Joy Sutton, the health reporter/anchor for WDBJ-TV, recently interviewed Van Lewis, MD and Dr. Ashok Amin, with Carilion Clinic's research dept. about the KAVIAR study - comparing the two most common procedures used to treat osteoporosis spinal fractures, Balloon Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty.
With Balloon Kyphoplasty, the physician, guided by X-ray, inserts two balloons into the collapsed vertebra, which are then inflated to create a cavity and elevate the vertebral body. The balloons are removed and the cavity is then filled with a special bone cement to support the bone. Vertebroplasty is a process in which the physician, guided by x-ray, inserts a needle into the damaged vertebrae and injects a special bone cement that hardens and stabilizes the broken bone.
The study, called KAVIAR (Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty in the Augmentation and Restoration of Vertebral Body Compression Fractures) will follow patients for two years and compare the effectiveness of the two procedures in reducing pain, restoring spinal function and improving the patient's quality of life. The study will also track the healthcare related costs associated with each procedure.
