for the culture of oysters and other shellfish, but also allows fishing and other water sports.
The Bassin de Thau stretches from Mont Saint Clair, near the town of Sète, to the Cap d'Agde (the hill visible at the horizon). Between these two extremities, a narrow sand bar offers 20 km of sparkling beaches. The rest of it is occupied by a road, a railroad track, vineyards, saltworks and several tourist facilities (campsites, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets
In the Thau Basin, oyster farming works with oyster "tables" rather than the traditional oyster "beds" found elsewhere. From these tables, cables are lowered into the seawater on which the oysters can fix themselves and develop, and from which they can be conveniently harvested
