Complete silence didn't seem appropriate to acknowledge the passing of a man who can be heard on this very channel via his amazing voice-over work.
I chose a few brief snippets of Don's voice. At the beginning is a quick cut of his interview on Dateline in 2000 and at the very end... they way I'd like to think Don would have ended this video tribute.
On a personal note: Those of us who take our trailers and advertising seriously knew about Don and the other members of "The Big Five" years before the Geico car insurance ads put a face to the voice of Don Lafontaine. Don's voice helped solidify all the memories we had as kids, and into adulthood, of the movie trailers he worked on. He has literally inspired this YT channel into being with over 5,000 movie trailer voice-overs during his career. Even if your not familiar with the name..you have surely heard his work right here on Drive-In Of The Damned, or at your local movie theater, throughout his amazing career.
Our prayers and thoughts are with Don's family.

As a Voice Actor Don was a great inspiration and still is today. Making you see what can be if you believe in what you do. Don LaFontaine, the man who popularized the catch phrase "In a world where..." and lent his voice to thousands of movie trailers, has died. He was 68. LaFontaine died Monday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from complications in the treatment of an ongoing illness, said Vanessa Gilbert, his agent. LaFontaine made more than 5,000 trailers in his 33-year career while working for the top studios and television networks. In a rare on-screen appearance in 2006, he parodied himself on a series of national television commercials for a car insurance company where he played himself telling a customer, "In a world where both of our cars were totally under water..." In an interview last year, LaFontaine explained the strategy behind the phrase. "We have to very rapidly establish the world we are transporting them to," he said of his viewers. "That's very easily done by saying, `In a world where ... violence rules.' `In a world where ... men are slaves and women are the conquerors.' You very rapidly set the scene." LaFontaine insisted he never cared that no one knew his name or his face, though everyone knew his voice. LaFontaine went on to work in the promo industry in the early 1960s. As an audio engineer, he produced radio spots for movies with producer Floyd Peterson. When an announcer didn't show up for a recording session in 1965, LaFontaine voiced his first narration, a promo for the film, "Gunfighters of Casa Grande." The client, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, liked his performance. LaFontaine remained active until recently, averaging seven to 10 voiceover sessions a day. He worked from a home studio his wife nicknamed "The Hole," where his fax machine delivered scripts. LaFontaine is survived by his wife, the singer and actress Nita Whitaker, and three daughters. His funeral arrangements were pending.

Don LaFontaine was born in Duluth, Minnesota. After graduating from High School, he joined the army and eventually was stationed at Fort Meyer, Virginia, outside of Washington DC. He was assigned to the United States Army Band and Chorus as a recording engineer.
After his discharge from the service, he moved to New York City where he found work at National Recording Studios as a sound engineer/editor. Late in 1962, he was assigned to a young radio producer named Floyd L. Peterson, who was creating radio commercials for "Dr. Strangelove". They worked so well together that, in January of 1963, LaFontaine joined Floyd Peterson, making it a two man operation, working out of Floyd's apartment.
Over the next couple of years, the company rapidly grew to employ thirty people and expanded into its own building; a carriage house on west 57th street. Floyd L. Peterson, Inc. was one of the first companies to work exclusively in motion picture advertising. Prior to that time, most film promotion was done in-house by the studios. It was during this period that the format for the modern Trailer (Previews of coming attractions) was developed, and LaFontaine and Peterson were among the first to create the catch phrases that still dominate trailers; "In a world", "A one-man army", "No where to run, no where to hide and no way out" etc.
In 1965, a mix-up in scheduling prevented an announcer from making a session, and LaFontaine was forced to create a "scratch" narration for radio spots for the film "Gunfighters Of Casa Grande" in order to present something to the client, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. To his surprise, they bought his performance, and over the next 16 years he voiced thousands of spots and hundreds of trailers.
He spent a number of years as a head of production for Kaleidoscope Films, Ltd; one of the premiere trailer production houses. In 1976, he started his own production company, Don LaFontaine Associates. His first assignment as an independent was "The Godfather, Part II."
In 1978 he was asked to join Paramount Pictures, heading up the trailer department. Over the next three years, he became literally the "Voice" of Paramount. In 1980 he was named Vice President, but he missed being involved in active production.
He left Paramount in 1981 and moved from New York to Los Angeles, again as an independent producer. One of his first phone calls was from a young agent named Steve Tisherman, who urged LaFontaine to pursue voice-overs more aggressively. He signed with Steve Tisherman, and never looked back.
Over the past 25 years, LaFontaine cemented his position as the "King of Voice-overs." Aside from his continuing work in the trailer industry, he was also been the voice of NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox and UPN, in addition to TNT, TBS and the Cartoon Network. By conservative estimates, he voiced hundreds of thousands of television and radio spots, including commercials for Chevrolet, Pontiac, Ford, Budweiser, McDonalds, Coke, and many other corporate sponsors. He worked on nearly 5000 films, including appearances as the in-show announcer for the Screen Actors Guild and Academy Awards. Based on contracts signed, Don had the distinction of being perhaps the single busiest actor in the history of SAG.
LaFontaine is survived by Singer/Actress Nita Whitaker, and their two children, Lisi and Skye, who live in Los Angeles.

Konkret nannte der Vorsitzende der Linkspartei bei einer Diskussion auf dem "Capital-Autogipfel" in Berlin die Schaeffler-Gruppe und forderte die Enteignung der Eigentümer Maria-Elisabeth Schaeffler und ihres Sohnes Georg, wie capital.de heute berichtet. Der fränkische Automobilzulieferer hatte Ende August den Dax-Konzern Continental übernommen.
Lafontaine sagte weiter, "kein Mensch" könne "in seinem Leben zehn Milliarden Euro auf verfassungsgemäße Weise anhäufen". Auf diesen Betrag bezifferte der Chef der Linkspartei das Vermögen der Schaeffler-Eigentümer. Vielmehr sei deren Reichtum "das Ergebnis einer fortdauernden Enteignung der Belegschaft und deren großen Beitrag zur Produktivität und Wertschöpfung". Insofern fordere er bei Lichte betrachtet nur "die Rückübereignung an die rechtmäßigen Eigentümer, nämlich an die Belegschaft.
