Born Diane Heidkrüger in Algermissen, near Hildesheim, Germany, she started her career as a dancer in London when she was still young, but after an injury she changed her mind and went to Paris to become a model. She won Elite's 1992 "Look of the Year" at the age of 15. Kruger soon became interested in acting and took lessons at the Cours Florent. She landed some small appearances in several French movies. She then changed her last name for use with English-speaking audiences, to ease her move to a Hollywood career.
Kruger made her onscreen debut in 2002 opposite Dennis Hopper and Christopher Lambert in The Piano Player, a TV-movie by Jean-Pierre Roux. She played Julie Wood in 2003's Michel Vaillant and Lisa in Wicker Park (2004), alongside Josh Hartnett and Rose Byrne. Her most notable role to date is her portrayal of Helen in Wolfgang Petersen's epic Troy. She was ranked #50 on the Maxim Hot 100 Women of 2005.[1] In 2004, she starred with Nicholas Cage and Sean Bean (who co-starred with her in Troy) in the popular film National Treasure, going on to appear in movies such as Joyeux Noël (2005) and Copying Beethoven (2006). She will reprise her role as Dr. Abigail Chase for National Treasure: The Book of Secrets, The movie will be released in December 2007. Kruger married French actor Guillaume Canet on September 1, 2001. They have since filed for divorce, but acted alongside one another in 2005 film Joyeux Noël. She subsequently dated Canadian actor Joshua Jackson. Their relationship is rumored to have ended in March 2007, yet, no official reports have confirmed this.
Kruger absolvierte eine Ausbildung beim Royal Ballet in London und träumte von einer Tanzlaufbahn. Nach einer Verletzung wechselte sie ins Modelfach und ging mit 16 Jahren nach Paris. Als Model arbeitete sie unter ihrem richtigen Namen. Nach einigen Jahren nahm sie dort Schauspielunterricht und bekam schließlich kleinere Filmrollen. Um sich besser vermarkten zu können, verkürzte sie ihren Nachnamen seit ihrer Rolle in dem Film "Mon idole" auf "Kruger" (statt "Heidkrüger"), da dieser Name zu lang war und einen Umlaut enthielt.
Im Film Troja von Hollywood-Regisseur Wolfgang Petersen spielte sie die Rolle der Helena.
Eine Besonderheit an ihr ist, dass sie ihre Rollen selbst synchronisiert. Da sie jedoch keine einschlägige Erfahrung hat, ist dies in den entsprechenden Filmen (Das Vermächtnis der Tempelritter, Troja, Sehnsüchtig) deutlich zu hören und wirkt auf viele Zuschauer sehr befremdend. Dies brachte ihr schon häufig Kritik ein, da ihre (deutsche) Stimme im Gegensatz zu denen der Kollegen, die von professionellen Synchronsprechern gesprochen werden, eher lustlos und monoton klingt.
Diane Kruger war seit 2001 mit dem französischen Schauspieler Guillaume Canet verheiratet. Die beiden leben seit Anfang 2006 getrennt und haben die Scheidung eingereicht. Ihr neuer Partner war danach der kanadische Schauspieler Joshua Jackson, von dem sie sich im Frühjahr 2007 wieder getrennt hat. Presseberichten zufolge ist der Schauspieler Jack Huston aus der Huston-Filmdynastie und Neffe der Film-Diva Angelica Huston ihr neuer Freund.
Im Mai 2007 wird Kruger als erste Deutsche überhaupt bei den 60. Filmfestspielen von Cannes als Gastgeberin („maîtresse de cérémonie") die Auftaktzeremonie am 16. Mai sowie die Preisgala am 27. Mai moderieren.

In time, Kruger emerged as a leader. He started as a field cornet in the commandos, eventually becoming Commandant-General of the South African Republic. He was appointed member of a commission of the Volksraad, the republican parliament that was to draw up a constitution. People began to take notice of the young man and he played a prominent part in ending the quarrel between the Transvaal leader, Stephanus Schoeman, and M.W. Pretorius.
In 1873, Kruger resigned as Commandant-General, and for a time he held no office and retired to his farm, Boekenhoutfontein. However, in 1874 he was elected to the Executive Council and shortly after that became Vice-President of the Transvaal.
Following the annexation of the Transvaal by Britain in 1877, Kruger became the leader of the resistance movement. During the same year, he visited Britain for the first time as leader of a deputation. In 1878, he was part of a second deputation. A highlight of his visit to Europe was when he ascended in a hot air balloon and saw Paris from the air.
The First Boer War, also known as the "First War of Independence", started in 1880, and the British forces were defeated in the decisive battle at Majuba in 1881. Once again, Kruger played an important role in the negotiations with the British, which led to the restoration of the Transvaal's independence under British suzerainty.
On 30 December 1880, at the age of 55, Kruger was elected President of the Transvaal. One of his first aims was the revision of the Pretoria Convention of 1881, the agreement between the Boers and the British that ended the First Boer War. Therefore, he again left for Britain in 1883, empowered to negotiate with Lord Derby. Kruger and his companions also visited the Continent and this visit became a triumph in countries such as Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Spain. In Germany, he attended an imperial banquet at which he was presented to the Emperor, Wilhelm I, and spoke at length with Bismarck.
In the Transvaal, things changed rapidly after the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand. This momentous discovery was to have far-reaching political repercussions and to give rise to the uitlander, or foreigner, problem, which was eventually to cause the fall of the Republic. Kruger acknowledged in his memiors that General Joubert predicted the events that were to follow afterwards, declaring that instead of rejoicing for the discovery of gold, they should be weeping because it will "cause our land to be soaked in blood."
At the end of 1895, the failed Jameson raid took place; Jameson was forced to surrender, taken to Pretoria and handed over to his British countrymen for punishment.
Kruger believed that the Earth is flat; in 1897 he said to a sailor sailing round the world "You don't mean round the world, it is impossible! You mean in the world. Impossible!"[1].
In 1898, Kruger was elected President for the fourth and last time.
On 11 October 1899, the Second Boer War broke out. On 7 May the following year, Kruger attended the last session of the Volksraad, and left Pretoria on 29 May as Lord Roberts was advancing on the town. For weeks he either stayed in a house at Waterval Onder or in his railway carriage at Machadodorp in the then Eastern Transvaal, now Mpumalanga. In October, he left South Africa on the Dutch warship De Gelderland, sent by the Queen of the Netherlands Wilhelmina, which had simply ignored the British naval blockade of South Africa. His wife was too ill to travel and remained in South Africa; she died on 20 July 1901.
Kruger went to Marseille and stayed for a while in The Netherlands, before moving to Clarens, Switzerland, where he died on 14 July 1904. He was buried on 16 December 1904 in the Church Street cemetery, Pretoria.

In 1898, a small area between Sabie and Crocodile River was designated as a National Wild Animal Reserve, thus making the Kruger National Park Africa's oldest animal sanctuary. It is 450 kilometres long and about 55 kilometres wide and is one of the largest animal parks in the world, with 147 animal species, over 500 bird varieties, and 114 different reptiles.
The Kruger Park is divided into three areas. Whilst bush land and mopane trees form the northern half, the wide grass plains of the central region are home to a large number of wild animals. In the lush vegetation of the southern half, that consists mainly of acacia trees and bush land, is the preferred habitat of rhinos, hippos and many other wild animals.
The elephant, rhino, African buffalo, lion and leopard make up the so-called 'Big Five' of the Kruger National Park and in spite of its dry climate there is an immense variety of plant life with a rich assortment of trees, bushes, grasses, ferns, climbers and herbaceous plants.
Located on the southern bank of the Sabie Rive, the Skukuza Camp is the park's organisational centre and can accommodate over 1000 visitors. In 1902, this location was the base camp for the co-founder of the Kruger National Park, Colonel Stevenson-Hamilton. The camp is situated on the 'Lion Safari Road', one of the five most favoured routes for observing animals in the entire park, and a well maintained road network connects the park's 24 camps with the most interesting sights.
On the edge of the park's winding sandy tracks there is often a chance encounter with a prowling hyena and the road itself is popular with rhinos and many other creatures that appear to be determined to be photographed by anxious tourists!
The Kruger National Park that was once the Mecca of the Big Game Hunter is now an idyllic paradise of Nature and a veritable Noah's Ark for much of Africa's wildlife.

An der Autobahnraststätte da hat' ich großen Durst
es gab nur Automaten doch das war mir ganz Wurst
Ich drückte auf zwei Knöpfe, da war ich auch schon nass:
