Il 12 agosto del 2000 il sottomarino nucleare russo Kursk, in seguito ad un'esplosione, si inabissa nel mare di Barents con a bordo 118 membri dell'equipaggio. Alcuni di loro sarebbero ancora vivi e avrebbero qualche riserva di ossigeno che potrebbe garantire loro la sopravvivenza per una decina di giorni. Vladimir Putin, allora al suo primo anno di elezione, si trova confrontato con la sua prima importante crisi politica. In effetti le condizioni dell'affondamento del Kursk appaiono subito misteriose, e il Cremlino farà di tutto per ostacolare i soccorsi, rifiutandoli dapprima e dando poi false informazioni ai soccorritori in un secondo tempo.
Nelle prime informazioni date il 14 agosto, si parla di una collisione avvenuta durante una manovra nel corso di un'esercitazione militare. Dall'interno del sottomarino, che giace a 107 metri di profondità, vengono percepiti i colpi che i marinai sopravvissuti danno contro le pareti per chiedere aiuto. Vari paesi, tra cui gli USA, si offrono per organizzare i soccorsi, ma Mosca rifiuta categoricamente. Le condizioni meteorologiche proibitive, secondo quanto afferma il portavoce della Flotta del Nord, fanno fallire due tentativi russi di calare una capsula dove giace il sottomarino nucleare.
Il 16 agosto, le autorità russe affermano di non percepire più alcun suono proveniente dal sottomarino, e solo a questo punto accettano l'aiuto di Norvegia e Gran Bretagna (che però inviano una squadra specializzata solo il 19). Intanto i media diffondono le prime immagini del sottomarino, dalle quali si può vedere la prua completamente sventrata e in Russia cominciano le polemiche, nei confronti di Vladimir Putin (che si trovava in vacanza sul Mar Nero), sulle modalità con cui viene gestita la crisi.
Intanto nei giorni successivi falliscono tutti i tentativi di salvataggio, e la squadra britannica denuncia la poca cooperazione ricevuta dai russi, affermando pure che le operazioni sono ostacolate dal comando russo. Solo dieci giorni dopo l'incidente, i soccorritori riescono infine a penetrare nel sottomarino, ma è solo per constatare che non rimane più nessun soppravvissuto fra i 118 membri dell'equipaggio. Le operazioni di recupero vengono rimandate al mese di ottobre.
Viene trovato un messaggio scritto da un marinaio che prova che i membri dell'equipaggio non morirono tutti assieme.
Sulle cause dell'affondamento rimane un fitto mistero, ma dai retroscena di questa tragedia sono affiorati particolari agghiaccianti..

"The Kursk was part of Russia's Northern Fleet, which had suffered funding cutbacks throughout the 1990s. Many of its submarines were tied and rusting in Andreyeva Bay, 100km from Murmansk.
"Little work to maintain all but the most essential front-line equipment, including search and rescue equipment, had occurred. Northern Fleet sailors had gone unpaid in the mid-1990s because the money went missing before reaching the arctic north.
"The end of the decade brought with it a sort of renaissance with regards to the Northern Fleet.
"On the morning of August 12, 2000, tragedy struck Russian submarine K-141 Kursk. As part of a naval exercise, the Kursk was to fire two dummy torpedoes at the Kirov-class battlecruiser 'Pyotr Velikiy' (Peter the Great), flagship of the Northern Fleet.
"At 11:28 local time (07:28 utc) the torpedoes were fired, but soon after, there was an explosion on the Kursk. The only credible report is that this was due to the failure and explosion of one of the Kursk's new torpedoes.
"All 118 of the Kursk's crew perished aboard her."
