Kirkuk: A Town Divided - Iraq - 1350 sec
May 2003 Kurds are now returning to claim back homes in Kirkuk they were forced to flee under Saddam. But the 'right of return' is inflaming ethnic divisions in the city. Mayouf Sayid is now an old man, he was forced to flee his life in Kiruk 15 years ago "We're happy to be going back to our homes. Until now, it was like night for us. Now the day is dawning." He finds his house abandoned but still full of the memories of his murdered son. Mayouf finally breaks down in tears when his neighbour's daughters come to meet him for the first time -- as he realises all he has missed... Over 100,000 Kurds were expelled from Kirkuk in a vicious campaign of ethnic cleansing. Now they are eagerly returning, trying to establish a new Kurdish led multi-ethnic administration in the city. However, Arabs claim Kurdish militia are terrorising their neighbourhood, looting homes and evicting people at will. The Turkmen population also claim they are being targeted by the new Kurdish led administration. "If the situation goes on, of course we'd like Turkey to enter Kirkuk," states Turkmen Community Leader Ali Jangezh. It's a situation Turkey is watching carefully. The Americans have brought in extra troops but they remain outmanned. As the Kurds deepen their control of the city, the Turkmens enlarge their own militia and the Arabs continue to hanker for Saddam's return. Will the oppressed now become the oppressor?

Scores dead and injured in Kirkuk bombings - 160 sec
July 16, 2007: Kirkuk, in oil-rich northern Iraq, is the home and political base of the country's Kurdish President, Jalal Talabani. Around mid-day, a truck bomb eluded security and exploded outside the headquarters of Talabani's party, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). Kurds consider Kirkuk part of their historic homeland and want a referendum to integrate the city into their autonomous region. But there are also tensions involving ethnic Turks, as well as Sunnis, who form the majority population, many of them relocated there by Saddam Hussein in the 1970s as part of a plan to "Arabize" the north and control oil production. Agence France Presse quotes U.S. soldiers as saying Kirkuk had reached "an acceptable level of violence." But that was not the case as more than 80 people died and almost 200 were injured. No one has claimed responsibility for the latest attacks. APTN cameras captured the carnage in the city. The pictures are graphic.

Return to Kirkuk - 47min. documentary - 608 sec
November 2006 For the first time in 25 years, Karzan Sherabayani is going home. As a 14 year old, he was arrested and tortured by Saddam Hussein's secret police; targeted because he was a Kurd. He has spent the last decades in exile, struggling with his own demons. Now Karzan returns to confront his country's violent past and come to terms with its uncertain future. How do other Kurds feel about the West's policies in their country? Will Kurdistan be dragged into Iraq's bloody civil war or should it become an independent nation?

Iraqi Arabs paid to leave Kirkuk - 06 Oct 07 - 136 sec
It's a volatile city that's vital to Iraq's future, but now Kirkuk is facing its toughest test yet. Just weeks before a scheduled referendum on the city's destiny, Arab residents are being paid to pack up and leave. It's a controversial scheme, tied up in the struggle over which community should have control of Kirkuk and its huge oilfields.
