Advanced Topics In Programming Languages: Closures For Java - 6905 sec
Google Tech Talks January 17, 2007 ABSTRACT We propose to add Closures to the Java Programming Language. Closures simplify the use of APIs that rely on anonymous class instances, such as the concurrency APIs and callbacks. More importantly, closures support control abstractions, which are APIs that act as programmer-defined control constructs. This talk describes the proposed language extension and its design rationale, and shows how it will affect existing and future APIs. Credits: Speaker:Neal Gafter

New Languages by Yes - 560 sec
From The Ladder CD. Lyrics: I speak from some sort of protection of learning Even tho' I make it up as I go on A special trait is that I've tried To reach all feelings So I speak a new language of love Some say that it is written in the circle Others that it is written in the sun But I protect myself by seeing this experience As a metaphor for moving on Sometimes I check myself To start to believe in The horoscopes you read everyday They're telling me somethings I really ought to know But then again I like to Then again I learn to Then again I'm running away Vision is coming so fast I can't stop myself Vision forgets who is real On the city streets, people get lost Just waiting for history Pushing the real world away Taking a chance only once in your life Only weakness can stop you from hearing New languages Translate each word As they bring you creation Your voice is the perfect key Is there something that I'm supposed to see Is there something that I'm Supposed to feel I'm with you And I can't help but want to know (Talk to me) Is there something that I'm supposed to teach (Speak to me) Is there something that I'm supposed to find As I reach to the healing in each spoken word For some strange reason time just cannot wait a minute I'm chasing every second before I let go Yesterday my history Dreams are still a mystery This living is a gift I should know Lay it down and let me live the new language Let me learn at every twist every turn Lay it down and let me love the further future Let me know I'm running Let me know I'm learning Let me know I'm moving on Vision is racing so fast I can't stop myself Chasing the reason For all kinds of wondering People embracing these feelings of limbo Just waiting for some kind of truth Taking a chance as it comes only once Only strength can do justice With words of new languages Translate creation To bring you salvation Your voice is the perfect key (Talk to me) Is there something that I'm supposed to see (Speak to me) Is there something that I'm Supposed to feel I'm with you And I can't help but want to know (New languages) (Talk to me) Is there something that I'm supposed to teach (Speak to me) Is there something that I'm supposed to find As I reach to the healing of each spoken word (new languages) Taking a chance as it comes only once Only strength can do justice With words of new languages Translate creation To bring you salvation Your voice is the perfect key (Talk to me) Is there something that I'm supposed to see (Speak to me) Is it something that I'm Supposed to feel I'm with you And I can't help but want to know (New languages) (Talk to me) Is there something that I'm supposed to teach (Speak to me) Is there something that I'm supposed to find As I reach to the healing of each spoken word (new languages) Is it something that I'm supposed to find As I reach to the healing of each spoken word (new languages)

"When Languages Die" author/linguist K. David Harrison - 1564 sec
Informative conversation with K. David Harrison, assistant professor of linguistics at Swarthmore College near Philadelphia and the author of the new book "When Languages Die: The Extinction of the World's Languages and the Erosion of Human Knowledge". He is the Director of Research at the Living Tongues Institute and was recently featured in the documentary called "The Linguists" which followed hands-on linguistic field work in countries around the world. In this fascinating interview, Harrison discusses the critical importance of the world's many threatened languages and the vital knowledge that each language uniquely packages and holds for all of us. Harrison also discusses the need for more trained linguistic personnel to go out into some of the remotest parts of the world to document these nearly extinct languages before they are lost to humanity forever.

Advanced Topics in Programming Languages: The Java Memory... - 3442 sec
Google Tech Talks March 21, 2007 ABSTRACT This talk describes the Java Memory Model and how it affects the ways concurrent software should be written. Recent changes to the memory model, which were incorporated into JDK 5, redefined the semantics of threads, synchronization, volatile variables, and final fields. The new memory model provides efficient and provably correct techniques for safely and correctly implementing concurrent operations. These techniques are compatible with existing good programming practice, although care needs to be taken in a couple of corner cases. Most programmers can avoid depending on low-level details and instead just use the high-level concurrency abstractions...

Leehom Speaking 5 Languages - 490 sec
In addition to music, Leehom has an interest in learning new languages because he likes to learn about new cultures. Although he isn't fluent in all of them, he takes great joy in the actual process of learning. That's what I admire about him, his willpower when it comes to learning. Even if he isn't perfect at something, he isn't afraid to try it. He currently speaks fluently or conversationally Mandarin (started learning at 18), Cantonese (started learning around 2000), English (His first language), French (high school), and Japanese (started learning in 2004). Leehom wants to visit France one day so he can further pursue the learning of the language. I think it would be cool to learn as many languages as Leehom, but I don't have the talent, determination, or patience to do so. lol.
