| Clean and Green in NY. Meet Battery Park City. - 367 sec Imagine yourself in a modern green riverside community with sleek, energy efficient buildings, lush, pesticide-free parks, excellent schools, clean streets, cooperative composting programs, and sustainable systems everywhere you turn. No, you're not in Norway. Look again. You're in Manhattan. Yes, overcrowded, cutthroat, dirty, impersonal New York City. Battery Park City, in fact, a landfill neighborhood that juts out into the Hudson on the southern- most tip of the island. Over the past decade, starting long before sustainable communities were being planned or even thought about, this plot of property has developed into a model of urban sustainability. It's all thanks to the Battery Park City Authority, a partnership between New York City and State, which has indeed put its authority to good use by forging relationships with commercial and residential developers under one condition: that every new structure implement the highest level of sustainable technology. Now, Battery Park City boasts the highest concentration of green buildings of any neighborhood in the country. In this video, we meet Battery Park City's activist leaders and learn about the neighborhood's famous buildings, including the Solaire, the nation's first sustainable high-rise residential structure, as well as its beautiful parks (maintained with neighborhood compost, chemical-free), green schools, and program that gives surplus revenue back to the city to fund affordable housing. We also learn how something called a heliostat can make it sunny even when you're in the shade. Next to a skyscraper. In New York City. To coin the Authority's catchphrase, Who Knew? | TrashIn' the Big Apple - 480 sec "TrashIn' the Big Apple" addresses the environmental impact of landfilling food waste using New York City as a case study. New Yorkers waste more than any city in America, but currently there is no major policy, movement or plan to remedy the damage to the earth and its citizens. This documentary spotlights sanitation authorities and city businesses, demonstrates steps for solutions at home, and even tours the Rikers Island Prison composting facilities, offering solutions for both large scale operations and individuals alike. Through interviews with key figures, animation, and featuring a dynamic narrator, the 8-minute film takes the viewer on a short but comprehensive ride through the mounting problem of food waste. With 'Garbageland' author Elizabeth Royte and former NYC Composting Director Tom Outerbridge. Auteur : alisonby Tags: compost trash garbage environment sustainability new york green city big apple |

| the Blood live at Coney Island High in NYC, NY June 1999 - 564 sec the Blood live at Coney Island High in NYC, NY June 1999...i'm still pissed we were promised $750 and left with significantly less. NY i'd hoped was going to finance one of the funnest & dumbest ventures of my life. This particular line up of the band featured not only mainstay Jamie Cantwell aka JJ Bedsore but his long term band mate Gaz deGrout who did a short stint in the Southern Death Cult (and is a solo artist as of 2008)...plus band fan Brad Sims (formerly with Deathwish) keeping the band in motion by handling the drums and yet another band mate from the Blind Beggar releases Gareth on additional vocals & guitar. After the band went back to England, they drafted in a singer Compost, only did a handful of gigs, and JJ passed away in 2004 mostly unaware of the fandom for his work. I encourage all Blood fans to purchase the live CD i've released "Toilet Tour" featuring a bunch of live cuts recorded in Maryland on the 1st date of said east coast tour. Also, if youre in London & have needle fever, hit up Brad at his tattoo shop. Finally, i'll mention The Cardinal aka Colin who co-wrote some of these songs has reheated the Blood name, and is gearing up to release "Punk at the Opera" on CD - find him on myspace to hear samples from this disk. This clip has been uploaded to pay tribute to a big fan of Frosty Jack as well as Ren & Stimpy (off a dub - we're aware of the drop outs, seeking out the master currently!) - R I P JJ Auteur : dsirecords Tags: Punk |
