Ensemble Kyai Fatahillah was founded in 1994, at IKIP (now UPI), the student of the music program informally formed a gamelan community involved in new music, although at the time IKIP did not have the proper gamelan instruments available. In the new beginning there were only ten member, where as most of the student at IKIP were not instersted in playing gamelan instrument. Finally IKIP/Bandung owned a complete set of the gamelan in 1998, wich was named "Kyai Fatahillah" by the rector. Then the group was formally called Ensemble Kyai Fatahillah also, Ensemble Kyai Fatahillah eversince is getting more active, specialized in playing both tradisional as well as new music for gamelan.
To name a few of their activities : "eksperimentasi musik perkusi" in Taman Budaya Jawa Barat (1994), where as they were supposed to create music for the final examination of the dance students in Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) ; "Pentas Jelajah" in Bandung (1994); Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival (1997 - 2006); Opening of west Java Music Award (2005) in Bandung; movie music "Garasi" (2005); Hasu der Kulturen der Welt (The house of world Culture/ Berlin - Germany) on "Space and Shadow" (2005).
Beside playing music by the members of Kyai Fatahillah, they also perform work by other composer as Mang Koko, Slamet Abdul Sjukur and Dody Satya Ekagustdiman.

UCSB's Central Javanese gamelan ensemble "Kyai Selamet" performs Gambyong Pangkur, a dance said to have origins in village-based fertility rites. Gambyong means 'together; more than one'; Pangkur refers to a meter of classical Javanese poetry. Danced in the exuberant, flirtatious style (kenes), this dance is performed at social occasions, rice harvests, birthdays, or any other events that celebrate long life. Ladrang Pangkur, pelog barang. Bandabaya 'brave in the face of danger' is a warrior drill-type dance that originates from the Pakualaman court of Yogyakarta, Central Java. It features one or more pairs of dancers enacting mock battles with various weapons, e.g. swords, shields, and so on. This dance, apparently choreographed by Prince Paku Alam II (r. 1830-1858), is largely based on a combat dance from East Java called "beksan gebug" and is performed whenever a new ruling prince is installed within the Pakualaman court.

This dance is taken from the Damarwulan cycle, a semi-historical story from East Java. It tells of Damarwulan, a palace gardener of humble origins who comes to the aid of the maiden queen of the Majapahit kingdom (which later becomes one of the most powerful kingdoms in Java) by killing the seemingly invincible Menak Jingga (The Red Knight), an unwanted suitor from the neighboring kingdom of Blambangan. Menak Koncar, a trusted warrior-advisor to the Majapahit queen, is sent out to fight Menak Jingga, a battle he knows will kill him. In this dance, he reminisces about his wife and family while physically and emotionally prepares himself for his final battle. His movements are punctuated by a characteristic "limp".
Performed by the UCSB Central Javanese gamelan ensemble "Kyai Selamet" (Mike Pievac, dir.).
