RIDING GIANTS -= Laird Hamilton - 124 sec
What can I say -- Laird Hamilton is the shite! And Stacy Peralta is almost as bad ass as him. First the Bones Bridgade, then DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS followed by the best surfing doc ever? I think BIG WEDNESDAY will always be my true love of surfing movies, but in the doc-shop, RIDING GIANTS rules. This is a just a clip of the man himself -- Laird Hamilton.

Cardiovascular Innovations John Laird - 1050 sec
John Laird, "What's New at the Center for Vascular Medicine" Leading vascular specialist named director of UC Davis Vascular Center John R. Laird, a leader in the field of peripheral vascular intervention, has been named as the medical director of the UC Davis Vascular Center, which is dedicated toward providing state-of-the-art vascular care and promoting collaboration among the different specialties involved in the treatment of patients with vascular disease. Laird is an internationally renowned interventional cardiologist who has lectured and performed endovascular procedures around the world. His practice focuses on interventions for carotid artery disease, abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysmal disease, renal artery disease, and peripheral artery disease. "Dr. Laird is highly regarded around the world for his work on the endovascular treatment of peripheral artery disease," said Claire Pomeroy, Vice Chancellor of Human Health Sciences and dean of the UC Davis School of Medicine. "With his expertise guiding the development of our Vascular Center, we will have an enormously valuable resource for patients in the Sacramento region. Dr. Laird also has an impressive track record in the areas of educating trainees as well as pursuing innovative, groundbreaking research." Laird's many areas of leadership and innovation include the investigation of new stents for carotid and peripheral vascular applications and the development of laser angioplasty. He uses the Excimer laser as a tool in complex peripheral interventions and in limb-salvage cases. UC Davis Health System will acquire a laser this summer, which will allow the Vascular Center to add laser angioplasty to its clinical services. In addition to his clinical activities, Laird is known for teaching vascular interventions to other physicians, and for organizing and conducting clinical trials of new therapies for vascular disease. Laird has published extensively on the subject of peripheral vascular intervention. His other research interests include the evaluation of covered stents for peripheral vascular applications, carotid artery intervention, and the use of embolic protection devices, stent-grafts for the treatment of abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms, and gene therapy/therapeutic angiogenesis. Laird most recently was the director of Peripheral Vascular Interventions at the Cardiovascular Research Institute and Co-director of the Center for Vascular Care at the Washington Hospital Center, both in Washington, D.C. He also was a clinical assistant professor of medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center. Laird completed his undergraduate education at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1980 and received his medical degree from Albany Medical College in 1984. He completed his internship and residency in 1987 at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, and then completed a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases and interventional cardiology in 1990 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He served as the director of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories and director of Interventional Cardiology at Walter Reed from 1991 to 1996. He also was an assistant professor of medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. The UC Davis Vascular Center is dedicated to providing comprehensive care to patients with atherosclerosis and other vascular problems, such as aneurysms, vein disorders and less common vascular conditions. The primary goal of the UC Davis Vascular Center is to promote a comprehensive, collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to treating vascular disorders. A key emphasis of the center is to enhance collaboration among different specialties, allowing both established and emerging diagnostic and therapeutic methods to be applied, thus increasing efficiency and reducing risks to patients. Among the specialties that will participate in the UC Davis Vascular Center are vascular and cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, interventional radiology, endocrinology and nephrology. Vascular disease management, as it is currently practiced, is often fragmented and inefficient. Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease manifested through a variety of symptoms, yet the treatment of this systemic disease has traditionally been provided by physicians who concentrate on isolated signs of the illness in discrete vascular territories. The UC Davis Vascular Center's team-based approach will address the many facets of a patient's vascular disease as the systemic disease that it is, instead of allowing it to be treated by multiple, competing vascular specialists without such a global perspective.

Laird Scranton at CPAK 2008 - 600 sec
The Dogon, an outwardly primitive African tribe from modern-day Mali, preserve a detailed cosmology in ancient form, cast in the themes, symbols and storylines of the classic world mythologies, and couched in the clearest of modern terms, yet expressed using ancient Egyptian words. The cosmology is founded on an aligned ritual shrine that takes the same form and evokes the same symbolism as a Buddhist stupa, and culminates in a religious tradition that expresses itself through many of the signature rituals of Judaism, such as the wearing of skull caps and prayer shawls, the practice of circumcision, and the celebration of a Jubilee year. This presentation is an introduction to a pivotal culture that appears to stand at the very crossroads of ancient knowledge.
