Israel: Kurds Festivity During Sukkot Holiday - 145 sec
Chan: Sukkot refers to the Jewish holiday commemorating those forty years in which the Jewish people wandered in the desert. During this holiday the Kurd congregation in Israel holds a colorful out door festivity. Lets join our Israeli correspondent Isabella Xiong for more. STORY: Kurdistan is the geographical area that spreads out over parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Syria and Armenia. Most of the Jewish Kurds immigrated to Israel during 1950. Today the community consists more than 160,000 people that are scattered all over Israel with a majority that is located in Jerusalem. This community strives to preserve its tradition, culture and the Aramaic language. This Sarane festivity conveys the care for nature by celebrating it with folk songs and dances, yet a major part of the festivity is simply enjoying out doors with family members and friends. [Abraham Siman Tov, Community Leader]: This is a community with a lot of character and Im proud to be a part of it. A member of a diligent, and devoted community that its people don't need others apart from themselves people are doing for themselves, for the community and for the country. Mordechai Yona screened the movie From Exile to Salvation which presents the Jewish way of life in Kurdistan, as it was in the past. Mr. Yona, believes this movie can help the younger generation to preserve their heritage. This year the participants in the Sarane festival were mainly young people. We noticed one man in particular who stood apart from all the others. He danced the whole evening and encouraged others to join the people that were dancing in circles. [Yosef Rabin, Participant]: The responsibility of the leader is to guide and also to watch peoples steps within this circle that I lead without creating any gaps between them. Since everybody else in this circle but me are holding hands, Im the only one who can make more moves. The duration of the melody, though, surprised me. Each music piece lasted for about 15 minutes so...no wonder the leader was soaking wet. Isabella Xiong, NTD, Israel

Lors And Bakhtiyaris Are Pure Kurds (Medes) - 639 sec
Lors And Bakhtiyaris Are Pure Kurds (Medes) Kermanshah or Gorani Kurdish,Kermashan Kirmaşan, is the capital city of Kermanshah Province, located in Eastern Kurdistan. Kermanshah has a continental climate. The estimated population of the city is 822,921(year 2005) [1] and the majority of the inhabitants speak Kalhori dialects of Kurdish. The religion of the people is very diverse and there are many Muslims, Assyrians, Bahá'ís, Jews, and Armenians living in Kermanshah but Kurds have been leading the city in the number since history can remember. Given its antiquity, attractive landscapes and rich culture, Kermanshah is considered as one of the cradles of prehistoric cultures such as Neolithic villages. According to archaeological surveys and excavation, Kermanshah area has been occupied by prehistoric people since the Lower Paleolithic period, and continued to later Paleolithic periods till late Pleistocene period. The Lower Paleolithic evidence consists of some handaxes found in the Gakia area to the east of the city. The Middle Paleolithic remains have been found in the northern vicinity of the city in Tang-e Kenesht and near Taq-e Bostan. The known Paleolithic caves in this area are Warwasi, Kobeh, and Do-Eshkaft. The region was also one of the first places in which human settlements including Asiab, Qazanchi, Tappeh Sarab, Chia Jani, and Ganj-Darreh were established between 8000-10.000 years ago. This is about the same time that the first potteries pertaining were made in Ganj-Darreh, near present-day Harsin. Construction of the city is attributed to Tahmoures Divband, the fabulous king of Pishdadian dynasty. It was a glorious city in Kurds about the 4th century AD when it became a political city and a significant health center serving Kurdish kings. In A.D. 226, following a two-year war led by the Sassanid Emperor - Ardashir I - against Kurdish Kings in the region, the Empire reinstated a local Kurdish prince, Kayus of Medya, to rule Kermanshah. Within the dynasty known as the House of Kayus (also Kâvusakân) remained a semi-independent Kurdish kingdom lasting until A.D. 380 before Ardashir II removed the dynasty's last ruling member.Kermanshah was conquered by the Arabs in A.D. 640 and called the town Qirmasin (Qirmashin). Under Seljuk rule in the 11th century, it was, and still is, a major cultural and commercial centre in Western Iran and the southern Kurdish region as a whole. The Safavids fortified the town, and the Qajars repulsed an attack by the Turks during Fath Ali Shah's rule (1797--1834). She was occupied by Ottomans between 1723-1729 and 1731-1732.Occupied by the Turkish army in 1915 during World War I, it was evacuated in 1917. Kermanshah played an important role in the Mashrota Movement in Qajar period and the Republic Movement in Pahlavi period. The City was hit hard during the Iran-Iraq War, and although it was rebuilt, it has not fully recovered, yet.Behistun inscription is considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Behistun Inscription (also Bisitun or Bisutun, Bagastana, meaning "the god's place or land") is a multi-lingual inscription located on Mount Behistun The inscription includes three versions of the same text, written in three different cuneiform script languages: Old Median, Elamite, and Babylonian. A British army officer, Henry Rawlinson, had the inscription transcribed in two parts, in 1835 and 1843. Rawlinson was able to translate the Old Median cuneiform text in 1838, and the Elamite and Babylonian texts were translated by Rawlinson and others after 1843. Babylonian was a later form of Akkadian: both are Semitic languages. In effect, then, the inscription is to cuneiform what the Rosetta Stone is to Egyptian hieroglyphs: the document most crucial in the decipherment of a previously lost script. The inscription is approximately 15 metres high by 25 metres wide, and 100 metres up a limestone cliff from an ancient road connecting the capitals of Babylonia and Media (Babylon and Ecbatana). It is extremely inaccessible as the mountainside was removed to make the inscription more visible after its completion. The what is so called Old Medo-Persian text contains 414 lines in five columns; the Elamite text includes 593 lines in eight columns and the Babylonian text is in 112 lines.

The Kurdish Question - 1422 sec
April 2008 Kurdish ambitions for independence and their own oil revenue is raising alarm bells in Washington and Baghdad. Tensions are escalating, with both sides threatening violence. According to US official Jon Cebra, the Kurds welcomed the overthrow of Saddam Hussein as "an opportunity to reintegrate into the rest of Iraq." But on the streets of the Kurdish capital, Irbil, no-one's interested in reintegretion. "Independence is on its way because Iraq's future is to be divided". The Kurds now have their own government and army and collect their own taxes. But more significantly, they're signing their own oil deals, and it's a very sensitive issue. The Kurdish government is also going to extreme lengths to boost the Kurdish population of Kirkuk, which it hopes will become the new capital. "They gave ,000 to people to come back", states Azadeen. The Kurds were once said to be America's best friends in the Middle East. Now, they wonder whether their independence was ever part of America's plans. There was meant to be a referendum last December on the issue. That vote has now been postponed indefinitely but the issue is not going away. "If the referendum is not implemented, we are afraid that something will happen." states President Massoud Barzani. "What may happen, I can't tell you now. But for sure it will not remain like now".

Kirkuk: A Town Divided - Iraq - 1350 sec
May 2003 Kurds are now returning to claim back homes in Kirkuk they were forced to flee under Saddam. But the 'right of return' is inflaming ethnic divisions in the city. Mayouf Sayid is now an old man, he was forced to flee his life in Kiruk 15 years ago "We're happy to be going back to our homes. Until now, it was like night for us. Now the day is dawning." He finds his house abandoned but still full of the memories of his murdered son. Mayouf finally breaks down in tears when his neighbour's daughters come to meet him for the first time -- as he realises all he has missed... Over 100,000 Kurds were expelled from Kirkuk in a vicious campaign of ethnic cleansing. Now they are eagerly returning, trying to establish a new Kurdish led multi-ethnic administration in the city. However, Arabs claim Kurdish militia are terrorising their neighbourhood, looting homes and evicting people at will. The Turkmen population also claim they are being targeted by the new Kurdish led administration. "If the situation goes on, of course we'd like Turkey to enter Kirkuk," states Turkmen Community Leader Ali Jangezh. It's a situation Turkey is watching carefully. The Americans have brought in extra troops but they remain outmanned. As the Kurds deepen their control of the city, the Turkmens enlarge their own militia and the Arabs continue to hanker for Saddam's return. Will the oppressed now become the oppressor?

A sign of declining US strategic power - 575 sec
7th Century The Kurds are conquered by the Arabs, beginning centuries of living under the rule of others. Their land is later occupied by the Seljuk Turks, the Mongols, the Safavid dynasty, and, beginning in the late 13th century, the Ottoman Empire. 1920 At the conclusion of World War I, the Ottoman Empire collapses. The Treaty of Sèvres proposes a division of the Ottoman Empire and its territory that includes an autonomous homeland for the Kurds. The treaty, however, is ultimately rejected. 1923 Turkey is recognized as an independent nation, and the Treaty of Lausanne is signed, replacing the Treaty of Sèvres. Under its terms, Turkey is no longer obligated to grant Kurdish autonomy. The treaty divides the Kurdish region among Turkey, Iraq, and Syria. 1925 A Kurdish uprising against the new Turkish Republic is suppressed. 1946 Iranian Kurds set up the short-lived Mahabad Republic with Soviet backing. It is swiftly crushed by Iran. The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) is founded by Iraqi Kurd Mustafa Barzani, and is dedicated to the creation of an independent Kurdistan. 1961 The Kurds of northern Iraq, led by Mustafa Barzani, leader of the Kurdish Democratic Party, revolt against the government of Abdul Karim Kassem. Iraq puts down the Kurdish revolt, and fighting between the Iraqi government and the Kurds continues for decades. 1970 A peace agreement is signed between the Iraqi government and the Kurds of northern Iraq, granting them some self-rule. 1974 The KDP attacks Iraqi troops after the government refuses to give them control of the oil-rich province of Kirkuk, which was traditionally Kurdish territory. The government suppresses the crushes the revolt. 1975 Jalal Talabani, leader of the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP), leaves to found the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). The two groups begin decades of conflict. 1978 In Turkey, Abdullah Ocalan helps to create the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, to seek Kurdish independence. He assumes leadership of the leftist organization. 1979 Iran's Islamic revolution sparks a Kurdish revolt in Iran that is then quickly suppressed by Iran. 1984 On August 15, under Ocalan's direction, the PKK turns to armed struggle. Thousands of Kurds in southeast Turkey join the cause, fuelled by nationalism and dissatisfaction with living conditions. 1988 Iraq retaliates against the Kurds for supporting Iran during the Iran-Iraq war, and through the "al-Anfal" ("spoils of war") campaign, slaughters thousands of civilians and uproots 1.5 million from their homes. Thousands flee to Turkey. 1991 After the Persian Gulf War, Iraq's Kurds rise up against Saddam Hussein, encouraged by the United States. Iraq quashes the rebellions, killing thousands. The U.N. coalition forces do not come to the aid of the Kurds, but eventually establish a no-fly zone in the north for their protection. Iraqi Kurds now control a 15,000-square-mile autonomous region in Northern Iraq populated by 7 million Kurds.
